Title : At least six dead after fire engulfs hostel in New Zealand capital

Authorities in New Zealand are still trying to determine how many people died
in a blaze that tore through a hostel in the capital Wellington overnight, killing at least
six. Fire crews were called to Loafers Lodge hostel in the city center just after midnight
local time and found the top floor of the four-story building well alight, according to a
statement from Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
As firefighters fought the blaze, 52 people were evacuated but it’s unclear how many
people were inside at the time. Late Monday, Urban Search and Rescue Squad members
were still determining whether the building was safe to search.
It’s not clear what caused the fire.
Tala Sili, who was staying in the hostel, told CNN affiliate Radio NZ the experience
was “really scary.”
He said he saw smoke coming under his door on the top floor of the hostel, and he
jumped two floors onto the roof of a nearby building, where he was ultimately rescued
by paramedics and treated for a sprained ankle.
Local politician Paul Eagle told RNZ the transient nature of many of the building’s
residents was making it hard for authorities to determine who may have been inside the
building during the blaze.
“It’s not unusual that they won’t know exactly who’s there right at that moment because
people can come and go all the time,” the Rongotai MP told RNZ. “It’s a simple place,
there’s a roof over their heads, simple lodging.”
According to the Loafers Lodge website, the hostel offers 92 rooms with common areas,
kitchens and laundry facilities within walking distance of Wellington Hospital in
Newtown.
Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson told reporters that many residents had “lost
absolutely everything that they had.”
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Hipkins visited the site on Tuesday and expressed
his sympathy for the victims and their loved ones.

Title : It feels like heaven’: How Xavi’s defensive revolution brought La Liga
title back to FC Barcelona
Barcelona’s ascent back to the top of Spanish football has been faster than
anyone – even the most optimistic of ‘Culés’ – could have imagined.
With a 4-2 away victory at city rival Espanyol on Sunday, Barcelona secured the team’s
first La Liga title in four years after a turbulent period for the club both on and off the
pitch. Celebrations at the RCDE Stadium were cut short, however, as some Espanyol
fans rushed onto the pitch to confront the Barcelona players as they were enjoying the
festivities.
But the chaotic end to the night will do nothing to dampen Barcelona’s joy and
such has been the Blaugrana’s dominance this season, Xavi’s side clinched the trophy
with four games still remaining and his iteration will undoubtedly go down as one of
the greatest defensive teams in La Liga history.
The record for the fewest number of goals conceded by a team in a single 38 -game
season is 18, held jointly by Deportivo La Coruña (1993-94) and Atlético Madrid
(2015-16).With only 13 goals conceded so far this season, Xavi’s Barcelona is set to
obliterate that record.
After the pain of Lionel Messi’s departure, financial turmoil and now the
looming ‘Caso Negreira’ scandal, this title will no doubt taste all the sweeter.
“Not only for me, but for the club and for all Barcelona fans it’s very important to win
La Liga,” Barça striker Robert Lewandowski told CNN Sport ahead of the match
against Espanyol.“We know that we’re going to do it and then we can, I hope, celebrate
with the fans because it will be something amazing, something huge. It’s been a few
years since Barcelona has won this title, so we’ve done well.
“We won so many games that were very tough. I think the first round [of fixtures] was
very important, we proved that we can think about winning La Liga.
“We know that it’s a process, we do things step-by-step and this kind of title can help us
and the team a lot.” But just how has Barça gone from European laughing stock to the
king of Spain? ‘Defensive’ isn’t necessarily a word fans would associate with
Barcelona, with much of the club’s recent history defined by attacking play based on
intricate passing patterns – and whatever magic Messi could conjure up.

Title : After a record-breaking season, Erling Haaland is on track to become ‘the
best striker ever’
Erling Haaland’s arrival at Manchester City last summer was met with equal measures
of excitement and curiosity. At the age of 22, the Norwegian forward had already
established himself as one of the best goalscorers in European football – first at Red
Bull Salzburg, then with two prolific seasons at Borussia Dortmund.
But now he was moving to a team already replete with attacking talent and a league in
which big-name signings have come and gone without leaving an impression.
Would he adapt to life in the Premier League? The answer has been yes, emphatically –
even to the extent that Haaland has surpassed the expectations of some of his greatest
admirers during his first 10 months at Man City.
“I didn’t expect him to break the records in the first season, to be honest, but I knew
that he would fit in – that the team, the coach, the environment would take him to a
higher level,” Otto Addo, the former Ghana manager who mentors young players at
Dortmund, tells CNN Sport.
The numbers behind Haaland’s first season defy belief. He’s scored 51 club
goals in 47 games this season: 35 in the Premier League, 12 in the Champions League,
three in the FA Cup and one in the League Cup.
Only Dixie Dean, who scored 63 in the 1927/28 season, has more goals in English
football during a single top-flight campaign.
Haaland’s Premier League tally, which includes four hat-tricks, is a league record for a
single season, breaking the previous mark held jointly by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.
Shearer and Cole recorded their 34-goal seasons at a time when Premier League teams
played 42 games, rather than the current 38; Haaland currently has four games
remaining to add to his haul, including when City faces Everton on Sunday.

Erling Haaland breaks English Premier League single-season scoring record:

The Manchester City forward has had a better scoring season this campaign than some of the
league's greatest players of the Premier League era.
Forming a potent partnership with midfielder Kevin De Bruyne – perhaps the best
passer of the ball in European football – Haaland has made an immediate impact at
City. But De Bruyne’s laser-like passing hasn’t been the sole reason for his success, nor
the excellence of teammates Jack Grealish, Rodri, or Bernardo Silva, to name a few.
Haaland, Addo observes, has modified his game to devastating effect since arriving in
the Premier League, taking his pace, power, and deadly finishing to another level.
“I think he’s learned to be patient, to wait for the situation in the box and to take the
right runs inside the box,” Addo says.
“Even though there were games where you didn’t see him too much on th e ball, you
could see that he was always ready. Even if it’s in the last minute, he’s always ready to
score, always ready to make the right run in the right situation.”

Title : Chelsea wins historic Women’s FA Cup final with a 1-0 victory over
Manchester United
Chelsea won its third consecutive Women’s FA Cup in front of a record crowd at
Wembley, triumphing 1-0 over Manchester United in the final thanks to a well-taken
Sam Kerr goal in the 68th minute. It is a pattern which has been repeated all season:
Chelsea soaking up pressure, sitting back while its opponents create chances, before
pouncing with a clinical incisiveness.
Manchester United, playing in its first ever major cup final, will rue its missed
opportunities – a goal ruled out in the opening minute after Ella Toone was inches
offside, several shots on target that didn’t quite have the power to sneak past Chelsea
goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and a period of dominance in the first half which didn’t
translate into goals.
But, ultimately, this was a day for Chelsea and Kerr who held on to win the FA
Cup final in front of a record 77,390 fans at a sun-dappled Wembley.
“I think it’s the sign of a great team, we didn’t have our best game but we pushed
through,” Kerr told the BBC afterwards. “Everyone stuck at it and we got the win.”
It was a historic match in so many ways – the first time a women’s FA Cup match had
sold out at Wembley, the first time Manchester United had reached the women’s FA
Cup final, a world record crowd for a women’s domestic match, and the first time the
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used in this competition.
VAR came into play almost immediately as Leah Galton found the back of the net after
just 20 seconds following a sweeping Manchester United attack, but her effort was ruled
out for offside.
nited continued to dominate the early exchanges even as the game settle d into a
less frenetic rhythm, defying its status as the underdog.
Only a last-gasp save from Berger prevented Millie Turner from scoring on 30 minutes
as the ball bobbled around the penalty box following a long-range free kick.
Twelve minutes later, it was United’s Mary Earps who prevented Lauren James scoring
as she scooped the ball as it was heading towards the top corner of the goal, after
sprinting across from the opposite goal post.
after half time, Manchester continued engineering several goalscoring opportunities but still
could not find that final clinical edge.
Finally, Kerr put Chelsea ahead, prodding in Pernille Harder’s perfectly-weighted pass to
stem all of United’s momentum, and she celebrated in style with a cartwheel and a backflip.

Title : Burnt-out remains of Romain Grosjean’s F1 car from Bahrain crash to go
on display
The wreckage of Romain Grosjean’s Formula One car from his crash at the 2020
Bahrain Grand Prix will be displayed at an exhibition in Madrid next month.
Grosjean was trapped in the flaming car for 28 seconds after colliding with the track
wall at close to 120 miles per hour.
He eventually managed to climb out of the car in what would be the Frenchman’s final
act as an F1 driver.
After recovering from the burns he sustained in the crash, Grosjean has transitioning to
other forms of motorsport and will compete in the Indy 500 for the second time later
this year.
The burn-out chassis of his Haas car from the Bahrain GP will form part of the world’s
first Formula 1 Exhibition in the Spanish capital, which opens on March 24.
The display will be accompanied by a video installation showing unseen footage from
the crash, as well as an interview with Grosjean recounting the experience.
“From my point of view, it was a big accident, but I didn’t realize the impact or how
violent it was from the outside,” Grosjean says in the interview.
“It was only the next day when I asked someone to show me what it looked like that I
realized. My wife was actually watching that race with my dad and my kids. They will
remember that moment their entire life. They were just spectators waiting to hear
something… waiting to see something from Bahrain.”
After the incident, debate ensued about the safety of F1 drivers during serious crashes.
Speaking to CNN Sport two years ago, Grosjean acknowledged that the halo, the
mandatory protection device fitted on F1 cars, saved his life.
In order to escape the flames, Grosjean had to break the headrest with his helmet and
pull hard with his trapped foot to remove it from the chassis. After freeing himself, he
was transported to the hospital and treated for burns on his hands and ankles.
Grosjean ended his F1 career with 10 podiums from 179 race starts, and since 2021 has
raced in IndyCar with Dale Coyne Racing and, more recently, Andretti Autosport.
He placed 13th in last season’s IndyCar series and 31st in his debut Indy500.
