The opera was first produced in Vienna, at the Theater
auf der Wieden, on 30th September, 1791. Das
Labyrinth, an opera by Winter, is a sequel to it, and
Goethe also left an unfinished libretto which
intended as a sequel.
The dialogue has been omitted on this otherwise
complete London ffrr recording. To enable listeners
to follow the story of the opera it has, however, been
summarized in this libretto, and to distinguish these
passages from what actually appears on the records,
they have been printed in smaller type.
