Lecture note 7: Transfer Moulding
Transfer moulding is developed in an effort to overcome these limitations
of compression moulding

Materials: This process is also widely used for thermosetting material. It is

also applicable for thermoplastic materials. For thermoplastic materials, we
have to arrange cooling arrangement into the mould.
Process: The transfer moulding is similar to compression moulding except
that the moulding material is pressurized in a separate chamber and then
forced through a nozzle into a closed mould instead of the moulding
material being pressurized in the cavity. This is shown in the following
figure.

Advantages:
ü It improves the temperature distribution between the material and the
mould.
ü Due to the better temperature distribution, the rate of crosslinking
reaction is also fast.
ü Cycle time reduced means higher productivity.
ü Flow of the material is very good here.
ü Due to the better flow of the material the complicated shape can be
produced.
