LOST IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS
6|Page
Fifty-four-year-old scientist Bob Rigsby was lost five days in Canada’s Rocky Mountains, and was
only rescued after a mobile phone call to his wife, Shirley, over 8.000km away in England.

Bob, a British wildlife expert, had been in Vancouver, Canada, giving a talk at a conference on the
environment. When it was over, he traveled to Rocky Mountains and checked into The Maple Leaf
hotel. He then set off on a short walk to look at the local plant and animal life. After a couple of hours,
he realised he had taken a wrong turning on the mountain path, but was sure he could easily get back
to the hotel. Even when night fell, he remained confident.

But, after walking for several hours the next day, it became clear to Bob that he was in trouble. ‘I had
my mobile phone with me, but the battery was almost dead. I thought I could probably make just one
call but I didn’t know the number of my hotel and I didn’t want to worry my family unless I really had
to.’ Bob carried on walking for three more days. He knew which wild plants he could safely eat and he
had little trouble finding them. When he was thirsty he drank from streams.

On the fourth day he reached a forest that he knew he had walked through the previous day. His heart
sank. He realised it was hopeless and decided to call his family in England. ‘He was quite calm when
he spoke to me on the phone,’ says Shirley. ‘He appeared to be in control of the situation, in spite of
everything. He had been lost a few times before, but never for so many days – that’s why this time was
so different.’ She immediately contacted the Mapble Leaf hotel, after a quick call to Canadian embassy
in London to get its phone number. ‘We’re always anxious if our guests are away for a long time,’
Says Greg McCaffrey, the hotel’s owner. ‘But that week several of our English visitors had gone to the
city for a few days to watch the hockey games, and we thought Mr. Rigsby had gone too.’ As soon as
Shirley phoned, hotel staff called the rescue service, who sent out a search party for the scientist. They
found him in a cave some hours later, very tired, but apart from some cuts and scratches, quite unhurt.

‘I’ve learned my lesson,’says Bob. “I admit I was stupid to set off like that without a guide. I never
want an experience like that again.

PART 4: You are going to read four people’s reviews of the book “Who elected the Bankers” by
Louis Pauly. For questions 1 to 5, choose from the people A-D. The people may be chosen more
than one. (1.5pts)
A: JANE MORRISON

7|Page
Louis Pauly obviously wanted to startle people when he set out to write the story of the International
Monetary Fund, a group that he believes is credited with wielding far more power than it really has. In
a discussion of the failing of the Leage of Nations, Pauly details how industrialized nations moved to
create the IMF in the midst of World War II in a belief that an organization that balances international
monetary policy would help prevent future wars. He shows how the IMF has become intertwined with
the political foundations of today’s global economy.
B: INGRID BRYAN
As a staff member of the IMF, Pauly is in a unique position to give a fresh perspective. He trades the
development of the IMF from its roots in the Leage of Nations and gives an excellent account of how
it redefined its role after the demise of fixed exchange rates in the 1970s.
C: JACQUE DE LAROSI
Pauly has, with remarkable clarity, described the evolution of the international markets over the past
fifty years. He skillfully describes the evolution of international monetary cooperation from the Leage
of Nations in the early 1920s to the International Monetary Fund in the 1990s, stressing the
continuities and changes over the past seventy- five years old. Who Elected the Bankers is, in my
view, one of the first attempts to show how the global markets of to day have been shaped by central
banks, the IMF, the G-7, and the policymakers of the world.
D: ERIC HELLEINER
This very interesting and readable book examines the relationship between global finance, democracy
and internatioal institutions in the context of OECD countries. Its arguments are important and
innovative not just for those studying political economy of global finance, a field which Pauly has
been leading figure over the last decade. They are also highly significant to everyone interested in
broader debates about globalisation and the future democracy in advanced industrial states. Who
Elected the Bankers? Will be seen by all as a very welcome and major contribution to debates on the
political economy of global finance, the history of International financial policy making and analysis
of the relationship between politics and globalisation. It deserves a wide audience.

Which person:
1. thinks the book should be read by many people? D
2. mentions an event in particular decade? B
3. thinks the author wanted to surprise people? A
4. says the book was pleasant to read?D
5. mentions what has influenced today’s global markets? C
Your answers:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
