Horizontal Directional Drilling by Brexol Group

Brexol Group is well-positioned to provide valuable

assistance with Horizontal Directional Drilling
(HDD) services in Northeast India and beyond.
With its expertise and advanced drilling technology,
the company can contribute significantly to the
efficient and effective execution of HDD projects in
the country.

Brexol Group offers comprehensive services, including site assessment,

project planning, engineering design, and skilled manpower for HDD
operations. By leveraging their vast experience and state-of-the-art
equipment, they can successfully navigate the complexities
associated with underground drilling and deliver high-quality results
General Methodology 1
Project Planning and Design: The first step in HDD is meticulous project planning and design.
This involves surveying the site to identify potential obstacles, determining the desired path and
depth of the drill, and evaluating the soil conditions. By carefully analyzing these factors,
engineers can develop a comprehensive drilling plan that ensures the successful completion of
the project.

Pilot Hole Drilling: Once the planning phase is complete, the pilot hole drilling commences. A
small-diameter pilot hole is drilled along the desired path using a specialized drilling rig. This rig
consists of a drill bit attached to the end of a drilling pipe. The pilot hole is steered and
monitored using guidance systems such as gyroscopic or electromagnetic tools. The drilling
process continues until the pilot hole reaches the exit point.

Pre-Reaming: After the pilot hole is drilled, it is enlarged in a series of steps through pre-reaming.
This involves attaching progressively larger cutting tools known as reamers to the drill string. The
reamers scrape away the soil, increasing the diameter of the hole to accommodate the desired
pipeline or conduit.
General Methodology 2
Pullback: Once the pre-reaming is completed, the next step is the pullback. The pullback process
involves removing the reamers and attaching a pulling head or swivel to the drill string. The
pipeline or conduit, fused together in sections on the surface, is then attached to the pulling
head. Using a combination of the drilling rig's rotational force and a pulling unit, the pipeline is
gradually pulled back through the enlarged hole.

Backfilling and Restoration: After the pipeline or conduit is successfully pulled back, the final step
involves backfilling and restoration. The drill hole is backfilled with a suitable material, such as
drilling mud or bentonite, to provide stability and support for the newly installed pipeline. Any
surface disturbances caused during the drilling process are restored to their original condition,
ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Utility Installations: One of the primary applications of HDD is the installation of utilities such as water, gas, and

telecommunications pipelines. HDD enables the installation of these vital infrastructures under roads, rivers, and other
obstacles without the need for disruptive open-cut methods. This method minimizes traffic disruptions, reduces
environmental impact, and enhances the overall efficiency of utility installations.

Environmental Crossings: Horizontal Directional Drilling is commonly employed for environmental crossings,
where pipelines or conduits need to be installed beneath sensitive areas like wetlands, wildlife habitats, or
environmentally protected regions. By employing HDD, project developers can ensure minimal disturbance to
these areas, maintaining ecological balance and complying with environmental regulations.

River and Waterway Crossings: Traditional methods of installing pipelines across rivers and waterways involve
trenching or creating dams, which can be costly and environmentally damaging. HDD offers a more efficient
and environmentally friendly alternative by drilling beneath the riverbeds and water bodies, avoiding
disruptions to the water flow and preserving the aquatic ecosystem
EQUIPMENT USED
Urban and Built-up Areas: In densely populated urban areas, HDD proves to be invaluable for installing utility lines
without disrupting the existing infrastructure. This method allows for the installation of pipelines, fiber optic cables, and
other utilities under roads, buildings, and other structures, minimizing the need for excavation and reducing
inconveniences to residents and businesses.

Crossings through Challenging Terrains: HDD technology has proven its worth in challenging terrains like
mountainous regions, rocky landscapes, and areas with complex geological formations. By steering the drill bit
through these challenging conditions, HDD enables the installation of infrastructure in otherwise inaccessible
areas, facilitating the development of remote regions.

Rehabilitation and Replacement Projects: Horizontal Directional Drilling also finds application in the rehabilitation
and replacement of aging or damaged infrastructure. For instance, it can be utilized for the installation of new
pipelines within the existing ones or for replacing corroded or compromised sections of pipelines without
extensive excavation. This reduces costs, minimizes disruptions, and extends the lifespan of the infrastructure.
