Horizontal photographs win far more often
Horizontal or vertical?
than vertically composed ones.

You may not have noticed but you can check

for yourself on the winners pages for each
challenge, you'll notice that on almost all
occasions you have to scroll down quite far to
find a vertically framed shot.

I think this is probably due to the fact that on a

desktop computer (which is where most voting
happens) a horizontal photo takes up more
space. This may change in the future as more
people vote on their mobiles.
2
Selective black and white, fake blur, coloured
borders, wacky colours... you know the types of
Processing
photos I mean. While I encourage you to carefully
process your photographs just because you can
do something, doesn't mean you should.

The fact that myself, and every other

professional photographer I've ever met, despise
these techniques is perhaps irrelevant. However,
it also appears that most Gurushots players
share this feeling too.
3
Think about tactics You may think you're better off entering
challenges as early as possible. The thing with
Gurushots is that all photos entered receive the
same amount of voting views (give or take a few)
no matter when they are entered. With this in
mind, you can try entering your photos at
different times during the challenge to see if you
get better results by entering them later on.

Note that a voting view is different from a normal

view. A voting view is how many times a photo has
been viewed in one specific challenge. A normal
view (which is displayed for every photo) is simply
a count of how many times a photo has been
viewed on the platform. These views include all
challenges that that photo has entered, views on
the ranking pages, on the player's profile etc.
4
Having too many elements in the frame can be
confusing to the viewer. It’s often the case that
Keep it simple
clean simple photos do better in challenges
because of this fact.

Try positioning your subject (whether it be living

or not) in an area with a clear background and
few distractions. This way the viewer’s eye is
drawn directly to the main point of interest in the
photo

Simple photos stand out more on the voting

screen than photos with complex elements.
5
Be present When photographing people, we usually want
to show their best qualities to do this you need
to be human, be real. Show them respect.

That includes making eye contact, listening to

your subject and interacting with them while
you are shooting.Don’t be shy and try and
sneak a long distance portrait when your
subject isn’t expecting the results will not be
the same.
