Design Outline:
As a part of the Design exercise, this semester, a deliberate attempt will be made to design Dwelling
units with aspects like space, light, movement, scale and structure involved in formulating and
articulation of spaces which relates to transforming “Space” into “Dwelling”, considering factors
influencing memories from childhood. The students will be introduced to the challenges of vertical
zoning, treatment of common spaces, structural implications and incorporating communal living in
their design. Special emphasis will be given to materials and sustainable methods of construction.

Introduction:
Housing is a basic human need and a fundamental aspect of peoples lives. It is a place where
people spend most of their time. Housing can be defined as a physical structure that provides
protection from the environment, a sense of security, and a place for personal and social
development and interaction. There are various types of housing in India, ranging from
traditional to modern styles of architecture like-
Villas, Apartments, Bungalows, Row houses, Penthouse, Duplex house, Hutments, studio
apartment etc.

1. Space planning: Start by considering the functionality of each space within the
apartment. You'll want to ensure that each room is designed to serve its intended
purpose, and that there is adequate circulation space between areas. Pay special
attention to areas like the kitchen and bathroom, which require careful planning to
optimize storage and functionality. These areas also need to be carefully designed
with regard to services.

2. Lighting: Lighting is crucial in any space, and can greatly impact the look and feel of
an apartment. Ensure that each room has ample natural light, and consider using a mix
of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
3. Storage: One of the biggest challenges in designing an apartment is finding ways to
maximize storage space. Consider built-in storage solutions like floor-to-ceiling
shelves or cabinets, and look for ways to incorporate storage into unexpected areas
like under the bed or in a small nook.

4. Materials and finishes: Choosing the right materials and finishes is important for
both aesthetic and practical reasons. Consider factors like durability, ease of
maintenance, and suitability for the climate and location of the apartment.

5. Sustainability: As sustainability becomes increasingly important, consider

incorporating eco-friendly features into the design of the apartment. This could
include things like energy-efficient appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures, rain water
harvesting and sustainable building materials.

6. Safety: Finally, safety should be a top priority when designing an apartment. Ensure
that there are adequate fire safety measures in place, and consider things like slip-
resistant flooring in wet areas and child-proofing features for families with young
children.

The studio this semester is going to deal with 3 different types of apartments:
● Low cost housing
● Apartments for the retired
● High end sustainable green apartment

These will be a combination of 1BHK,1.5 BHK , 2BHK,2.5 BHK and 3BHK depending on
the program. The Students have to prepare the area statement and program after studying
their individual type of apartments.

Housing Units:
1BHK - 1 bedroom with living, dining space kitchen to a max floor area 85-110 sqmt.
1.5 BHK - 1.5 bedroom with living, dining space kitchen to a max floor area 100 sqmt.
2BHK -2 bedroom with living, dining space kitchen to a max floor area 95-140 sqmt.
2.5BHK -2.5 bedroom with living, dining space kitchen to a max floor area 125 sqmt.
3BHK -3 bedroom with living, dining space kitchen to a max floor area 140-185 sqmt.

Site location and Area:The site is located in Hegganahalli and bettenahalli village,
Chapparkallu Rd, Devanahally, Karnataka surrounded with lush green vegetation and also many
housing projects are nearby.
