Narrative Final Report
Time period: 1st October to 31st December, 2019

Faiz Foundation Trust

28th November, 2019

1
I. Introduction
The 5th Faiz Festival titled Bol Zuban Ab Tak Teri Hai, organized in Lahore from November 15-
17, 2019, was dedicated to Baba Guru Nanak on his 550th birth anniversary. The festival was
designed to promote appreciation of cultural pluralism and diversity and an increased
understanding of Pakistan’s history and politics in audiences
of all age groups and socio-economic classes, through
exposure to local, regional and international cultural events,
publications, exhibitions and discussion forums. This
Narrative Final Report describes the festival activities, the
media strategy, partnerships, results achieved, and lessons
learnt for future festivals.

II. Festival Activities

Before the formal launch of the festival an exhibition titled
“Paper Jewels: Early Postcards from Pakistan”, a
collaboration between FFT and GCU, was inaugurated on
14th November at the Salam Hall, GCU, Lahore. The first
exhibition of postcards in Pakistan comprised the private collection of Omar Khan, and was
curated by F.S. Aijazuddin. It has been running daily from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 pm and will
continue till 29th November, 2019.

The festival was formally inaugurated on the

morning of 15th November with a session at
GCU entitled “Faiz aur Government College”
(Faiz and Government College), a collaborative
event of FFT and GCU. Speakers included
Chairperson FFT, Vice Chancellor GCU, and
Chairperson Urdu
Department and
Faculty Dean. A panel
discussion
moderated by Dr Ali
Hashmi included Basir Kazmi (United Kingdom), Dr Saadat Saeed (GCU, Lahore), Dr Zia ul
Hassan (Punjab University, Lahore), Dr Tariq Hashmi (GCU Faisalabad), Dr Sher Ali (Alhamd
University Islamabad), and Dr Imran Zafar (GC Jhang).

This was followed by the inauguration of two

exhibitions at the AlHamra Art Gallery on Guru
Nanak and Faiz. The exhibition on Guru Nanak
titled Aao Sach Jagaao Sach was organised in
collaboration with UNESCO, and included
collections from within and outside Pakistan.
Speakers included FFT Chairperson, Indian poet
Dr. Arvinder Chamak, Punjab Minister for
Information and Culture, and a number of British
scholars, including historian Bhiwender Singh, writer Bobby Singh Bansal, and poet and

2
novelist Ruth Padel. It was followed by a recitation of Guru Nanak's Aarti by Harsakhian, a
group of female eastern classical / folk singers. The exhibitions were curated by Professor
Nazish Ataullah, Salima Hashmi, Dr. Samina Iqbal and others. In the words of Dr. Arvinder
Chamak: “It’s a unique exhibition and a unique festival”.

Highlights of the evening were Ajoka’s play

“Saira Aur Maira” which paid tribute to the
human rights icon Asma Jahangir, and a musical
performance “Guloon mein rang bharay”
consisting of Faiz’s poetry rendered by famous
singer Ali Sethi. Both the events had packed
audiences, with many sitting on the auditorium
stairs. Unlike previous Faiz festivals, when the
inauguration day had a limited audience, this
time the grounds of the AlHamra Art Centre were filled with people, a sign that the festival
had truly begun in full swing.

The next two days of the festival 16th and 17th

November, ran from 11.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.
daily, with simultaneous sessions in the five
halls and the open area of the AlHamra Art
Centre, The Mall, Lahore. Indoor activities
included talks, panel discussions, book launches,
tributes, and performances (music, dance,
theatre, poetry recitation, and story-telling).

There were 35 panel discussions or conversations

related to literature, politics, media, music, art
and social issues like climate change and women
in sports. Well-known panelists included
politicians like former Chairman Senate Senator
Raza Rabbani and Senator Afrasiab Khattak,
ministers Asad Umar and Dr. Yasmin Rashid,
former ministers Nafisa Shah and Dr. Ayesha
Ghaus Pasha; literary figures like Zehra Nigah,
Amjad Islam Amjad, Mohammad Hanif, Asif
Farrukhi, and Dr. Taqi Abedi from Canada; film and television celebrities like Mahira Khan
and Ahsan Khan; musicologists and singers like Arshad Mehmud, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and
Martina Catella from France; TV hosts like Hamid Mir and Nasim Zehra; lawyers like Salman
Akram Raja and Rafay Alam; and Fareed Maharaj, the Khadim-e-Aala of Ajmer Sharif, India.

Some 11 books were launched during the festival, including 3 fiction and 8 non-fiction, on
topics related to literature, biography, history, politics, psychology, poetry, and film.
Tributes were also paid to some progressive literary figures like Fehmida Riaz, Altaf Fatima
and Khalida Hussain, the great music composer Khayyam, and the human rights icon Asma
Jahangir.

3
There were dance performances by over
150 students of Lahore Grammar School
based on Faiz’s poetry, a kathak
performance by American dancer Farah
Yasmeen, and a performance by
accomplished dancers Adnan Jahangir
and Samia Mumtaz.

Theatre performances included a classic

play based on the life of Indian poets
Amrita Preetam and Sahir Ludhianvi, a
performance by schoolchildren of
Sanjan Nagar, and two outdoor
performances, including Neel Kanth, a
tribute to the great Sindhi poet Sheikh
Ayaz by Laal Hartal, and street theatre
by AlHamra on Wheels on the evils of
dowry. Artists from National Academy of
Performing Arts (NAPA), Karachi
demonstrated their exquisite story-
telling skills through Dastaan Goi.

Music performances included a German

jazz band singing the Persian poetry of
Rumi and Hafiz; a classical piano
rendition by Karachi-based piano
prodigy Asad Anees; eastern classical
music by the Karachi-based Tarz
orchestra; the Laal Band presenting
Faiz’s revolutionary poetry; a sitar
performance by the accomplished
musician Farrukh Bashir; Noor Zehra
playing a unique instrument Shruti
Saagar, and a performance by student
singers of AlHamra Unplugged. Faiz’s
poetry and writings were recited by
famous actors Zia Mohyeddin and Adeel
Hashmi, both accompanied by music.

The large open areas of the AlHamra Art

Centre also witnessed a variety of
activities which engaged audiences of all
age groups throughout the two days.
They included activities for children (art,
story-telling, music), street theatre, and
a drum circle in which a large number of
people from all age groups participated. The children activities served a dual purpose, with

4
children having fun doing painting and drawing under supervision, and their older family
members getting the opportunity to attend sessions undisturbed. In addition a number of
youth groups were seen singing songs to the accompaniment of a guitar and drum. Some
youth and student groups also used the opportunity to express their political views using
revolutionary poetry and slogans. The
leadership of the labour movement in
Faisalabad also brought a large group of men,
women and children who expressed their
support for Faiz and his ideals. Visitors also

thronged the many book stalls offering

books at discounted prices, while there
was great rush at the food stalls
throughout the day.

In order to ensure the smooth organization

and management of the festival, the FFT
team maintained regular contact with session moderators, panelists, vendors, government
authorities, Alhamra staff, sponsors and partners, volunteers, before and during the festival.
It also closely monitored each festival session through its team of volunteers, and
supervisors engaged by the event management company, ensuring that all sessions started
and ended on time, and providing on the spot support where required (e.g. problems
related to sound system, lighting, multi-media, etc.). Because of these steps almost all
sessions started and ended on time, and there were no technical glitches during sessions.

III. Media Strategy

We used the same media strategy that we adopted in the previous festivals, with excellent
results in terms of audience turnout, including:

i. Disseminating flyers, video clips of previous festival sessions through social

media, including Facebook page, paid ads, and WhatsApp groups.

5
ii. Putting up video clips on our Facebook page of celebrities announcing their plans
to attend the festival and inviting viewers to join them
iii. Announcing events through Faiz Ghar calendar, sending to email lists
iv. Partnering with Geo TV network for dissemination of festival promos near and
during festival dates through print and electronic media
v. Designing, printing and disseminating invitation cards of special events to FFT
members, patrons, supporters, partners and government authorities
vi. Putting up hoardings, banners, streamers, posters, standees, on key locations
near and during festival dates, including main roads, crossings, educational
institutions, major hotels, etc.

All media materials carried logos of partners and sponsors, including FOSIP. The same can
be seen in a selection of festival flyers in Annexure A.

There was extensive coverage of the festival by print, electronic and social media, including
pre-festival information, live coverage, livestreaming on social media, event reports
published on the same or subsequent day, and reviews. Most TV channels and a large
number of web-based TV channels and vbloggers ran reports of the festival, while reviews
of the festival, including specific sessions, were published in print and social media (details
in Annexure B). The Daily Dawn Lahore edition carried more than one report on each day of
the festival, including the events in GCU. Many reports included interviews of a wide range
of audience members, including men and women from different parts of the country and
abroad (USA, UK, Canada, India, Germany, etc.), who had come primarily to attend the
festival. The audience response was overwhelmingly positive.

A number of sessions were livestreamed by channels. Events held in the two large halls
were livestreamed by FFT and viewed on its Facebook page by more than a hundred
thousand people across the world. Some sessions which got high views included (full details
given in Annexure C):

 Stardom with Responsibility: Mahira Khan (47k views)

 An Evening of Poetry and Piano (23k views)
 Pakistan: The Way Forward – panel with Pakistani politicians (14.5k views)
 An Evening with Ali Sethi – singing performance (12k views)
 Siasi Pabandion ke Daur Mein Azad Sahafat (Independent poetry in the times of
political restrictions) (8.5k views)
 Mein tenu fair milangi: Nimra Bucha & Sarmad Khoosat theatre performance (6.1k

 Shairey Key Asnaf (Types of Poetry) (5.1k views)

IV. Achievements

The following indicators were used to measure progress:

i. Amount of funds raised for the festival, and the number of supporters
ii. Number of panelists participating, and the variety of topics
iii. Number of artists performing, and the variety of performances

6
iv. Number of persons attending the festival, and its diversity in terms of
gender, age, ethnicity, culture, religion/sect, location of home town /
country, etc.

The achievements against targets are given in Tables 1 and 2.

Table 1: Achievements against Deliverables

Almost all the festival targets were achieved, while targets related to panel discussions were
over-achieved. More than 500,000 have seen festival events through livestreaming and web
posts. Since many people did not fill the registration forms at the reception desk, and many
people attended on more than one day, it is not possible to calculate the exact number of
people who attended the festival. While the halls were not full in a few sessions, there were
people sitting on floors and stairs in most sessions. We arrived at an estimated figure of
27,000 using the following calculations:

7
Table 3: Audience Estimates

GCU (Bukhari Auditorium) 1000 1 1000

Total 6050 69 27170

There were people from across Pakistan, as well as

abroad, some travelling as much as two days to reach
the festival, at their own expense. The number of youth,
more boys than girls, easily outnumbered all other
categories of visitors to the festival. At the same time
there were huge numbers of families, including those
with children, attending. In fact many families hung
around near the food court and book stalls as late as
11.00 pm, two hours after the close of all festival events.
This was despite Lahore being declared as the city with
the second most polluted air in the world after New
Delhi, with the air quality around the AlHamra Centre
falling in the hazardous category. The number of
motorbikes parked at the AlHamra Centre entrance
(picture on left) is a good indicator of the diversity and size of the audience.

V. Partners

We were fortunate to be able to collaborate with a large number of partners without whose
support it would have been far more difficult to organize such a large event according to the
quality standards which have become a hallmark of FFT events. Our partners included:

i. Lahore Arts Council – providing all the facilities available at the Alhamra Arts
Centre, including auditorium, halls, galleries, open spaces, wash rooms, cafeteria,
parking, etc.
ii. Our major sponsor, i.e. FOSIP, and corporate sponsors, including Coca Cola,
Jubilee Insurance, Kinetic, Naturelle, Luxus Grand Hotel; and SPO
iii. Alhamra Academy of Performing Arts – music and theatre performances
iv. Government College University, Lahore – co-hosting session/exhibition
v. Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) – providing conference bags and lunches
to delegates, and hosting a tour of the walled city
vi. British Council – sponsoring British author
vii. UNESCO – sponsoring the Baba Guru Nanak exhibition
viii. Habib University, Karachi – sponsoring music performance of Tarz group

8
ix. Geo Television Network – electronic and print media promotion
x. Lahore Grammar School – children’s dance performances
xi. The Little Art – art activities for children
xii. German Jazz Group
xiii. Parks and Horticulture Authority / DHA – for free spaces to put up banners and
streamers

VI. Lessons Learnt

As we reflected on the reasons for the growing audience and its increasing diversity, we
realized that in its fifth year the festival has become an event where friends and family
members from across Pakistan get an opportunity to meet, hang out, and meet hundreds of
acquaintances from other parts of the country. In addition Lahorites also get an opportunity
to meet so many people from Lahore and outside. The quality and content of the sessions
and performances, the opportunity to meet celebrities from various fields, the sessions
starting and closing on time, the excellent ambience of the AlHamra Art Centre, including
the sprawling lawns, food court and book stalls, and recordings of Faiz’s poetry sung by
diverse singers, all have contributed to building a reputation of a high quality and culturally
rich festival.

Since this was our fifth festival with the same

management team, and a number of
experienced and trained volunteers, we
managed to ensure that the festival functioned
smoothly, despite 7-8 events running
simultaneously for two days. A major challenge
was many members, mostly youth, wanting to
get into a hall at the same time, thereby
blocking the entrance, and making it difficult for
the audience of the previous event from getting
out (see picture on left). This meant that
people were entering the halls when the event had started, which at times disturbed the
audience arriving earlier. A common complaint was not being able to attend an event
because of lack of space or access. This was despite the fact that in most events people
were sitting on the floor or on the stairs. Thus the audience attending each event was far
greater than the actual capacity of the halls. We will need to consider how this issue can be
managed better in the next festival.

We would also like to improve the registration of visitors in the next edition of the festival,
so that we have a better sense of the number and type of people participating in the
festival, and being able to analyse the data in terms of gender and geographical location.
This would give us a better sense of the size as well as the diversity of the festival. We are
also exploring the idea of advance online registration for various festival sessions / events.
