THREE HORIZONS

THINKING
By: Panganiban, Janina Maria L.

Company:
Camaya Coast
ESG intervention:
Sustainable Construction
Overview
The three horizons model is a tool used to think about the future of the company;
particularly, it allows the business to project and manage its growth.

As Camaya Coast aims to expand its amenities and facilities through

construction projects, it is undeniable that such activities entail growth in all
aspects of the business—however, certain instances can make it for better (if
managed properly) or for worse (if mismanaged or neglected).

Delving on the use of sustainable construction and the growth it

entails, certain identified innnovations can be utilized to
(1) mitigate the adverse effects of current patterns and
(2) amplify future aspirations/benefits of
the business.
Mitigating the adverse effects of current patterns
Referring to the diagram, sustainable construction would touch upon the business'
current/usual primary pattern of the expansion of facilities and amenities which
consequently entails excessive water and electricity consumption as well. Should the
expansion of facilities and the excessive use of utilities continue and be left unmanaged,
the business would incur issues such as the increase in carbon footprint and global
warming, the depletion of resources, the contamination of nearby rivers, and the
ncrease in air, land, and noise pollution.

To mitigate these, Camaya Cost will employ several innovations under the sustainable
construction ESG. First, the business will procure and use construction materials
from environmentally conscious suppliers (those that use eco-friendly materials) in
order to address the said environmental issues of the depletion of natural resources and
the increase in carbon footprint and global warming. Using plasform panels in
prefabricated construction methods are deemed to lessen the mentioned
environmental issues as well since the panels are recyclable and the said prefabricated
method calls for less deliveries and assemblage, leading to less use of fuel and less
carbon footprints too. Moreover, since construction consequently entails the excessive
use of water and electricity, the resort shall also use electrocoagulation and the
maintenance and updating of current systems and facilities for water usage, and the
use of solar panels for electricity consumption to ascertain sustainability in the resort's
utilities.

Amplifying future aspirations/benefits

Once Camaya Coast employs the said innovations under sustainable construction, the
business is poised to have the long-term future aspirations/benefits of meeting the
demands of tourists/satisfy their want and need for more and new resort facilities
and amenities. Not only would the resort be able to meet their demands—the resort
would also be able to provide a clean enivornment for them to enjoy in. This means that
there would be less/no water and land pollution in the resort area.

Delving on the profit side of the business, it is perceived that by using the innovations on
sustainable construction (including the sustainable usage of water and electricity),
operational costs would be reduced. This is attributed to the fact that sustainable
construction (i.e., the use of environmentally friendly materials and methods) costs much
less than traditional/conventional construction, with an average of 14-19% in
operational savings (link: Dallonses, 2022).
Introducing the business to growth & change
As a leader, the intervention that I can do to have Camaya Coast organization/employees
embrace sustainable construction (H3) and the innovations (H2) it involves is to
conduct a project orientation.

Change may leave people to be uncomfortable and reluctant of the adjustments, and
would rather stick to the business' norms. To address this reluctance, this project
orientation shall explain the rationale, future/long-term benefits, and processes of
sustainable construction. As the employees are provided with such background and
knowledge, they would be less apprehensive towards the changes and adjustments
that would happen as the business expands its facilities and amenities. The orientation is
also set to serve as a platform for an exchange of feedback and suggestions among
the employees, the management, and the contractors. Since the employees of the
business are involved, they would be more willing and engaged with the changes in
Camaya Coast.
