I NTRODUCTION
National Institute of Fashion Technology conducts NIFT entrance exam for admissions to B.Des
and B.FTech programmes. Around 23,000 aspirants appear every year in the NIFT entrance
exam to get admission in their choice of design programmes.

It is imperative for the students to remember the 10 do’s and 10 don’ts of NIFT. According to the
exam pattern, the entrance test will be conducted in pen and paper mode in 32 cities across the
nation. NIFT entrance exam is a three-tier format exam which consists of the Creative Ability

Test (CAT), General Ability Test (GAT) and Situation Test.

Candidates seeking admission in B.Des programmes need to appear for both Creative Ability

Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT). However, students applying for BFTech course
admissions need to appear for the General Ability Test (GAT) exam only. Candidates who clear
the written test will be eligible to appear for the Situation Test.

Candidates will secure admission in any of 16 campuses of the National Institute of Fashion
Technology in various design programmes based on their performance in NIFT entrance exam.

D O’S FOR NIFT ENTRANCE EXAM
Following are the 10 Do’s for NIFT design entrance exam

● NIFT Brochure - Aspirants must always go through the brochure which is available in
the official website of NIFT (nift.ac.in) to comprehend the detailed NIFT exam pattern
and syllabus for both the courses.
● Understand the syllabus - Students must understand elements and basic principles of
design, like colour theory, typography, animation techniques, etc.

● Solve the sample papers - Students must solve the previous year NIFT question
papers and participate in the mock tests. Solving the sample paper will help the students
to understand the format of the questions asked in the entrance test and difficulty level of

it.
● Enhance your general awareness - Aspirants must work on their vocabulary, general
knowledge, and current affairs by reading newspapers, magazines, books on general
knowledge like Manorama, researching the internet or watching youtube videos related


to these topics.

Complete the syllabus - Students are advised to complete the NIFT syllabus. Try to
cover all the topics that are included in the syllabus.

● Admit card and identity proof - Candidates must carry the printout copy of NIFT admit
card along with a valid identity card to the exam centres. None of the candidates will be
allowed to enter the exam centres with the admit card.

● Prioritise sections - Plan your paper. First try to attempt the simple ones like logo
designing, T-Shirt designing, etc. and then go for the complicated ones like the scene

drawing, etc.
● Quality stationery - Candidates must try to use quality colour pencils which contain at
least 24 shades.

● Draw in one go - Test-takers must try to use less eraser while sketching. This will help
in representing your lines in a more distinct, bold and confident way.

● Reporting Time - Make sure to reach the centre at the reporting time mentioned in the
admit card. After ‘Gate closure’, the candidate will not be permitted under any
circumstances.

Following are the 10 don’ts for NIFT design entrance exam

● Do not take stress - Students should not strain themself till the last minute. For a few
days before the exam, leave all your books aside. Have a good time and relax.
● While studying do not set limits - Do not limit yourself to the topics, cover all the
important topics.
● Do not start preparing late for the exam - Students must not underestimate the

amount of practice and time required for the NIFT entrance exam. The best way to crack
the NIFT entrance exam with flying colors is by starting preparing for the entrance test as
soon as possible.

● Do not try to represent your creativity through texts - While representing your
creativity, remember you must not focus more on texts but on visuals.
● No electronic gadgets - Candidates must not carry any electronic gadgets such as
mobile phone phones, smartwatches, wallets, handbags, notes, books or any


fluid/marker to the exam centres.

Do not presume the answers - As there is 0.25 negative marking for every wrong/
incorrectly marked answer for GAT, candidates must not mark the answers if they are not

sure of it.
● Do not ignore the instructions - Test-takers must follow the exam guideline. They must
not carry the question booklet or any part thereof outside the test before completion of

the test.
● Do not forget to make your own arrangements - No travelling or accommodation/

food expenses will be paid to the candidates for attending the test. Hence they have to
arrange for their own.
● Do not mark multiple answers - Test-takers must not darken more than one oval in the

OMR sheet as such an answer will not be considered for evaluation and may cost you
your marks because of the negative marking.

● Do not mar the answer sheet - Students must not tear, bend or mutilate the answer
sheet.
