From the Ground Up

FRONT ROYAL, VA – July 8, 2023. In 2012, Jasper Jennings had been in search for several

months for a change of pace. Something new, exciting, freeing, fresh, and something that allows

him to do things on his own terms. Working a corporate job had become rather tiring for

Jennings, and he was done suffering under the conditions and rules of someone else. Losing

hope, Jennings decided to keep moving forward with his current career, however, he did not

realize just how quickly things would change for him.

Late one summer evening, on his way home from work, Jennings noticed a for sale sign

outside of a rundown building. He pulled over on the side of the road and looked around the

property, and he knew that this was meant for him. What Jennings had been hoping and waiting

for has finally happened. This was the moment that changed everything for him and gave him the

biggest opportunity he had ever desired, which is to own his own business.

Jim’s Country Store
After months of planning and renovation, Jennings was finally ready to open his first

business. He named it “Jim’s Country Store” after his grandfather who always believed in him

and supported all of Jennings dreams and aspirations. Jennings’s grandfather had passed away a

year prior to him starting his own business, and he knew, deep down, that his grandfather helped

provide him with this perfect opportunity.

While Jennings feared all the “what ifs” that come along with owning your own business,

he knew that this was meant for him. He pushed down his anxieties and fears and moved forward

knowing that everything was going to work out for him. From the beginning, Jennings did not

understand just how much of a community center piece that Jim’s would become.

Jennings knew that not only was the price range perfect, but also the location, and this is

what led him to making the decision to purchase. Having lived in Shenandoah Farms for over 10

years, Jennings loved the thought of providing a store/deli for all the members of the community.

Being a long-time member of the community also helped aid in the success of Jennings

newfound business.

What started out as a brand-new business became an everyday staple for many members

of Shenandoah Farms. It is a communal gathering place that allows members of the community,

old or young, to visit and chat with each other. Whether it’s over a meal from the deli or a quick

stop for a drink, members can chat and converse each day that they are in the store. Jim’s did

exactly what Jennings wanted from the start, which is to bring members of the community

together.

Jim’s Country Store
Years later, Jasper Jennings has created a successful small business that is a cornerstone

of the community of Shenandoah Farms. He has built a business in which he is proud of and that

he enjoys working at which was Jennings’ goal from the start. All he wanted was to be happy

with his career and feel like he’s making a difference, and Jim’s Country Store has accomplished

just that.

Many current employees rave about Jim’s and the job in which it has given them. From

the cooks to the cashiers, each member of Jim’s Country Store truly loves and enjoys their job.

They are most happy with how kind Jennings is regarding schedules and time-off. He allows

them to, for the most part, set a schedule that works for them which many jobs don’t allow. For

many, this is why they started working at Jim’s because they are in school, working around their

children’s schedule, or even working two jobs. Jennings has built an environment in which his

employees feel like equals, and he makes sure they know he is thankful and cares about them.

The reason why Jim’s Country Store is as successful as it is, is because of Jasper

Jennings. He has put his whole heart and soul into this business, and it shows. This is not just

about money to him, but rather it is about building a business in which he is proud of. Having the

right mindset is what has taken Jennings to the top in everything that he does. This trait is what

Jennings attributes completely to his grandfather. His grandfather’s undying love and support is

what Jennings believes set him up for success.

Jim’s Country Store is what Jennings has always desired and it shows from the inside out.

From the employees to the food and environment, Jim’s is a space that many call home. Jennings

told me that he “is forever grateful for the amazing opportunity that was presented” and that he

“truly has been blessed in so many different ways”. As you can see, Jim’s is not just a money-

making venture for Jennings, but rather a place in which he is proud to call his own.

first owner passed away and the store is now run by Jasper Jennings. The store has all your
