Historical Background “Excelsior”
One of the most iconic cities in the world was first discovered by an Italian named Giovanni da
Verrazano in 1524, and it was only a hundred years later in 1624, that the first Dutch colony and
trading post, Fort Orange (now Albany) was established in New York State. In the following years,
the first governor, Peter Minuit, purchased the island of Manhattan from the natives and founded
the
Dutch colony known as New Amsterdam with 1,500 inhabitants. In 1628, slaves arrived and played
a
significant role in building the settlement. In 1653, Governor Peter Stuyvesant established the first
municipal government, which was based on the Dutch system. In the same year, the settlement built
a
wall to protect itself and the street alongside it was named and still known as Wall Street. The
colony
was taken by the British in 1664 and renamed New York, honoring the Duke of York.
In the 18th century, the population of New York had grown to 5,000 inhabitants and continued
rising
rapidly. The colony was evolving and improving its amenities. The first newspaper, New York
Gazette, began publishing in 1725; the first theatre opened in 1732, and the first college, King’s
College
(now Columbia University), was founded in 1754. In the mid-1700s, a seven-year war called the
French and Indian War, pinned French and Canadians against the British and American colonists
with natives on both sides, fighting for control over the territory. This war is said to have set the
stage
for the American Revolutionary War. By 1775, Fort Ticonderoga was overpowered by Benedict
Arnold
and the “Green Mountain Boys,” marking the start of the Revolutionary War. In the following year,
New York declared its independence after serving as a British colony for more than a century,
becoming part of the original 13 colonies. In the Battle of Long Island in 1776, New York lost to
the
British and served as the British base of operations for the rest of the war.
In 1777, New York State first constitution was adopted, and George Clinton was elected as
governor.
A commission created the first seal of New York State with the purpose of using it as the crown
seal
that was used in the British years. The seal contained figures representing Justice and Freedom: an
American eagle spreading its wings, a rising sun, and the Latin word “excelsior,” meaning “ever
upward.” The New York constitution had significant influence on the United States Constitution as
New York served as the nation’s first capital in 1785 and the succeeding years.
The colonists retook New York as the last British military post in 1783, and the last of the
Redcoats’
troops were evacuated under George Washington, who was named the first president of the United
States of America in 1789.
What eventually would be known as one of the city’s leading industries, started a few years back
with
the founding of the Bank of New York, one of the oldest corporations in the country. Around this
time,
informal trading took place in or close to Wall Street for a number of years, eventually motivating a
group of merchants to assemble and sign an agreement to only make trading transactions with each
other, giving birth to the New York Stock Exchange in 1792.
By the 1800s, the population had reached 60,000 inhabitants, and in 1820, New York became the
largest city in the country with a population of 123,000. The city and the population were growing
rapidly in a chaotic manner. However, in 1807, a commission was appointed to design a plan for the
city, and the plan was presented four years later. The plan called for a pattern grid of 12 avenues
from
north to south and 155 streets from east to west, and the pattern would keep expanding as the city
kept growing. The grid pattern continues to shape New York today. In the same year, Robert
Fulton’s
North River Steamboat was launched, signifying a new period in transportation. In accordance to
the
new period, the Erie Canal, an artificial waterway of 580 kilometers that connected New York City
with the Great Lakes, opened in 1825. As for many other cities in its path, the waterway brought
