Cambridge English: Starters

Exam practice
This section covers all parts of the Starters exam (2018 update). It consists of Preparation,
which provides controlled practice to prepare for the task types found in the Starters exam.
The Practice tasks then give students a taster of Starters-style tasks.
These tasks can mostly be done as self-study, at home or in school. For tasks with an audio
icon, the student or their parents will need to be able to use a computer to download and
play the audio. A few speaking tasks require a partner.

Exam overview
There are three papers in the Starters exam: Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking.
Listening
The Listening paper has four parts, 20 items and is approximately 20 minutes. All tasks are
heard twice. Each part begins with one or two examples. The tasks include writing numbers
or names, multiple choice, and carrying out instructions by colouring pictures.
Reading and Writing
The Reading and Writing paper has five parts, 25 items and is 20 minutes. Each part
begins with one or two examples. Correct spelling is required. The tasks include
yes / no and gap-fill.
Speaking
The Speaking paper has four parts and is 3–5 minutes. In Part 1, the candidate must point
to the correct parts of a picture in response to spoken instructions. Candidates must then
point to object cards and place them on the picture. In Part 2, the candidate responds to
examiner questions about the picture. In Part 3, they respond to questions about the object
cards. Finally, in Part 4, the candidate responds to personal questions from the examiner.

How the examiner assesses the speaking test

The examiner evaluates three aspects of speaking skills:
1 Interactive listening ability – how well the student understands the instructions and questions.
2 Production of words and phrases – whether the student has enough language to answer the
questions appropriately.
3 Pronunciation – whether the examiner is able to understand the student’s answers.
