Peterson coi
+ Peterson coil is an iron cored inductor used to connect the neutral of the three-phase system
to the earth. In other words, the neutral of the three-phase system is grounded through the
Peterson coil.
+ Generally, this grounding is used to minimize the capacitive charging current or earth fault
neutralizer during the fault in the lines.
+ This also eliminates the arcing ground, so it is also called an Are suppression coil.
Connection diagram of Peterson coil for LG fault:

(Peterson coi
Let's consider that LG fault has happened at phase C. Then the current flowing through the phase
Cle= la + Ie
The current through the Peterson coil |, = Vph/ w L
Where
Vpy = phase voltage of a 3 - phase system, w is the angular frequency, Lis the inductance of Peterson
coil
But the fault current lc = 3 Vph / Xc
Here, Xc is the capacitive reactance and Xe = 1/ wC
Therefore to neutralize the fault current,
Von/ w L = 3 Vph / Xe
=> Ww b= 3 wo
=> L=1/3weC
WhereC = capacitance of charging capacitor
Thus to neutralize the capacitive charging current or earth fault, the value of the inductive reactance of
the Peterson coil is equal to 1/ 36.
Calculation:
Given,
f=50Hz—= w = 2nf= 100n
C= 1pF
From the above concept, if decided to use an earth fault neutralizer then the reactance to neutralize (X,)
will be,
Tp=24= 1
X_ = 10610
