 FBtools

Introduction
FBTools is an utility software used to perform Firmware Download on any Smar Fieldbus
equipment:

• PCI cards
• Field Devices
• Fieldbus Modules

This allows the user to upgrade the firmware (executable program installed in the FLASH
memory) of the equipment using the latest versions provided in SMAR Web Site:
www.smar.com

The firmware can be downloaded while the equipment is installed and turned on. It is not
necessary to turn off or remove the equipment before downloading the firmware.

EQUIPMENT OPERATING SYSTEM NOTES

PCI Windows NT 4.0
Field Devices Windows NT 4.0, 95 or 98 Requires FDI302 (Firmware Download Interface)
Fieldbus Module Windows NT 4.0, 95 or 98 Requires C232-700 cable

Before You Begin

• Please certify that FBTools was correctly installed using Smar FBTools setup disks.

• New firmwares can be incompatible with old Fieldbus systems, and vice versa. Please
contact Smar Technical Support if you are not sure about the compatibility with your
current Fieldbus system (Syscon, PCI, LC700, Field Devices, FB700, etc.)

Warning
• Part of the fieldbus equipment functionality WILL STOP (Function Blocks execution,
links, supervision, scheduling, Fieldbus communication, etc.) while its firmware is being
downloaded.

• Before proceeding to the next step, CERTIFY THAT YOUR PROCESS WILL BE
STABLE under any condition described in this procedure.

How to Download a Firmware

1. Run FBTools Wizard.exe, choose a device, and then click the Finish button.

2. Depending on the chosen device (PCI Card, Field Device or Fieldbus Module), follow
the specific steps.

PCI Cards

• PCI V1.1, V1.11

• PCI V1.2, V1.21

1. Choose a card.

2. Select and open a PCIxxyyy.ABS file (where xx is the PCI card version – e.g. 11, and
yyy is the protocol – e.g. FF).

3. Click the Download button to start the firmware download.

Notes:

• FBTools uses the PCI settings (I/O Port and Interrupt) configured with the ItfSetup.exe
application.

• FBTools identifies installed cards as UNKNOWN if the PCI hardware version is not
valid or supported. This may be caused by I/O conflicts between PCI and other cards
on the PC bus. If you experience this problem, change the PCI I/O Port to a free
address range, using ItfSetup.exe.

Field Devices

1. Choose a serial port.

2. Connect the FDI302 (Firmware Download Interface) to the PC serial port chosen in
item 1.

3. Select and open a <name>.ABS file (where <name> is the Field Device name - e.g.
LD302).

4. Click the Download button to start the firmware download.

5. Disconnect the FDI302.

6. Reset the Field Device.

Notes:

1. Certify that no other application or resident program in the PC is using the I/O port or
IRQ of the selected serial port.
2. After resetting, the Field Device will automatically execute a factory initialization
procedure (Fact Init appears on the display), if necessary.

Fieldbus Modules

• FB700

1. Choose a serial port.

2. Connect the C232-700 cable to the FB700 and the PC serial port chosen in item 1.
3. Press FB700 RESET button to force download mode. The RED led will turn on.
4. Select and open the file FB700.ABS.
5. Click on Download button to start the firmware download.
6. Disconnect the C232-700 cable.
7. Press RESET button again to reset the FB700. The RED led will turn off.

Notes:

1. Certify that no other application or resident program in the PC is using the I/O port or
IRQ of the selected serial port.

2. After resetting, the FB700 will automatically execute a factory initialization procedure
(yellow led will turn on), if necessary.
