Introduction
Application
Ideally suited for medium to large construction projects with low to mod-
erate grades, typical applications for the CS-533E and CP-533E include
but are not limited to; highway or street construction, rental operations,
and both residential and industrial site development.
The CS-533E and CP-533E Vibratory Soil Compactors are the most pro-
ductive, reliable and versatile in their class and will consistently yield
high quality compaction results.
Drum configuration selection depends on the soil type and the density
requirements of the job. Smooth drums are most effective on granular
materials such as sand, gravel and crushed rock. They are also used on
semi-cohesive soils with up to 50 percent cohesive soil content. Padfoot
drums produce the best results in cohesive soils such as gumbo or clay.

Introduction
Customer Profile
The primary customers for the CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors
are medium to large earthmoving contractors with private contractors
making up the majority of users.
Any contractor who is involved in site preparation or base work will own
one or more soil compactors. Machine productivity and reliability are of
high concern whoever the end customer may be because the soil com-
pactor can often dictate the pace of the job. If soil density is not correct
at each stage of the job, the whole job can shutdown.
The CS-533E and CP-533E are versatile machines for numerous com-
paction projects ranging in size from medium to large. Due to the many
different soil types and applications that soil compactors operate on, it’s
important to have the productivity, reliability and versatility that the
CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors offer.
The CS-533E and CP-533E compete in the 8.0 - 11.9 metric ton
(8.8 - 13.1 U.S. ton) size class and make-up the largest volume of all
Caterpillar vibratory soil compactors that are sold, leased or rented com-
bined. Customers of the CS-533E and CP-533E will be primarily rented
CS-533E by contractors who value productivity, reliability, price and availability as
• Smooth drum their most important buying criteria.
• Granular to semi-cohesive soils
• Sand, gravel, crushed rock Dedicated dealer rental fleets continue to grow rapidly and consist of
• Clayey or silty sand
rent-to-rent units and Cat® Rental Stores. With the release of the CS-533E
CP-533E and CP-533E, it’s estimated that the rent-to-rent units will make-up about
• Padfoot drum 50 percent of the units in the dealer rental fleet for those customers who
• Cohesive soils want to rent for longer time periods. The Cat Rental Stores would then
• Clay, sandy or silty clay consist of the remaining 50 percent dealer fleet rental units.
• Silt, clayey silt or sand

vibratory drum movement.
This “unbalanced” centrifugal force moves the drum up and down as the
eccentric weight makes its 360 degree of rotation. Of course, the only
useful drum movement is its movement downward into the material to be
compacted.
Centrifugal force by itself can not be used to classify how much com-
paction energy will be delivered by a vibratory compactor. Other machine
characteristics like drum weight and amplitude are important factors.

(234 kN) The higher the amplitude, the
more the drum moves into the
uncompacted material, leading
to higher production.
Amplitude -- Amplitude is a measure of distance the drum moves into the
material to be compacted. Theoretically, a suspended drum (remember,
the drum is connected by rubber isolation mounts) will move a certain
distance when subjected to a certain unbalanced centrifugal force. As
long as the lift of material is able to accept it, some of the drum move-
ment is downward into the uncompacted material. The higher the ampli-
tude, the more the drum moves into the uncompacted material and the
faster density is achieved — leading to higher production.
But, the beneficial effect of high drum amplitude has limits. As the mate-
rial compacts and gets more dense, a relatively high amplitude is likely to
cause the drum to bounce — a condition sometimes referred to as decou-
pling. Drum bouncing occurs when amplitude is greater than what the lift
will accept. On machines equipped with dual amplitude, the operator may
want to select the lower amplitude setting to reduce or even eliminate
drum bouncing. Proper amplitude and a calculated balance of drum
weight and frame weight help prevent drum bouncing to create maxi-
mum, effective compaction.

Static linear load (PLI/PSI) -- For smooth drum compactors, the total
weight at the drum divided by drum width yields static linear force in
pounds per linear inch (PLI). For padfoot drum compactors, the weight at
the drum divided by the area of the pads in contact with the uncompact-
ed material yields static pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI). In
effect, this is how to rate the mass that is moving into the uncompacted
material.
When you are looking at soil compactors, you can class the “standard”
smooth drum units as having around 150 PLI rating. The heavyweight
soil compactors are going to have a PLI rating of around 200 and up.
8
Introduction
Machine weight increases with each model. In each instance, the added
weight is put on the drum and/or yoke assembly so in effect, there is more
weight available to do the work of compaction. Amplitude, that is the
amount of drum movement into the uncompacted material, doesn't
change significantly — just the mass moving into the lift. Does the added
weight, expressed as PLI mean higher production? Yes, but only if the
application needs the added weight.
For the average soil compaction project — lift thickness of 4-10", densi-
ty specification 95 percent standard Proctor and compaction production
requirement under 1000 cubic yards per hour — the “standard” soil com-
pactors such as the CS-533E and CS-563E (150 PLI) are probably the
most efficient, cost-effective alternatives.

Machine Selection
The chart above lists the recommended machine that should be selected depending on the application and layer
thickness for the CS-533E and CP-533E soil compactors. The key shows what machine would be good, better or
best for a selected application and layer thickness.
The CS-533E and CP-533E vibratory soil compactors provide high compaction performance in typical
applications where common fill lift thickness is less than 30 cm (12"). Ideal for medium to large construction pro-
jects with low to moderate grades.

Vibratory System
One of the most significant features of the CS-533E and CP-533E Soil
Compactors is the unique pod-style vibratory system which largely dif-
ferentiates them from the competition. The drum contains two pod-style
housings that enclose the proprietary eccentric weights. The weights are
mounted on a shaft supported by heavy-duty bearings, driven by a
hydraulic vibratory motor attached to the drum support. As the shaft is
rotating, the eccentric weights produce an imbalance that causes the drum
to vibrate.
The pods are assembled and sealed in a special clean room at the factory
to help ensure that the internal components are clean and free of contam-
inants. The pods have double shaft seals to help guard against contami-
nation once installed. Because of the decreased risk of contamination and
the use of synthetic oil, the change interval for the bearing lubrication is
every 3 years or 3000 hours. Should replacement be necessary, the pods
can be quickly replaced as an entire unit to minimize downtime.
14
Product Description
The direction the weight shaft rotates determines the amplitude. When the
operator switches between high and low amplitude the steel shot inside
the weight transfers completely to the opposite end of the weight hous-
ing. This assures consistent results and high reliability since there is no
chance of the high-strength spherical steel shot wedging together.

Engine
The new CS-533E and CP-533E are powered by a four-cylinder
Caterpillar 3054C, turbocharged diesel engine that operates at 2200 rpm
rated speed. The engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 and European EU Stage II
emissions control standards worldwide. Caterpillar is the only compactor
manufacturer that has its own line of engines, providing a single source
for engine and machine service.
The engine is mounted in-line behind the operator’s station and directly
over the rear axle. The engine location distributes the weight between the
front and rear of the machine. In addition, the engine position provides a
low center of gravity for good machine stability, excellent rearward visi-
bility and improved traction to the rear wheels. The fan, radiator and
hydraulic oil cooler are mounted behind the engine. The hydraulic oil
cooler tilts rearward for additional access to the radiator for cleaning.
The frame and hood design provide excellent access to the engine-mount-
ed hydraulic pumps, external engine components and routine mainte-
nance points. Four rubber mounts isolate engine vibration and help
reduce overall machine noise levels. A fiberglass hood covers the engine
and reduces spectator and operator sound levels.

Product Description
The engine air filter service indicator is located near the air cleaner for
easy reference. Engine exhaust vents out the top of the engine hood,
directed up and rearward. Its location helps prevent exhaust from blow-
ing ground-level debris as on some competitive units.
The glow plug starting aid system enhances engine starting in cold tem-
peratures by warming each cylinder. The glow plug circuit is activated by
a momentary switch located on the right side of the instrument panel.

If the drum or rear wheels spin, the other pump can still build pressures
up to relief to provide adequate torque. The propel pumps are variable-
displacement, axial piston type mounted in tandem providing oil to the
two-speed motors. One of the propel pumps supplies oil to the drum
motor and the other propel pump supplies oil to the axle motor. The pro-
pel system is a closed-circuit hydrostatic system.

Hydraulic System
The new CS-533E and CP-533E, like the entire Caterpillar vibratory
compactor family, is a total hydrostatic design. Engine output is used to
drive four in-line hydraulic pumps which in turn provide steering, drum
and axle drive (propel) and drum vibration.
All systems are supplied by a single hydraulic tank. All hydraulic oil sup-
plied to the hydraulic system passes through a 5-micron nominal charge
filter. The filter supplies oil to the propel and vibratory systems. A low
charge pressure alarm system alerts the operator of a problem in the
hydraulic system such as a plugged filter. A visual and audible alarm will
occur at the operator’s instrument panel if a fault is present. The hydraulic
oil tank and fill spout are located on the right side of the machine under
the operator’s platform. A visual indicator located on the oil tank near the
fill spout allows for quick and easy check of hydraulic oil level.
Hydraulic connections use O-ring face seal fittings. Pressure test ports
and S•O•SSM valves provide simplified monitoring of hydraulic systems.
Hydraulic hoses are held securely in place with polyurethane routing
blocks.

Product Description
The suspension seat is fully adjustable to include fore and aft positions,
bottom cushion height, suspension stiffness, flip-up armrests and a 76
mm (3") wide retractable seat belt.
The propel lever and parking brake switch are located to the right of the
operator’s seat on the control console. The control console features a
height adjustable, padded wrist rest that helps reduce operator fatigue
while propelling.
Low noise levels both at the operator’s station and at ground level allow
for greater operator comfort and less noise emitted to the surrounding
environment. A standard rubber floor mat on the operator platform pro-
vides the operator sure footing and also reduces noise and vibration trans-
mitted to the operator. Four heavy-duty rubber mounts isolate the opera-
tor’s station from the machine frame to reduce vibration.

Product Description
Good operator visibility and excellent service access are achieved with
the CS-533E and CP-533E new rear hood design. The sloped fiberglass
hood provides excellent visibility to the outside edge of the rear tires and
to the rear of the machine from the operator’s station. The sloped hood
allows the operator to see obstacles measuring 1 meter (3' 3") high and 1
meter (3' 3") to the rear of the machine. Exceptional visibility in all direc-
tions increases productivity when working near obstructions or maneu-
vering around the job site.
The CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors are simple to operate allow-
ing crew members with minimal vibratory compactor operating experi-
ence to learn quickly. This also makes these machines a perfect fit for
rental operations.

A steel V-style scraper mounted with three isolation mounts on the front
of the drum is standard. An optional second steel scraper can be mounted
at the rear of the drum. The isolation mounts allow the scrapers to effec-
tively clean the drum surface while providing scraper flexibility. Optional
polyurethane drum scrapers are also available which provide a front and
rear scraper for continuous contact with the drum surface.

Product Description
The padfoot drum has 140 pads welded on the drum in a chevron arrange-
ment. Each pad is 127 mm (5") high and has a pad face surface area of
89.4 cm2 (13.9 in2). Specs shown are for the standard round pad. The pads
are involuted to walk out of the lift without fluffing or “kicking up” the
soil around the pads. Also, pad height is greater than most competitive
padfoot drum models to allow for deep penetration of the pads when com-
pacting thick lifts and very cohesive soils.
24
Product Description
The yoke serves as the support for the drum. The yoke and hitch area
offer high durability, reliability and simplified service. All bolts are
recessed to reduce yoke width and reduce the possibility of catching on
side overhang obstructions.
The yoke is joined to the main frame at the hitch with one, vertically-
installed, hardened pin. Four permanently sealed tapered roller bearings
require no greasing. This design permits 34 degrees articulation in either
direction for steering. A horizontally-installed hardened pin in the center
of the yoke pivot area allows drum oscillation up to 15 degrees in either
direction up or down. The hitch area shares parts commonality with other
Caterpillar Soil Compactors. An articulation lock is provided to prevent
inadvertent articulation of machine during transport or while performing
service on the machine.
The drum can be removed for service without the need to remove the
bumper.

wheel housing on the left side of the engine. Two Cat, 12-volt batteries
are connected in series. The batteries are mounted in the rear of the
machine and are protected by the engine hood. The batteries are accessi-
ble from ground level. A standard 55-amp alternator provides ample cur-
rent during peak operation demand, and also keeps the 750 cca mainte-
nance-free batteries fully charged.
The fuse panel is located inside the right control panel near the platform
floor and contains fuses and relays. Three manual reset type circuit break-
ers are located on a panel inside the engine enclosure on the left side of
the machine.

Brake Systems
The CS-533E and CP-533E Soil Compactors have two brake systems –
primary and secondary. Primary braking is provided by the closed loop
hydrostatic propel system. When the propel lever is in the neutral detent
position, no flow is directed out of the propel pumps so the machine
stops. Moving the propel lever to the neutral detent is the normal way to
slow and stop the machine.
A red light on the secondary brake switch illuminates when the brake is
engaged, and an interlock prevents driving through the brake. The propel
system will not operate until the brake is released and the propel lever is
returned to the neutral detent position.
28
Product Description
Low-effort, power-assist

Steering System
A priority-demand, hydrostatic steering system provides smooth low-
effort steering. The steering system has priority over other hydraulic func-
tions. Hydraulic flow is supplied by a gear-type pump located on the end
of the in-line hydraulic pump package. The steering pump also serves as
the charge pressure pump for the propel system.
29
Product Description
Serviceability
Three areas of serviceability are strong selling features of the CS-533E
and CP-533E Soil Compactors: excellent daily service access; simple ser-
vice procedures; and grouped maintenance points. The durable sloped
fiberglass hood tilts forward with the use of two gas charged struts locat-
ed just inside the hood compartment. The hood can be locked when
closed. Once the hood is opened, the entire engine compartment and cool-
ing package is easily accessible.
The operator’s station tilts forward and locks to provide access to the
hydraulic pumps, hoses and electrical components. A hand-operated
hydraulic pump and cylinder for raising and lowering the operator’s plat-
form is standard on machines equipped with a cab.
Other features that make servicing of these machines simple include leak-
resistant O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings, hydraulic test ports, S•O•S
valves and remote grease points.
The electrical system uses two 12-volt maintenance-free Cat batteries that
are connected in series to provide 24-volts and 750 cold cranking amps.
The batteries are located under the lockable engine hood.
