DIMENSIONS OF PHILIPPINE LITERARY HISTORY
Geography- the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments
Language- a system of conventional spoken, manual (signed), or written symbols by which individuals express
themselves.
Ethnicity- a notion that refers to social entities sharing real or putative ascriptive features like a common origin
or cultural-linguistic legacy which assumedly command special collective commitment, as well as their
retention and transmission.

Activity 1. Explore the Epic! Directions: Identify the geographic, linguistic and ethnic dimensions of a literary
piece and fill out the table below. Read the epic below and note the three different dimensions. Write your
answer in a separate sheet.
Example:
BANTUGAN
The Kingdom of Bumbaran were ruled by King Madali whose younger brother is Prince Bantugan. Prince
Bantugan was known for being brave and handsome, so many maidens are attracted to him. Because of this,
King Madali was envy to his younger brother so he commanded that no one will talk to Prince Bantugan and if
anyone does will be given a punishment. Prince Bantugan got ill and died in the door of the Kingdom-Between-
Two-Seas that was ruled by a good king and the beautiful princess Datimbang, his sister. The king and
princess of the kingdom were shocked when they saw the corpse of a stranger. The parrot told that it was their
master Prince Bantugan after they knew that it was him they told it to King Madali. They brought the body of
Prince Bantugan into the Kingdom of Bumbaran. King Madali seeing the body of his brother, blaming himself
for the death of Prince Bantugan. Even though his heart is full of envy to his brother he loved him so much, so
he decided to get the soul of his brother from the angel of death. After he got the soul of his brother, King
Madali reached their kingdom then he transferred the soul of Prince Bantugan back to his body then the prince
was alive as if just awakened from a deep sleep. King Madali and the kingdom celebrated the return of their
prince. Meanwhile,the news came to King Miskoyaw that his brother died. The men of King Miskoyaw attack
the Kingdom Of Bumbaran but Prince Bantugan defeated them all and saved the kingdom. The Kingdom Of
Bumbaran discontinued the celebration then King Madali lost his envy to his younger brother. Later Prince
Bantugan married Princess Datimbang and lived happily for long years.
