WORDS by BECKY BURGUM PHOTOGRAPH by JOSEPH SINCLAIR Keen was already a hardcore fan – but of
the 2OO7 film starring Dakota Fanning
and Nicole Kidman, not the Philip Pullman
novels. ‘After I’d watched the film a few
hundred times, I knew her lines and would impersonate her constantly around the house,’
says Keen. ‘But I never read the books until after my audition.’ She is now, of course, a lover
of the books as well as the film, and Pullman’s glowing approval of her performance at the
screening premiere even brought her to tears.
Aside from basking in the approval of literary legends, it’s the powerful representation
of a young female hero that makes this role so important to her. ‘Usually all of the heroes and
leads are men. Then if there is a female lead, she’s often using her sexuality to manipulate
people,’ says Keen. ‘What’s amazing about Lyra is that she could completely be a man.’

Lyra’s gender is inconsequential, and Keen hopes this will teach

young boys – just as much as girls – that women can be heroes, too.

on the renowned AW95 ‘Highland Rape’ show) and J.Crew

The designer, based in north London, had something
quieter in mind: understated style with wearability at its
heart. ‘It was time to test my own vision,’ she says from the
home she also works from. Since that moment in 2O17,
her test has paid off. Ferian (which takes its name from
the Old English for ‘to carry’) creates bags and jewellery
that are ‘modern and timeless’. She left a full-time role as

OFFICE LIFE BC (BEFORE COVID) FEELS LIKE A VERY LONG

TIME AGO. Now, there are one-way systems and desks have to
be booked in advance, while many of us expect to be working from
home well into 2O21. And as daily routines have changed for office
workers, wardrobes have also had to adapt. We asked three women
to tell us how they’ve been mixing business with leisurewear, and
styled them in our favourite versatile work looks from Very.

AS THE SAYING GOES: WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS. In March, I was marooned
in Manchester at my parents’ house as the heavens opened. A storm was
brewing outside as cases of Covid-19 surged. Because of lockdown, I found
myself separated from my partner of seven-and-a-half years by the M6; a barrier
only marginally bigger than the huge chasm that had developed between us.
We’d been a little rocky beforehand but, by May, when I managed to smuggle
myself back to London to be with him, things were looking terminal. We’d argued
about where to quarantine, how much attention we should be paying each
other in lockdown, how little attention we paid each other in normal life, both
busy filling our time with demanding jobs and social lives. But really the bigger
question that neither of us had the courage to ask was:
if we died during this crisis, would we be happy knowing
we had spent so many years shackled together?
Or was now the time to chase new experiences?
It might seem dramatic to think that a virus could “THE BIGGER

to the rest of the world, and then, much like the virus
itself, the effects began rippling to shores closer to home.
‘There is no doubt that lockdown put pressure
on relationships,’ says Sandra Davis, a partner in family law at London firm
Mishcon de Reya who has worked on divorce cases for 4O years, with clients
including Princess Diana and Jerry Hall. ‘In the early days of lockdown,
people weren’t able to engage in extracurricular activities. Without the usual
outlets, any negativity in relationships intensified and fractures already there
developed into breakages,’ she explains.
Since lockdown, she has seen enquiries flooding in, spiking in July when
restrictions eased and couples who had been unhappily living together finally
emerged. ‘We’ve been very busy. Many lawyers have stated that enquiries are
significantly higher than usual for this time of year,’ confirms Davis, who says that
recently couples have been forward-planning for potential future lockdowns
because they now know what could be around the corner: ‘People have been A year ago, Aimee felt the most settled she’d ever

‘Partners are always delegating emotions to

each other,’ says Perel. ‘One minimises; one
maximises. One implodes; one explodes. But
in high-stress situations, that polarisation is more
intense.’ For most relationships, these periods of
high stress are surmountable. Life as a couple
involves a degree of separation: you’re not by
each other’s side all of the time. In the pandemic,
however, that polarisation was exacerbated as
couples lost a sense of freedom and individuality
within their relationships. ‘Our lives and roles are
typically contextualised by physical locations,’
continues Perel. ‘We commute, go to the gym,
go to the office, spend time at home. The past
few months have seen those contexts collapse.

to have some breathing room from her ex-partner.
While arguments over housework and childcare
are nothing new among couples seeking a
separation, according to Caroline Elliott, head of
family law at Shakespeare Martineau Nottingham,
the huge increase in the pandemic workload and
the proximity of lockdown living has meant that
these issues are becoming more acute. ‘Juggling
everything has been a massive stressor,’ she explains.
Because of lockdown rules, which meant you
couldn’t leave the house other than to exercise or shop
for essentials, people had very small windows to liaise
with lawyers privately. ‘I had people who were calling
me on the way to the supermarket or while they were
on a walk because they were stuck in the house and
couldn’t get on the phone to seek advice,’ Elliott says.
In addition, the division of assets can take a nasty
turn – particularly as the economy nosedives
and the value of property, for example, becomes
more uncertain. This is the case for one of Elliott’s
clients, who was put on furlough in lockdown.
As her marriage crumbled, she decided to buy
her husband out of the house. But redundancy
was too much of a risk. ‘In normal circumstances,
she could borrow a bit more on the mortgage and
pay him off, but now it’s likely they will
have to sell the home,’ says Elliott.
Not all couples who have seen
their marriage break down this year are

ANOBSESSION WITH THE RURAL IDYLL IS INSPIRING MORE PEOPLE

TO ABANDON CITY LIFE. BUT WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY LIKE TO LEAVE

BEHIND YOUR METROPOLITAN EXISTENCE AND, IN SashaWilkins’ CASE,

ABANDON YOUR ENTIRE IDENTITY? PHOTOGRAPH by ED BARRETT-BOURMIER

IT’S QUITE HARD TO DRIVE A TRANSPORTER VAN when you are crying
so hard that your chest is heaving and your nose is running so much you
can’t breathe properly. I discovered this as I left my beloved London flat
for the very last time in July this year to follow the removal lorry containing
all my furniture. I was headed to the Cotswolds to start a new life in the
English countryside, at least two-and-a-half hours from London, where
Deliveroo doesn’t operate, and you can’t buy a lemon at 2am.
This isn’t the first time I’ve made a life-changing move. In the spring
of 2OO7, I uprooted myself from London, the city where I was born,
to move 3,455 miles across the Atlantic to the US. I had one bag, six
pairs of vertiginous Manolos, no permanent visa and no job offer, yet it
seemed like a thrilling adventure.
Thirteen years later, I am making a lifestyle change that seems vastly
more significant, more permanent and entirely ridiculous to someone
whose entire adult life has been spent in London, New York and Los
Angeles. On paper it doesn’t sound such a big deal compared to moving
to Manhattan but, back in 2OO7, I owned a flat in London so I always
knew that there was a return escape option if New York didn’t work out.
This time around, that flat is long gone (sold partly to fund the beginnings

WHEN ZENDAYA WAS ANNOUNCED as the winner of the Outstanding
Lead Actress in a Drama Series – awarded for her performance in
HBO’s Euphoria – during the Emmy Awards broadcast in September,
audiences were treated to a glimpse of the 24-year-old’s home, as well
as an unexpectedly emotional response. ‘This is pretty crazy – I don’t
really cry,’ she said, brushing aside her hair and dabbing her tears.
Behind her sat her family and team, screaming joyfully. It was a scene
tailor-made for 2O2O – uncanny and semi-apocalyptic, thanks to the
hazmat-suited presenter (just out of frame) who delivered the statuette.
Zendaya recalls the moment when her friend Timothée Chalamet calls
from France for an exclusive interview with ELLE – although she jokingly
admits she worried that her family’s long celebration might cue the
dreaded awards-show cutoff music.
Zendaya and Chalamet met on the set of Dune, the latest feature
film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel about a feudal
intergalactic empire of the distant future. (Originally due in cinemas in
December, its release has now been pushed into 2O21 due to Covid-19.)
Zendaya’s character, Chani, a warrior from the planet Arrakis – home to
the Fremen and the only known source of a highly coveted, awareness-
enhancing drug known as ‘spice’ – is initially wary of Chalamet’s
Paul Atreides, the heir to an aristocratic family who’s been tasked with
taking over her home planet, but the two eventually become close.
Even though the book was published in 1965 and the film was shot in
pre-pandemic 2O19, audiences may notice parallels to our current
reality – Arrakis’ harsh climate and giant sandworms, perhaps, versus
our own heatwaves and flying ants. But Zendaya remains optimistic. She
closed out her Emmy acceptance speech acknowledging that, while
Euphoria, with its gritty depictions of teen sex, drugs and trauma, might
not always be a shining example, ‘there is hope in the young people’.

ACANADIAN COCOON
Dramatically perched on elegant stilts, Newfoundland’s Fogo Island Inn is filled with cosy
furnishings, handmade by the local community, whose traditional skills include quilting, knitting
and woodworking. Each morning, wake to find a tray with coffee, tea and pastries outside
your door and, for later on, there are three wood-fired hot tubs perched on the rooftop to relax
in while watching icebergs float through the wild Atlantic waters – quite literally cool.

slight cracking sound indicates that Arctic

They’re trussed up in layer upon layer of heat-tech

Next up was TreeHotel, a winding four-hour drive through fairy-
tale vistas. We paused midway for large plates of unfussy local
food in the town of JokkMokk before arriving just after nightfall.
It’s hard to say what I loved most – the otherworldly rooms,
perched high in the frozen trees, or the atmosphere created by
owners Kent and Britta Lindvall. It’s rare for a luxury hotel to feel
as welcoming as staying with relatives. As we had supper, Kent
and Britta told us stories of former guests: Kate Moss taught
Britta how to pose for photos (lean to one side and smile with
your tongue behind your top teeth); when Richard Curtis came
to stay, he looked around before calling his friend Steven
(Spielberg); when Justin Bieber booked, he ended up escaping
in Kent’s truck to the nearby river to avoid a media flurry.

As I approached our final destination on foot, nothing could’ve
prepared me for the Arctic Bath hotel. The log-covered main
building – that floats in the summer and sits on ice in the winter
– contains the restaurant, spa and river pool. Six of the 12 rooms
are cabins on stilts; six are intriguing wooden boxes on the lake
with walkways to reach them. The interiors are the height of
Scandinavian minimalism, with pale wood and artful lighting
that reflects the Swedish principle of lagom, or ‘just enough’. Swedish paradise

your heart as running 7km. You warm up in the sauna until you
can take no more, then plunge yourself into the black waters.
This was how I came to be standing barefoot on icy steps.
Hesitate, and the fear becomes unbearable, so I powered on
until I was submerged. My body reacted faster than my mind.
And my body believed I was going to die. Panicking, I ran up the

Why burlap? It has been a reminder in the importance of
perspective. What may be perceived as the ultimate level of
limitation on someone or something’s purpose, is merely that,
one perspective. Change your perspective, even just slightly,
and another purpose can be realised. For the branding story of
eKaye, this has been a unique guidepost. Fashion is not about
fabric. It’s about expression, and the soul’s need for it. Think of
a time when a limitation was declared for you. Yet you had a
perspective that showed you a different way to succeed past
the point of anything another could see. We believe expression
helps light that way.
eKaye is a custom design house for women’s wear and men’s

Fashion Crossover London Advertorial Sponsorship of

Central Saint Martins Class of 2020
With the festive season inching closer each day, we join the holiday cheer
by announcing the fifteen industry selected Central Saint Martins (CSM)
recipients of the first Fashion Crossover London Advertorial Sponsorship
- ELLE UK. The designer service platform holds close ties with the world-
leading design and innovation institution, Founder Since Wang of Fashion
Crossover London, an alumna herself has worked continuously on existing
projects with CSM Programme Director Anne Marr since 2015.

Fashion Crossover London was founded on the principle of discovering

the next talent who breaks the mould and gives them a platform and the
exposure they deserve, with the latter being more pressing than ever before.
The class of 2020 has been faced with extreme challenges, forced to finish
their collections in quarantine and were pushed to seek the extremes of their
creativity with limited supplies. As such, the Fashion Crossover London
Advertorial Sponsorship - ELLE UK was born, financially supporting the
fifteen industry-endorsed talents from BA Jewellery Design, BA Textile
Design and MA Materials Futures of the CSM class 2020.

After the initial screening by Fashion Crossover London, the decorated

judges and Fashion Crossover London Designers Dame Vivienne Westwood
Award Winner Aurélie Fontan and Swarovski Sustainability Award Winner
Plaire Chaiphet offered a helping hand. Both no stranger to pushing the
boundaries through textile and design innovations. Their expertise was
matched by the notable celebrity stylists Manny Lago and Verity May Lane
who have previously worked with Niall Horan, Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa.

“The 2020 graduates have to be confident

about their achievements and recognise COURTNEY DURKA

the resilience they have, stay positive and

continue to seek out new opportunities.

If you can graduate from an art college in
2020 then you can do anything!”
says Programme Director Anne Marr
Proving that statement right while unveiling groundbreaking territory in the
fields of food and biomaterials were Sarah Graham and Riina Õun, as they
experimented with bacteria and transformed this into suitable textiles for their
sportswear and accessories, respectively. Molly Bonnell, stunned with her
collection of speculative objects made from household sugar, dealing with
the topical subject of medication. From food for thought to nutrition, Akane
Kawahara developed cutting-edge cutlery that voids the needs for artificial
flavourings, additives and sweeteners, while Sorawut Kittibanthorn impressed
the judges as he successfully turns poultry waste into a protein food source.

CSM Textile Design graduate Huichen Yu found inspiration in Monet’s water

lilies, as Yixin Sun’s looked to the sunset for a mix of vibrant colours seen
in her work. Yiwen Zhou honoured the different facets of being a mother,
as Nujoud Oweis collected objects from mother nature, giving them a new
purpose in the form of unique accessories.

Staying at sea, Mizuki Tochigi investigated the imminent impact of plastic

pollution, transforming it into abstract jewellery. Courtney Durka questions
the true value of jewellery as she turns sterling pennies into necklaces.
Creating order from chaos is Kewpie Chan, mending broken ceramics into
standalone pieces of jewellery, and Jing Han elevates the overlooked object of
rope, into eye-catching pieces of body-jewellery.

Siobhan Wallace externalises her personal DNA traits through her designs
while Molly Wu leads us through the different stages of love with her tongue-
in-cheek pieces of jewellery.

During this difficult period, Fashion Crossover London has continued to fulfil
its promise to support young graduate talents. This collaboration between
Fashion Crossover London and the fifteen talented graduates from Central
Saint Martins is monumental, as it further cements the fusion of commercial
success with raw creative talent in a year when the fashion industry ventures
through a particularly challenging social landscape.
