In the fall, when we see bunches of geese flying south, forming a huge “V” in the sky, we
wonder what science already knows about why they fly this way. What we already know is
that when each bird flaps its wings, it moves the air upwards, helping to sustain the bird
which is immediately behind. Flying on a “V” shape, the bunch of geese gets at least
71%of more power to fly than a bird which flies alone.

Whenever a goose gets away from the bunch, it promptly feels the effort and necessary
resistance to keep flying on its own. It quickly gets back to the bunch and the “V” shaped
way to fly, so that it can take advantage on the easiness to fly together.

When the “Leader goose” gets tired, it changes its position and another goose immediately
takes its leading position in the front.

The geese at the back keep quacking all the time, to encourage the ones that are leading the
bunch in the front.

Last but not least, when a goose gets sick or shot, two other geese get away from the “V”
shaped line and get together with the sick goose to help it, until it can fly again or until it
dies.
