How to write a good book review

Many people tend to read books’ reviews before they start reading them. Students,
critics, and even book wormers sometimes are required to give a review of a
certain book. There are three important steps to write a good book review
including mentioning the main information about the book, telling the audience
about your opinion, giving your recommendation and rating of the book.
Talk about the book
First, it is good to start your review by giving basic information about the book.
You should begin with a hook which is a line that catches your audience attention
so they will continue reading. You may need to start with an argumentative
question like “Would you ever think of the ends of life on earth?” Then you
continue mentioning general information about the book. For example, the title, the
author, the publishing year if it is relevant to the book subject. After that, give a
brief summary of the book, but pay attention not to give too many details. Now
you can discuss different aspects of the book such as characters, themes, and plot.
You may need to test how well the author deals with these aspects. Be careful to
give enough information about the book before saying your own opinion.
What do you think of the book?
Second, the second step to make a book review is to tell the audience your personal
opinion. You should start of how well the title and the book subject are matched.
You may suggest changing the name of the book. Then start to discuss main and
major characters in the book by giving general features of every one. It is good to
mention here some important quotes that are related to your description of the
characters. For example, if you mention the cleverness of a character, support it
with a quotation by the character that shows how he is clever. Make sure your
quotes are short and sharp; long quotes are not recommended since they make your
audience feel bored. You can end up this step by a conclusion that summarizes
everything about the book including your opinion.
Rating
Finally, the most attractive step of reviewing a book is a recommendation and
rating of the book. You should say to whom you recommend this book. For
example, if it is an adventure novel, you could say that I recommended this book to
everyone like travels and adventures. Also, it is recommended to look for other
books talking about the same topic and mention it in your review. For instance,
you may say to your audience that if you are interested in this kind of books, you
should read 'x' which discusses similar themes. Finally, it is encouraged to send
your review by giving a star rating or your own style of rating; for example, 8 out
of 10 and so on. In fact, the rating is not so necessary but it may help to attract the
audience.
Keep practicing
Making a book review is not simple, but you can take it up by practicing. The more
you practice it following the mentioning steps above, the more professional you
will be. You should make sure that your review is enough and covers the main
information about the book.
