1 Preface
Screen form part of an asphalt mixing plant.

In terms of process technology, all Ammann asphalt mixing plants are designed
and manufactured in accordance with the customer's individual requirements and
wishes. As a result of this, each plant is different as regards structure and configu-
ration. This also refers to the positioning and structure of the screens.

The following information will be useful to you as the owner or operator of an

asphalt mixing plant, even before you start operating the screen; it serves as a gui-
deline that will enable you to carry out your supervisory obligations in order to avert
damage and consequent costs.

After the approval procedure required for set-up and operation has been comple-
ted, the familiarisation of the plant staff commences with the construction. This is
conditional upon the placement of an order and technical processing. During this
phase, Ammann provides advice and support for the customer.

During the construction phase, the plant operators must be familiarised with the
plant and/or the screen. This takes place in close cooperation with Ammann's
installation manager.

This refers to the set-up and installation of the units and equipment, the laying of
the supply lines and the cabling work for the electrical and control lines (including
fuse protection, earthing and many other aspects). The protective equipment and
hazard points must also be taken into consideration.

Checks must be carried out to ensure that it is safe to walk on the plant, and that
all handles, hand rails and shut-off devices with safety circuits, etc., are present.

The emergency and fault switch-off equipment must be inspected to verify its
accessibility and function.

The presence of the mandatory warning and prohibition signs must be verified.

Indications of maintenance points and plant components requiring maintenance

must be agreed between the customer and the installation manager.

After the plant or a section thereof has been handed over, the plant operator/cus-
tomer must have full mastery of the procedure and must be familiar with the safety
equipment, circuits and switching devices.

In addition to the requirements described in the present Operating Instructions, it

is also essential to comply with the conditions imposed on the basis of the opera-
ting approval, the environmental protection provisions (TA Luft, WHG), and the
general accident prevention regulations.

6 Installation and commissioning

6.1 Installation

NOTE
The screen is marked with warning symbols which must be noted and heeded.

During installation and commissioning, the requirements specified in the section on

"Installation and commissioning" in the Operating Instructions for the Asphalt
Mixing Plant must be followed.

As a basic rule, the installation of the vibratory screen should be undertaken by

specialist Ammann staff or at least under the supervision of a set-up foreman made
available by Ammann. Installation and fixing of all components must be carried out
exclusively in accordance with Ammann factory drawings.

The vibratory screen is pre-assembled when delivered.

For a mixing plant with one row of hoppers in the hot mineral silo (see the Operating
Instructions for the Mixing Tower), the screen is mounted on the topmost element
of the hot mineral silo. A screen adapter may be used for installation.

For a mixing plant with two rows of hoppers in the hot mineral silo (see the Ope-
rating Instructions for the Mixing Tower), the screen is mounted on the flap box

Electrical connections

6.2 Electrical connections

Choice of staff
Electrical installation work must only be undertaken by authorized specialist staff!

In order to prevent damage to the leads due to vibrations, the individual leads must
be laid by the shortest possible route from the lead entry to the terminal board in
the terminal box.

NOTE
When laying the leads, ensure that they cannot come into contact with any hot or
rotating parts of the plant.

6.3 Installation

6.3.1 General information

DANGER OF FALLING
During installation work on the mixing tower!
The vibratory screen is installed at a great height..
Ö Use protective equipment to prevent falling!
Keep constant eye and radio contact with the crane operator!

6.3.2 Electrical motors

Any work on electrical motors must only be undertaken when they are switched off.

NOTE
Disconnect the motors from the mains in accordance with the five safety rules.

Protect motors from being switched on again: to do this, turn the main switch off
and secure it with a lock.

18 AZ-66323
Connecting motors

Compare the information on rating signs with the type of power, the mains voltage,
the mains frequency and the required power, speed and mode of operation.

When connecting the electrical motors to the supply network, the rating sign data
must be noted and compared to the appended circuit diagram.

Connect the motor directly in a delta configuration, not in a star delta. This makes
it possible to ensure that the resonance speed is rapidly passed when starting up,
and a high starting moment can be achieved.

The mains feed line must be carefully connected by a qualified individual. The feed
line cross-sections must be adapted to the maximum nominal power level. Provide
strain relief for the connecting cables.

It is essential to connect a protective conductor as specified in VDE 0100 to the

marked earthing screw. Use the original seal when closing the terminal box.

Seal any entry openings which are not required so that they are dust-and water-
tight.

Direction of rotation

The motors (and the exciter for the screen) are normally suitable for operation in
both directions of rotation.

NOTE
For linear vibratory screens, both the motors must rotate in opposite directions to
one another

The vibratory motors are designed for continuous operation at 100% centrifugal
force or uninterrupted operation (this is only valid for 50 and 60 Hz).

If the phases are connected in sequence L1,L2 and L3 to motor terminals U1, V1
and W1, the direction of rotation is right-handed (viewed from the drive-side end of
the shaft). .

Changing the direction of rotation

The direction of rotation can be reversed by transposing any two mains feed lines.

Motor protection

In accordance with DIN VDE 0165, every motor must be protected against imper-
missible heating due to overload, by means of a monitoring device.

The motors must only be used for continuous operation, and only for normal
switch-on procedures which do not recur frequently, so that no major start-up hea-
ting can occur.

NOTE
The connections to the relevant switching devices (contactor, protective motor
switch, etc.) must be made by the customer.
All the necessary protective equipment must be connected without fail before star-
ting operation of the motor.

Scale to measure the stroke and angle of vibration

Measuring the vibration width (stroke)

Measurement principle:
Each point on the vibrating screen body describes the nature and size of the vibra-
tion, or traces an image of the vibration. Suitable options for measuring this image
are as follows:

Method 1

Find a point on the side wall (e.g. the centre of a screw) or draw a point (e.g. particle
impact). This point will trace the vibration, which can then be measured with a fol-
ding ruler.

24 AZ-66323
The point traces a line
h
The length of the line = vibration width

Example of a directed vibration

Method 2

Glue a sheet of paper to the side wall and slowly trace a line across the sheet with
a ballpoint pen. A band will be traced due to the movement of the vibrating screen
body and the ballpoint pen.

Bandwidth = vibration width h

h

Attention: with a directed vibration, the line must be drawn transversely to the direc-
tion of vibration, otherwise h will be measured incorrectly.

Method 3

As described for methods one and two; this method is used to measure the mag-
nitude of the vibration width.
Provisional measurement sheet on squared paper:

AZ-66323 25

Provisional measurement sheet

Estimate the approximate stroke (e.g. 5 mm) and draw lines separated by this dis-
tance on the sheet of paper. Draw lines at intervals of 1 mm more and 1 mm less
on the paper (for 5 mm, draw lines at intervals of 4 and 6 mm).

Reading: glue the paper to the side wall, and the vibration width corresponds to the
line intervals where a sharply defined line can be seen. All commonly used stroke
measuring instruments operate according to this method.

Sharply defined lines correspond to the stroke

Measuring the direction of vibration (angle measurement)

Rule: the angle of vibration is always measured from the horizontal.

26 AZ-66323
45°
Angle of vibration

Horizontal

Angle of vibration

Measurement principle

Every line located in the direction of vibration is only moved on its axis by the move-
ment of the screen body. As a result, it traces a sharply defined line.

Suitable option for measuring with a provisional measuring sheet:

A sheet of paper which has been folded singly at 45° offers a simple way of seeing
whether the angle is more or less than 45°.

Fold a sheet of paper as shown in this sketch.

For a more exact method, fold the sheet of paper lengthwise and transversely
again through the intersecting point of the first two fold lines. Using a geometrical
set-square or another angle measuring device, draw lines through this point at ang-
les of 15°, 30°, 60° and 75°.

Refining the measurement

Position the sheet of paper on the side of the screen. Use a bubble level to measu-
re the horizontal position.

Positioning the sheet of paper.

When the screen is operated, the direction of vibration can be measured using the
sheet.

The movement blurs all the lines except for one.

The well-defined line corresponds to the direction of vibration of the screen.

28 AZ-66323
The sharply defined line - at 60° in this case - indicates the direction of vibration.

6.4.4 Temperature range for the vibratory screen

Normal tensioning elements can be used at temperatures of up to 300° C.

Heat-resistant tensioning elements must be used at temperatures of up to 450° C.

Operation of the Ammann vibratory screen is not permitted at temperatures in

excess of 450° C!

6.4.5 Adjusting the screen body in relation to the screen casing

There must always be a leeway of 50 mm between the vibrating screen body and
the fixed components. This also applies if there is a build-up of material.

immediately.

NOTE
No further measures are required before starting operation each day. The vibratory
screen is started automatically by the control system.

34 AZ-66323
7.3.2 Mode of functioning

The hot elevator conveys hot mineral with different particle sizes into the screen
intake.

The vibration motor causes vibrations in the screen housing which are transferred
to the screen mats.

The mineral is conveyed away from the intake due to the vibrations and the down-
ward movement of the screen mats.

Particles which are smaller than the mesh gauge fall through the screen mats.
They drop onto more screen mats with increasingly narrow gauges.

Particles which do not fall through a screen mat are distributed through chutes at
the end of the screen mat.

In this way, the mineral is divided into particle sizes which are stored separately in
the hot mineral silo. The closer the particle size is stored to the screen intake, the
smaller it is.

Mineral that is larger than the largest mesh gauge of the screen falls into the last
hopper. This mineral comprises the oversize particles which are not usually fed into
the mixing process.

Bypass

Vibratory screens are equipped with one or two bypasses.

With the help of one or two changeover flaps, the mineral from the hot elevator is
not conveyed to the screen mats, but into the first or second silo hoppers instead.

This mineral has the same particle sizes as the mineral charged during the pre-
feed.

7.3.3 Starting daily operation

NOTE
Before starting operation each day, the staff must make sure that all the safety
equipment is fitted.

Check the screwed connections.
Make sure that all vibrating parts are screwed in firmly!
Check the fabrics or the screen mats. (These may have to be dismantled first.)
Check the distance from stationary components such as hoppers, flaps, etc.

Mineral is not correctly screened.

Measure the vibration width and compare it with the machine-specific datasheets.
Check the fabric and/or the screen mats for damage..
Check whether the meshes have become clogged with screened material.
Check whether all fabrics and/or screen mats are present (use the spare parts lists
for this purpose)
Check whether the composition of the charging material has been changed.
Check whether there is a higher or lower charging rate.
The material for screening must be charged so as to ensure optimal utilisation of
the screening area in the intake zone.

Fabric breaks.

10 Disposal
If the vibratory screen is to be decommissioned definitively, safe and environment-
friendly disposal of all parts (especially the operating and auxiliary materials) must
be ensured.

Vibratory screens mainly consist of steel.

This can be sent for scrap after dismantling.

National regulations must be observed when disposing of the electronic compon-

ents.
The electrical lines should be sent away as scrap cable.

As well as the plant components, there are still some residues of oils and greases
in the screen.
Oils and greases are special waste and must be disposed of properly, e.g. at sui-
table collecting points.
Parts contaminated with oil are also special waste and must be disposed of proper-
ly.

Plastic parts can be recycled.

Send plastic away for recycling. Clean plastic that is contaminated with oil properly,
or send it away as special waste.

NOTE
Even small amounts of oil will pollute the environment, especially the soil and
groundwater.
During disposal, make sure that no oil reaches the soil or the waste!
