For a given r > 1 l e t C 0 ( r ) be the maximal length of

the sequence of consecutive integers each d i v i s i b l e by one
of the f i r s t r primes. Then the results of [4] imply

C Q (r)<g r 2 expflog r ) 1 3 / U

while in [ 3 ] i t i s proved

(1 ) C0(r) r 2 log 2 r .
p
Jacobsthal asked whether C ( r ) = c 0 ( r ) an<^ whether C ( r ) r .
The aim of this paper i s to prove (1) f o r C ( r ) . Modify-
ing the arguments used in [3] we shall show that s l i g h t l y
more i s true.
T h e o r e m . There exists an absolute constant c > 0
such that f o r a r b i t r a r i l y chosen primes q 1 , . . . q p , r > 1 each
i n t e r v a l of the length

contains at least r integer numbers coprime to q-j...qr.
C o r o l l a r y . We have

C(r) r 2 log2 r .

2. The shifted sieve

The idea of the shifted sieve was inspired by the work of
Halberstam and Richert [2] .
Let i be a f i n i t e sequence of integers, Q a positive
square-free number and

On the problem of Jacobsthal 3

For a l l d | Q l e t us introduce quantities

a €cii
as o (mod d)

and assume that they s a t i s f y the inequality

(R) |p d | " fTdll ^ A

where the constants A, B, X as w e l l as the multiplicative
function f ( d ) are > 1.
Let there be given another square-free number P and a
multiplicative function g ( n ) 1 f o r a l l n | P. Suppose
that Q and P have the same number of divisors and l e t
1 be one-one multiplicative correspondence between them.
Finally suppose that f o r a l l n I P, d I Q, n = 1(d) we have

(2) g(n) < f(d).

We are now in position to formulate

3. The proof of the theorem

Let A be a sequence of X consecutive integers. Then
the number ^ ¿ l of elements from A which are divisible
by d is approximately equal to X/d, precisely we have

Hence condition (R) is satisfied with A = 1, B = 1 and
f(d) = d.

The proof is very complicated and utilizes some differen-

be best possible. Note that in the Selberg upper bound me-

thod the remainder term can also be estimated by the value of

order y/log y (see [ 5 ] ) .
Now we have everything to prove the theorem.
For a r b i t r a r i l y given primes q^ < . , . < q , r > 1 l e t us
put
<3 = • • '<) r i z = Pr, = Pit i = 1,...,r,

where p^ stands f o r the i - t h prime number. Then the fun-

ctions g(n) = n for n | P and f ( d ) = d f o r d I Q s a -
t i s f y ( 2 ) . Thus from Lemmas 1 and 2 we obtain

(7) SU,Q)>X |~| (1 - 1 )

j log(s—1 )

If C i s a s u f f i c i e n t l y large absolute constant and

,-1

o p
then the r i g h t hand side of (7) i s > y/log z > r . This com-
pletes the proof of the theorem.
Added in the proofs. Recently R.C. Vaughan [6J derived
from [3] the estimate C(r) r2log4r.
