Introduction

Application
Ideally suited for medium to large construction projects with low to mod-
erate grades, typical applications for the CS-533E and CP-533E include
but are not limited to; highway or street construction, rental operations,
and both residential and industrial site development.

The CS-533E and CP-533E Vibratory Soil Compactors are the most pro-
ductive, reliable and versatile in their class and will consistently yield
high quality compaction results.

The CS-533E and CP-533E provide high compaction performance in typ-

ical applications where common fill lift thickness is less than 30 cm (12").
The CS-533E and CP-533E provide a lower price alternative with lower
owning and operating costs to customers who do not value or require the
enhanced features and productivity of the CS-563E and
CP-563E.

A broad application range is achieved due to the dual amplitude vibrato-

ry system. A dual amplitude vibratory system enables the operator to tai-
lor the machine operation to the specifications of the job. High amplitude
is used on thick lifts of material which require more force to achieve the
specified density. Low amplitude is used when compacting thin lifts; to
avoid fracturing aggregates; to prevent drum de-coupling when reaching
final density or when working around buildings.

Drum configuration selection depends on the soil type and the density
requirements of the job. Smooth drums are most effective on granular
materials such as sand, gravel and crushed rock. They are also used on
semi-cohesive soils with up to 50 percent cohesive soil content. Padfoot
drums produce the best results in cohesive soils such as gumbo or clay.

Introduction

Customer Profile
The primary customers for the CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors
are medium to large earthmoving contractors with private contractors
making up the majority of users.

Any contractor who is involved in site preparation or base work will own
one or more soil compactors. Machine productivity and reliability are of
high concern whoever the end customer may be because the soil com-
pactor can often dictate the pace of the job. If soil density is not correct
at each stage of the job, the whole job can shutdown.

The CS-533E and CP-533E are versatile machines for numerous com-
paction projects ranging in size from medium to large. Due to the many
different soil types and applications that soil compactors operate on, it’s
important to have the productivity, reliability and versatility that the
CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors offer.

The CS-533E and CP-533E compete in the 8.0 - 11.9 metric ton
(8.8 - 13.1 U.S. ton) size class and make-up the largest volume of all
Caterpillar vibratory soil compactors that are sold, leased or rented com-
bined. Customers of the CS-533E and CP-533E will be primarily rented
CS-533E by contractors who value productivity, reliability, price and availability as
• Smooth drum their most important buying criteria.
• Granular to semi-cohesive soils
• Sand, gravel, crushed rock Dedicated dealer rental fleets continue to grow rapidly and consist of
• Clayey or silty sand
rent-to-rent units and Cat® Rental Stores. With the release of the CS-533E
CP-533E and CP-533E, it’s estimated that the rent-to-rent units will make-up about
• Padfoot drum 50 percent of the units in the dealer rental fleet for those customers who
• Cohesive soils want to rent for longer time periods. The Cat Rental Stores would then
• Clay, sandy or silty clay consist of the remaining 50 percent dealer fleet rental units.
• Silt, clayey silt or sand

Dynamics of Vibratory Soil Compactors

Understanding the dynamics of vibratory compaction and how a vibrato-
ry soil compactor works to get density is key to helping a customer select
the right machine for the application. Too often customers are confused
by thinking that a compactor’s centrifugal force rating is the best way to
evaluate productive capability. In reality, the most important elements for
analyzing productive capability are static linear load (PLI for smooth
drum machines/PSI for padfoot drum machines) and amplitude. Drum
weight is also important. Centrifugal force is part of the evaluation
process, but its place must be understood.

Centrifugal force -- Centrifugal force is the force generated by the rota-

tion of an unbalanced shaft, called the eccentric weight, inside the drum.
The rotating eccentric weight causes an “eccentric moment”. (To visual-
ize the effect of the eccentric moment, think of a washing machine with
an unbalanced load during the spin cycle.) The more that the weight shaft
is unbalanced, the greater is the eccentric moment and the greater is the
centrifugal force. The speed of the rotating unbalanced shaft (vibratory
frequency) also influences centrifugal force. But, it’s the size of the
eccentric moment that most influences vibratory drum movement. Merely
changing the vibratory frequency will change the centrifugal force but
does not change drum movement.

This “unbalanced” centrifugal force moves the drum up and down as the
eccentric weight makes its 360 degree of rotation. Of course, the only
useful drum movement is its movement downward into the material to be
compacted.

Centrifugal force by itself can not be used to classify how much com-
paction energy will be delivered by a vibratory compactor. Other machine
characteristics like drum weight and amplitude are important factors.

A drum with a given weight will CF = 30,000 lb

the influence of a given
eccentric moment.
Compaction
Drum weight -- The vibratory drum, either smooth or a padfoot, is con-
nected to the yoke assembly by rubber isolators. In a sense, the drum is
free to move independently of the yoke. A drum of a given weight will
move a certain distance under the influence of a given eccentric moment.

Larger Drum
Movement
VPM of
1860 (31 Hz)

Weight at Drum
12,280 lb
(5570 kg)

A larger eccentric moment CF = 52,600 lb

means more centrifugal force (234 kN)
and more drum movement if
drum weight is the same.
Compaction

If centrifugal force is increased — by increasing the eccentric moment —

and drum weight stays the same, the amount of drum movement increas-
es. If the eccentric moment (centrifugal force) is decreased, the amount of
movement for the same drum decreases.

Likewise, for a given eccentric moment (centrifugal force), drums of

varying weights will move varying distances. Lighter drums move more;
heavier drums move less when subjected to the same eccentric moment.
So it’s the ratio of eccentric moment to drum weight that determines the
drum amplitude of a given machine.

6
Introduction

Amplitude
0.071" (1.8 mm)

VPM of
1860 (31 Hz)

CF = 52,600 lb
(234 kN) The higher the amplitude, the
more the drum moves into the
uncompacted material, leading
to higher production.
Amplitude -- Amplitude is a measure of distance the drum moves into the
material to be compacted. Theoretically, a suspended drum (remember,
the drum is connected by rubber isolation mounts) will move a certain
distance when subjected to a certain unbalanced centrifugal force. As
long as the lift of material is able to accept it, some of the drum move-
ment is downward into the uncompacted material. The higher the ampli-
tude, the more the drum moves into the uncompacted material and the
faster density is achieved — leading to higher production.

But, the beneficial effect of high drum amplitude has limits. As the mate-
rial compacts and gets more dense, a relatively high amplitude is likely to
cause the drum to bounce — a condition sometimes referred to as decou-
pling. Drum bouncing occurs when amplitude is greater than what the lift
will accept. On machines equipped with dual amplitude, the operator may
want to select the lower amplitude setting to reduce or even eliminate
drum bouncing. Proper amplitude and a calculated balance of drum
weight and frame weight help prevent drum bouncing to create maxi-
mum, effective compaction.

Amplitude, or drum movement, is one of the key parts of vibratory com-

paction. The proper amplitude helps get compaction faster than if a mere
static load were applied to the lift.

PLI = 146 lb/in
Example using CP-533E: (26.1 kg/cm)
13,760 lb/(13.9 in2 x 2.5) = Compaction
396 lb/in2
Static linear load (PLI/PSI) -- For smooth drum compactors, the total
weight at the drum divided by drum width yields static linear force in
pounds per linear inch (PLI). For padfoot drum compactors, the weight at
the drum divided by the area of the pads in contact with the uncompact-
ed material yields static pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI). In
effect, this is how to rate the mass that is moving into the uncompacted
material.

Therefore, a heavy mass with relatively high amplitude is going to deliv-

er relatively high compaction energy and should be most productive —
but only when a lot of compaction energy is required and can be accept-
ed by the lift.

Heavier soil compactors combine drum weight with a heavier yoke

assembly to develop higher static load. The more important factor of the
two is the heavier yoke assembly. The heavier yoke assembly, in addition
to providing more static load, helps maximize compaction by negating
the tendency of the vibrating drum to bounce and by keeping the drum
amplitude directed downward into the lift.

When you are looking at soil compactors, you can class the “standard”
smooth drum units as having around 150 PLI rating. The heavyweight
soil compactors are going to have a PLI rating of around 200 and up.

Soil Compactor Comparison

The above chart is a partial list of Caterpillar smooth drum, 500E-Series
Soil Compactors and a comparison of important characteristics: machine
weight, weight at the drum, pounds per linear inch (PLI) at the drum,
maximum amplitude and centrifugal force. All units of measure are given
in English for the sake of simplicity.

Machine weight increases with each model. In each instance, the added
weight is put on the drum and/or yoke assembly so in effect, there is more
weight available to do the work of compaction. Amplitude, that is the
amount of drum movement into the uncompacted material, doesn't
change significantly — just the mass moving into the lift. Does the added
weight, expressed as PLI mean higher production? Yes, but only if the
application needs the added weight.

For the average soil compaction project — lift thickness of 4-10", densi-
ty specification 95 percent standard Proctor and compaction production
requirement under 1000 cubic yards per hour — the “standard” soil com-
pactors such as the CS-533E and CS-563E (150 PLI) are probably the
most efficient, cost-effective alternatives.

When lift thickness is higher than average for a given application,

machines with more weight at the drum, CS-573E and CS-583E (200 PLI
and greater) will usually be more productive.

Likewise, when the density specification is tougher than 95 percent of

standard Proctor, the heavier machines are likely to get density in fewer
passes and be more productive.

Continuing to think about when to select heavier soil compactors, you

may find that machines with more PLI or PSI are more productive when
compacting difficult materials or materials that are well graded. Heavier
compactors may also be effective at reaching acceptable density on mate-
rials that are below the optimum moisture content.

Your customers should be thinking of the CS-573E and CS-583E (not
shown) as insurance when there is a risk of not meeting density spec-
ifications and/or production requirements due to inconsistent job site
conditions such as moisture content, lift thickness or material type.

On some of the more demanding soil compaction applications, there

will often be a point where one heavyweight machine is able to
replace two standard weight machines or to get density when the
standard machines can not. That's when it makes sense to recom-
mend use of a compactor with 200 PLI rating or higher.

The pod-style vibratory system

delivers high compactive force
and ensures long bearing life.

Vibratory System
One of the most significant features of the CS-533E and CP-533E Soil
Compactors is the unique pod-style vibratory system which largely dif-
ferentiates them from the competition. The drum contains two pod-style
housings that enclose the proprietary eccentric weights. The weights are
mounted on a shaft supported by heavy-duty bearings, driven by a
hydraulic vibratory motor attached to the drum support. As the shaft is
rotating, the eccentric weights produce an imbalance that causes the drum
to vibrate.

The pods are assembled and sealed in a special clean room at the factory
to help ensure that the internal components are clean and free of contam-
inants. The pods have double shaft seals to help guard against contami-
nation once installed. Because of the decreased risk of contamination and
the use of synthetic oil, the change interval for the bearing lubrication is
every 3 years or 3000 hours. Should replacement be necessary, the pods
can be quickly replaced as an entire unit to minimize downtime.

The vibratory system is activated with an on/off switch on the propel

lever. In addition, a drum vibratory mode switch is located on the control
console. The operator can choose between high or low amplitude to
match the machine to the job specifications. The vibratory system is only
operational when the engine speed selector switch is in the high idle posi-
tion. With the throttle control switch placed in the high setting, drum
vibration occurs in both low or high propel speed ranges.

Benefits of the Vibratory System are:

Vibratory Specs
• Dual pod-style weight housings • Pod-style weight housing improves reliability.
• Proprietary eccentric weights
• Nearly maintenance free - 3 year/3000 hour pod oil change.
• Single frequency (standard)
• Dual amplitude settings • Simplified service.

Product Description

The proprietary eccentric

weight system provides
Low Amplitude High Amplitude consistent compaction results
and long service life.

Proprietary Eccentric Weights

The proprietary eccentric weight system on the CS-533E and CP-533E
Soil Compactors provides precise performance and long service life. The
cast steel weight housings contain steel shot that repositions itself
depending on the amplitude selected. This system eliminates heavy
weights slamming together when changing amplitude, or when starting
and stopping the vibratory system. This reduces the chance of metal frag-
ments contaminating the bearing lubrication system, and is also quieter
during starts and stops.

The direction the weight shaft rotates determines the amplitude. When the
operator switches between high and low amplitude the steel shot inside
the weight transfers completely to the opposite end of the weight hous-
ing. This assures consistent results and high reliability since there is no
chance of the high-strength spherical steel shot wedging together.

Benefits of the Eccentric Weight System are:

• Completely enclosed system improves reliability.
• Steel shot repositioned accurately each time.
• No metal fragments to contaminate the bearing lubrication
system.
• System reliability is superior to swinging mechanical weights of
competitive machines and is quieter during starts and stops.

exceptional productivity and
reliability.

Engine
The new CS-533E and CP-533E are powered by a four-cylinder
Caterpillar 3054C, turbocharged diesel engine that operates at 2200 rpm
rated speed. The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 and European EU Stage II
emissions control standards worldwide. Caterpillar is the only compactor
manufacturer that has its own line of engines, providing a single source
for engine and machine service.

The engine is mounted in-line behind the operator’s station and directly
over the rear axle. The engine location distributes the weight between the
front and rear of the machine. In addition, the engine position provides a
low center of gravity for good machine stability, excellent rearward visi-
bility and improved traction to the rear wheels. The fan, radiator and
hydraulic oil cooler are mounted behind the engine. The hydraulic oil
cooler tilts rearward for additional access to the radiator for cleaning.

The frame and hood design provide excellent access to the engine-mount-
ed hydraulic pumps, external engine components and routine mainte-
nance points. Four rubber mounts isolate engine vibration and help
reduce overall machine noise levels. A fiberglass hood covers the engine
and reduces spectator and operator sound levels.

Dual pumps provide flow to both the drum drive and rear wheel drive
motors independently.

If the drum or rear wheels spin, the other pump can still build pressures
up to relief to provide adequate torque. The propel pumps are variable-
displacement, axial piston type mounted in tandem providing oil to the
two-speed motors. One of the propel pumps supplies oil to the drum
motor and the other propel pump supplies oil to the axle motor. The pro-
pel system is a closed-circuit hydrostatic system.

Product Description

Main hydraulic pumps are

easily accessible under the
operator’s platform. Hydraulic
connections use O-ring face
seal fittings minimizing chance
of leaks.

Hydraulic System
The new CS-533E and CP-533E, like the entire Caterpillar vibratory
compactor family, is a total hydrostatic design. Engine output is used to
drive four in-line hydraulic pumps which in turn provide steering, drum
and axle drive (propel) and drum vibration.

All systems are supplied by a single hydraulic tank. All hydraulic oil sup-
plied to the hydraulic system passes through a 5-micron nominal charge
filter. The filter supplies oil to the propel and vibratory systems. A low
charge pressure alarm system alerts the operator of a problem in the
hydraulic system such as a plugged filter. A visual and audible alarm will
occur at the operator’s instrument panel if a fault is present. The hydraulic
oil tank and fill spout are located on the right side of the machine under
the operator’s platform. A visual indicator located on the oil tank near the
fill spout allows for quick and easy check of hydraulic oil level.

Hydraulic connections use O-ring face seal fittings. Pressure test ports
and S•O•SSM valves provide simplified monitoring of hydraulic systems.
Hydraulic hoses are held securely in place with polyurethane routing
blocks.

Benefits of the Hydraulic System are:

• Completely hydrostatic design.
• O-ring face seal connections help maintain system integrity.
• Hydraulic test ports simplify testing system pressures.
• Polyurethane routing blocks neatly secure hoses.
• S•O•S valves simplify maintenance. Hydraulic System Specs

an effective, durable scraper
system to help prevent build up
of material on drum surface for
high quality compaction results.

The padfoot shell kit provides

customers a simple and cost-
effective solution for jobs that
may require both padfoot and
smooth drum compaction.

Smooth Drum, Scrapers and Padfoot Shell Kit

The CS-533E has a drum shell thickness of 25 mm (1") to withstand
coarse material for long drum life. The drum is mounted to the yoke by a
series of rubber isolators which absorb drum vibration and prevent it from
being transferred back into the yoke and machine frame.

A steel V-style scraper mounted with three isolation mounts on the front
of the drum is standard. An optional second steel scraper can be mounted
at the rear of the drum. The isolation mounts allow the scrapers to effec-
tively clean the drum surface while providing scraper flexibility. Optional
polyurethane drum scrapers are also available which provide a front and
rear scraper for continuous contact with the drum surface.

For added versatility, an optional two-piece padfoot shell kit is available

for the CS-533E. This enables the smooth drum to be converted to a pad-
foot style drum. The two-piece shell kit features a total of 120 pads with
a pad height of 90 mm (3.5"). Includes heavy-duty individually adjustable
scraper teeth and a special bumper that provides a secure area to store the
smooth drum scraper plates when not in use. The padfoot shell halves can
be quickly and easily installed or removed in about an hour with the use
of an approved lifting device.

Product Description

The closed loop hydrostatic

drive system provides dynamic
braking when the propel lever
is moved to the neutral detent
position. This is the normal way
to slow and stop the machine.

Brake Systems
The CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors have two brake systems –
primary and secondary. Primary braking is provided by the closed loop
hydrostatic propel system. When the propel lever is in the neutral detent
position, no flow is directed out of the propel pumps so the machine
stops. Moving the propel lever to the neutral detent is the normal way to
slow and stop the machine.

Both machines have a spring-applied/hydraulically-released wet disc-

type brake mounted on the drum drive gearbox for secondary braking.
The secondary braking system stops the machine in emergencies and
secures the machine when parked. The secondary brake can be activated
by: the switch on the operator’s control console; loss of hydraulic oil
pressure; or when the engine is shut down.

A red light on the secondary brake switch illuminates when the brake is
engaged, and an interlock prevents driving through the brake. The propel
system will not operate until the brake is released and the propel lever is
returned to the neutral detent position.

Benefits of the Brake Systems are:

• Primary braking is hydrostatic.
• Secondary/park brake is spring-applied, hydraulically released.
• An interlock prevents driving through the park brake.
• Secondary/park brake switch illuminates when engaged.

Product Description

Low-effort, power-assist
steering reduces operator
fatigue.

Steering System
A priority-demand, hydrostatic steering system provides smooth low-
effort steering. The steering system has priority over other hydraulic func-
tions. Hydraulic flow is supplied by a gear-type pump located on the end
of the in-line hydraulic pump package. The steering pump also serves as
the charge pressure pump for the propel system.

The hydraulic steering system is an open-circuit, priority-flow system uti-

lizing a Hand Metering Unit (HMU). The priority-flow system provides
steering flow regardless of other hydraulic demands. The HMU, located
at the base of the steering column, is a non-reaction control unit that
delivers oil to the steering cylinders only when the steering wheel is
turned. When steering wheel motion stops, the oil flow bypasses to the
propel charge system.

Two double-acting steering cylinders receive flow from the HMU to

articulate the machine and provide steering action. The angle of articula-
tion is up to 34 degrees on either side of center. Maneuverability is an
important selling point for soil compactors and the CS-533E and
CP-533E compare favorably to competitive models in this category.

Benefits of the Steering System are:

• Priority-demand system ensures steering power regardless
of other hydraulic demands.
• Low-effort hydrostatic steering. Steering System Specs
• 3.68 m (12' 1") inside turning radius
• Hand metering unit is a non-reaction type. • 5.81 m (19' 1") outside turning radius
• 2.90 m (9' 6") wheelbase
• Tight turning radius for excellent maneuverability.
• 34º steering angle each direction
• 15º oscillation angle each direction

form is standard on machines equipped with a cab.

Other features that make servicing of these machines simple include leak-
resistant O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings, hydraulic test ports, S•O•S
valves and remote grease points.

Hydraulic hoses are held neatly in place with polyurethane routing

blocks. The blocks separate hoses helping ensure that they do not rub on
one another to provide long life and high reliability.

The hitch features sealed-for-life bearings that effectively eliminate the

need for greasing or maintenance. The steering cylinders feature remote
grease fittings to simplify lubrication.

The electrical system uses two 12-volt maintenance-free Cat batteries that
are connected in series to provide 24-volts and 750 cold cranking amps.
The batteries are located under the lockable engine hood.

Electrical wiring is color-coded and numbered. Plus, nylon-braided wrap
