Emails 107 108 Neutral vs formal In business people usually write emails in a neutral style which is simple, direct, brief and friendly. Units 49-51 all show this neutral style. There is also a more formal style that is careful and polite, and uses longer, standard expressions. This style may be appropriate in some situations, for example if you want to make a good impression on someone outside the company, or you want to ask a favour from a colleague. First line Neutral emails begin with just the name, or Hi/Hello + name, or no name at all. Formal emails open with Dear ++ Mr/Mrs/ My + family name, Ms is used for a married or unmarried woman, Mrs for a married woman only. You can also write Dear + first name to be a litte less formal. Formal phrases: examples Study these examples. A neutral (N) version is given first. then a more formal (F) version. ‘Opening, Né Hope you're well FT hope you are wel IN: Great to see you again.
