Parental Involvement: A Tool in Improving the Student's Academic Performance

of Grade 10 Ponce S .Y 2022-2023

For decades, researchers have pointed to one key success factor that
transcends nearly all others, such as socioeconomic status, student background or the
kind of school a student attends: parental involvement. The extent to which schools
nurture positive relationships with families and vice versa makes all the difference,
research shows. Students whose parents stay involved in school have better
attendance and behavior, get better grades, demonstrate better social skills and adapt
better to school. Parental involvement also more securely sets these students up to
develop a lifelong love of learning, which researchers say is key to long-term success.
Why is it important to involve parents in school? Children whose families are engaged in
their education are more likely to: earn higher grades and score higher on tests;
graduate from high school and college; develop self-confidence and motivation in the
classroom; and have better social skills and classroom behavior. Because it improves
classroom culture and conditions, parent involvement also benefits teachers. Knowing
more about a student helps teachers prepare better and knowing that they have
parents’ support ensures that teachers feel equipped to take academic risks and push
for students to learn more. Outside of the classroom, engaged parents more often see
themselves as advocates for their child’s school and are more likely to volunteer or take
an active role in governance. Researchers have noted that parent involvement in school
governance, for instance, helps parents understand educators’ and other parents’
motivations, attitudes, and abilities. It gives them a greater opportunity to serve as
resources for their children, often increasing their own skills and confidence. In a few
cases, these parents actually further their own education and upgrade their jobs. While
providing improved role models for their children, these parents also ensure that the
larger community views the school positively and supports it. They also provide role

Here in the Philippines where poverty is the high cost of education, and the lack
of awareness of the importance of education result in a lack of parental involvement in
education in the Philippines. Parental involvement is essential for the success of any
education system. It has been shown to improve student achievement, reduce truancy
and dropout rates, and improve the quality of education. The Philippine government has
recognized the importance of parental involvement and has taken steps to encourage it.
However, more needs to be done. The Department of Education (DepEd) needs to
educate parents more about how important education is for their children’s future. It also
needs to ensure that parents know the available resources to help their children
succeed in school. Parental involvement improves student achievement, self-esteem,
and behavior. It also helps to build strong relationships between parents and their
child’s school. The best way for parents to get involved in their children’s education is to
find an activity that they are interested in that fits their schedule. There is no one-size-
fits-all approach to parental involvement; what works for one family may not work for
another. The most important thing is that parents find an activity they are comfortable
with and feel benefits their child. By taking these steps, parents can ensure that their
child gets the most out of their education and has the best chance for success in life.

In Davao del Norte, particularly in Tagum City, a study by the student of St.
Mary’s College about the relationship between parental involvement and academic
motivation of grade 11 and 12 senior high school students states that Parents work out
students’ homework. Parents conduct tests to know the level of learning of their
children. The results further show that though parents are the ones that work out
students' homework, they still test the students’ level of understanding. Parents are
involved in the schoolwork of their youngsters. Parents agree that they have an
important role in homework. Homework help reports that it is particularly effective in
improving performance. Parental behavior supports this belief. 90% of parents say they
have reserved homework for themselves, and 85% say they are done. However, one of
the things that help children grow academically is good homework. It benefits children
because learning is not something that happens overnight. It takes effort, time, and
practice. When parents do their children’s homework, they strip them of the chance to
learn and grow. While ghostwriting that essay or putting together that project may help
