The NE40E uses the modular architecture. The physical architecture includes the
following systems:
•Power distribution system
•Functional host system
•Heat dissipation system
All systems except the NMS are located in an integrated cabinet. The power
distribution system consists of power modules working in N+N backup mode.
The following section describes only the functional host system.
The functional host system is composed of the system backplane, main processing
units (MPUs), line processing units (LPUs), and switch and fabric units (SFUs). It
connects to the NMS through NMS interfaces. The functional host system processes
data and monitors and manages the power distribution system and heat dissipation
system.

The logical architecture of the NE40E consists of three planes: data plane, control and
management plane, and monitoring plane, as shown in the figure.
•The data plane is responsible for high-speed processing and congestion-free
switching of data packets. It encapsulates and decapsulates packets, forwards
IPv4/IPv6/MPLS packets, performs QoS as well as scheduling and internal high-speed
switching, and collects statistics.
•The control and management plane provides all control and management functions
for the system and is the core of the entire system. Control and management units
process protocols and signals and configure, manage, report, and control system
status.
•The monitoring plane monitors the ambient environment to ensure the secure and
stable operation of the system. It detects voltage levels, controls system power-on
and power-off, monitors the temperature, and controls fan modules. If a unit fails,
the monitoring plane isolates the faulty unit promptly so that the other units remain
unaffected.

 PEM:Connects to the external power supply system and supplies power to the
NE40E-X8A.
 PM:Converts the power supplied to the PEM and supplies power to the entire
device through the backplane.
 You can configure PMs based on the board power consumption on the NE40E-X8A.
PMs work in N+1 bDCkup mode. The PMs that bDCk up eDCh other obtains power
from different power sources so that one can provide power when the other
becomes faulty. When the power supply system is fully configured with 7+1 PMs, a
maximum of 15400 W power is provided.

You can configure PMs based on the board power consumption on the NE40E-X8A.
PMs work in N+N backup mode. The PMs that back up each other obtains power
from different power sources so that one can provide power when the other
becomes faulty. When four pairs of PMs (8 PMs) are fully configured on a device with
the 220 V AC power supply system, a maximum of 10800 W power is provided. The
110 V double live wire input, instead of 110 V AC single-phase input, is supported.

Description
The system draws air from the front and discharges air from the back. The air intake
vent resides above the board area on the front chassis; the air exhaust vent resides
above the board area on the rear chassis. The air filters on the air intake vents are
vertically installed and featured with the curved face, large area, and small windage
resistance, helping to improve the heat dissipation efficiency.

lower board cage has an air channel. Both air channels draw air from the front and
exhausts air from the rear. The SFU slot area has an air channel. The air channel

Description
The fan module is located on the air exhaust vent. Each fan module contains six fans.
When a single fan fails, the heat dissipation system enables the system to work for a
short period of time at an ambient temperature of 40°C (104°F).
 A black sponge air filter on the air intake vent prevents dust from getting into the

system. The air filter can be removed and cleaned. Cleaning air filters once every
three months is recommended.
