The reason that we have oltered the lifting method is to eliminate the risk of formation of cracks at the lifting holes ond, besides, to facilitate the mainte- nance work and reduce the time used for drawing of pistons. In some cases much time is used for cleoning and recutting the holes in the piston crown before fitting of the tool. With the above-mentioned method the lifting tool engages the upper ring groove. As appears from the instruction the piston is supported through the scavenging port, and the crosshead is turned to its bottom dead position. A special nut is screwed on to the piston rod end, and the piston is turned up to its top dead pasition by means of the crosshead. The lifting tool is fitted in the upper ring groove, ofter which the piston com: plete is lifted out of the engine. When fitting the pistons again, complete with stuffing box, the tool guides os well the piston rod as the stuffing box, so that the guide pin between piston rod and croishead, and the guide pin between stuffing box and stuffing box flange in the scavenging box, are correctly fitted. BURMEISTER & WAIN 2 Tests have shown that the new piston overhaul procedure can reduce the working time. Besides, the engine room crane will, to some extent, be evailable for other work, due to the fact that the crasshead is used for turning the piston complete out of the cylinder liner. When ordering for the first time pistons without threaded holes please note that tools have to be ordered in accordance with what is mentioned obove. At later ordering of pistons, please state that the pistons have to be without lifting holes. Yours faithfully, BURMEISTER & WAIN ENGINEERING COMPANY LIMITED C Nel Plate 10. Turn the piston to top dead centre. Remove the cylinder cover. Remove the locking device for the piston rod nut. Remove the piston rod nut. Remove the inspection cover of the scavenging air box in way of the scavenging air ports of the cylinder liner and fit the support 0152 for the piston in the scavenging air box, so that the tool projects through one of the scavenging cir ports. The spring will pull the tool backwards in the scavenging air port. Remove the screws between stuffing box and flange. Gently turn the piston towards bottom dead centre while pressing the tool in the scavenging air port inwards against its stop on the outside of the cylinder liner. Check that the tool has been fully depressed when the piston lower part lands on the tool. Complete the turning to bottom dead centre whereby the piston will be left suspended on the tool in the scavenging air port. Mount the guide 0241 for the stuffing box on the piston rod. Fit and pre- tighten the nut 0518 a few turns at the piston rod end, Mount the two guide tube halves 0330 and 0429 and tighten them against the guide 0241 by means of the nut 0518. Turn gently to top dead centre while making sure that the stuffing box guide does not hitch at the flange for the stuffing box. 80352 Remove the uppermost piston ring and clean the ring groove, or, if the piston is provided with a special lifting recess, clean this and then mount the lifting tool 0121 on the piston. 12. 8 803 C (03) 13. If there is not sufficient headroom above the engine, lift the piston with rod ond stuffing box carefully so far out of the cylinder that the lifting toa! 0210 can be attached as shown. Then lower the piston until the collar incr of the lifting tool rests on the eylinder finer, Change the crane hook over to the lifting tocl 0216, and the piston with rod and stuffing box can now be tiltec out of the cylinder liner and lowered on to the support as mentioned ebove. The guide pin in the guide tube is to be guided in the corresponding hole in the crosshead and is indicated towards the camshaft side. Attach the stuffing box to the guide 80351/0241 with the screws 0190, making sure that the guide pin at the bottom of the stuffing box housing faces the some side os thet in the guide tube. Tum the crosshead to top dead centre. Carefully lower the piston into the cylinder until the piston rod end rests fon the crosshead. Check that the guide pin in the tool hits the guide pin hole in the crosshead Remove the lifting tool 80352/0121 and fit the uppermost piston ring if this had been removed. Fit the support 80351/0152 for the piston in the scavenging air port, see section a 5, dismantling of piston. Then turn the crosshead carefully towards bottom dead centre. When the red line N on the guide F 3.1 appears under the flange for the stuffing box, stop the turning and remove the screws 0190 for the stuffing box tool. Continue the turning carefully towards bottom dead centre until the piston lands on the support fitted in the scavenging cir port, see section a 7, dis- mantling of piston. $ 803 C (03) 10. nN. 12. 13. 15. 16. 7. 18. S$ 803.53 Turn the crosshead to bottom dead centre and remove the tool on the piston rod end. Turn the crosshead upwards, so that the piston is lifted free of the support in the scavenging air port. Make sure that the guide pin between the piston rod and the crosshead is guided correctly in the hole, and that the contact faces cre clean. If the guide pin does not enter the hole in the crosshead, the piston should ‘again be landed on the support in the scavenging port. Turn the crosshead to bottom dead centre and place the guide ring 0169 on the crosshead with the flattened edge at the guide pin hole so that the hole is free. Turn the crosshead upwards until the piston is clear of the support in the scavenging air port. Fit the strop 0258 on the piston rod, and turn the piston to its correct position. Remove the strap 0258, and turn the crosshead until the piston rests on the support. Remove the guide ring 0169, and turn the crosshead upwards so that the piston goes clear of the support. Remove the support 80351/0152 and fit the cover of the scovenging air box. Tighten the stuffing box to the flange under the scavenging air box and secure it. Mount the piston rod nut. The greatest care should be exercised. The con- tact faces of nut and crosshead must be in a fine condition, plane, smooth, ‘and free from scratches. Besides, the contact faces should be thoroughly cleaned and smeared. Carry out the tightening by means of the hydraulic tool and in accordance with the relevant tightening instructions. a: PLATE 80352 (12) DISMANTLING OF PISTON AND PISTON ROD ETC.
