yoga is a state of consciousness and it is a state of consciousness which we attempt to reach

in our evolutionary journey through 8,400,000 forms on earth it's a long journey isn't it
much longer than we think the fact that we're sitting here in human bodies means that we
have been on this journey for millions of years starting out with the first spark of life the
single-celled amoeba and working our way through viruses bacterias up into various forms
of sea marine life into the amphibious
through the amphibians into the mammals of reptile is a long long journey through
incarnations on earth from that little spark of consciousness which ignites the amoeba up to
the incredible human form is a long long journey the journey what is that journey it's
encoded in our DNA and whether we want to or not we have to make it we may not want to
make that evolutionary journey we may prefer to get stuck in a slug body or a snail that
might be comfortable it might be comfortable to be a sloth that might be comfortable to be
a little fish swimming in the ocean but life will not allow us to standstill we must constantly
change the form now what is that journey as the beautiful mantra from the vedas says

asto ma sadgamaya
from untruth to truth
tamasoma jyoteregamaya
from darkness to light
mederma amritungermeyer

from death to immortality

as a part of that evolutionary journey and a very important part of it is dying is death we're
born and we die we don't have any control over that but as
rumi the great persian sufi actually turkey's free version sufi said

i died as a mineral to become a plant i died as a plan to become an animal i died as an

animal to become a man i died as a man to become an angel and i died as an angel to
become a god when was i ever the less by dying so this is a very important part of our
journey and

i chanted also incapsules basic principles of classicalyoga in the sense that it pays tributeto
the guru and without the guru there is no classical yoga that's it now a days people think
that the guru is an acronym it’s no longer necessary but in our classical tradition it was the
guru who carried the light from generation to generation it was the guru who took the
student from darkness to light and it was the guru who took the student from death to
immortality so these are the basic concepts of classical yoga on that sucks there is an ol
motivating force for this classical science outside of this beautiful mantra proclamation the
maha kavya boom taught thought i seek that ultimate reality and this is their motivation this
is the moving force of this long journey were all on whether we know it or not our genes
know it our DNA knows it we have only one purpose in these embodied forms and that is to
experience that ultimate reality which the rishis called sought a beautiful word that which is
that which always was and that which will be eternal sat chitananda reality consciousness
and themost important of all anandam lives are you look at view of human existence and in
fact all existence on earth is tha tthe ultimate destiny of every embodied journey is ananda
anandam is not a place it's a state of consciousness which we eventually will reach yoga's
are veryoptimistic science it takes the viewthat every single soul every single divawill
eventually attain that goal satchit ananda now the only difference isthat in our piranhas in
our sacredscriptures especially the garuda puranadeals with the subject very beautifullyit
says that every diva every soul everybeam must embody in 84 relax ofincarnations alack is
100,000 so thereis eight million four hundred every soulhas to go through in its
evolutionaryjourney21 lacks and bodies that are born fromseed 24 lacks and bodies born
from sweat24 bodies born from egg and 24 body isborn from the womb 2421 lacks
bodiesborn from the womb that's so manyincarnations so many lifetimes we haveto go
through most of these lifetimesare unconscious we're simply propelledby a divine energy
were propelled by ourdna were propelled by this cosmic forcewho's engaged in its leela
engaged inits maya but there comes a stage in thislong journey and it is a long
journeywhere we finally reach the humanincarnation and no matter how terriblewe are as
human beings the very factthat we've obtained a human body meanswe've come very very
long long way andwe have succeeded the human body is theonly body on earth capable
ofmanifesting manas or consciousnessawarenessand it is the an attainment it is a
giftmahatma gandhi's wife cus to irvine wasill and the british doctors wanted herto take
beef broth to get some strengthand being a devout hindu she could noteat the meat of a
trowel and they triedto press her to take it that she feltthat by doing that she would commit
agreat sin and she said a very beautifulthing she said i consider it a privilegeto be born a
human and i will do nothingto jeopardize my status and this iswhere yoga starts this is the
startingpoint of yoga when we realize thepreciousness of our human incarnation werealize
the value of consciousness whenwe wait up from the long long sleep ofunconscious
incarnation into aconsciousness that there is a higherpurpose in life and we are destined
toattain that state as the reeses sayarise awake and stop not till the goalis reached again
this metaphor of thejourney wake up keep going and don'tstop till you get therenow when
we wake up just like magic weall love magic just like magic thesewonderful science this
wonderful pathwith this wonderful accumulation ofknowledge somehow comes to us if
theycome in so many ways that they comethrough a friend that they come througha book
that they come through anexperience may come through a strangerwe wake up to the idea
the fact that weare not alone we are not alone therehave been thousands if not hundreds
ofthousands of souls who have gone thisway before they have understood thejourney they
have understood the paththey have found the way they have shownlight the light of
consciousness intothe darkness of the unconscious and theyhave been benevolent enough
to share thefruits of their wisdom with us and thatwisdom body that knowledge body
whichhas accumulated to at least tenthousands of years if not hundreds ofthousands of
years has come to us and isencapsulated in this two syllablesanskrit word called yogawhat
an incredible treasure isencapsulated into little sounds yo layoga this great science which
hasaccumulated to the scientificexperiences and they are scientificthey've been recorded
there's beenexperimentations there has been anaccumulation of data there has been
avocabulary which is developed they havebeen techniques they have been
variousexperiments and practices which havegrown up through the generations andthat
great body of wisdom knowledge hascome to us in the form of yoga inancient days this
knowledge was more orlessembodied in the word veda this wonderfulknowledge was
available to the vedicseers and different forms more throughmantra giuliana's tuomas to
tapasya andas the time wheel of time turned theseconcepts came into the opana shouts
thepuranas the it he hustles the variousscriptural lore of this country variousgurus
developed around which this bodyof knowledge was preserved and passed tostudents
techniques developed there camea time particularly in the tantric erasin the time of the
attara van vader inthe time of the ton tricks thattechnique started to accumulate thesegreat
men realized if they held theirbody in a certain way that certainchanges could occur in
theirconsciousness if they engaged in certainpatterns of breath that these patternsof
breaths would affect energy currentsand flows of that cosmic power calledprana they
discovered that if theychanted certain songs or if they performcertain rituals that there was
an effectunconsciousness that true certaintechniques they could in fact acceleraterefine and
direct their own evolutionand this great body of knowledge becameknown as the science of
evolutionconscious evolution where we wake upfrom this unconscious propulsion
throughso many life forms and in effect takecontrol of our own destiny and insteadof going
through thousands of humanbodies and a sort of hit and missfashion we start to realize
there iscause effect in the universe there is akarmic law there is a way of life thereare
certain things we should do oncertain things we should not do if wewish to grow spiritually
and all ofthese practices came together as thiswhole science and art of yoga started totake
form coming through the many yearsthe also knows pranayamas mojo's bundyscleansing
techniques the scripturalinjunctions the different meditativedevices the different ways of
trainingthe mind started to accumulate as thevarious species experimented if i dothis this
happens if i do that thathappens and all this knowledge came intoa codified form very
recently in time inthe yoga sutras of patanjali for thefirst time we see the codification ofthis
great wisdom body of knowledgeabout 2,500 2,800 years ago when in 195short terse lions
the wonderfulmaharishi patanjaligave us eight words to live by eightwords and the whole
life plan is laidout for us as clear as a bell the wholejourney suddenly becomes focused
thisall beyond during that we've been doingfor tens of thousands of lifetime'ssuddenly
becomes a focused straight pathwith the advent of patanjali ismarvelous yoga sutras and
what did thegreat sage sing he said there eightwords to live by yama niyama
asanapranayama pratyahara dharana dion andthe goal of it all the goal of ourjourney the
arrival the sat chit anandapoint in our evolution he called samadhiand also kaivalya many
words are usedfor that final exterior the finalexperience moksha freedom freedom fromthis
long long journey arrival at thedestination arrival to that great cosmicconsciousnessyama
niyama asana pranayama pratyaharadharna d on somebody what a clear visionof our town
yama restraining the animalnature allowing consciousness todominate the unconscious
training theconscious mind strengthening itreinforcing its power jus yama and mellaman so
that the consciousness takeshold of the old unconsciousness learningto sit still curbing the
animalrestlessness curving the desire towander keeping the body in one placesteer amok
amok sanam holding the bodyasana pranayama controlling the pranicflows controlling the
energy that weneed and we need a tremendous energy tomake that final deep into
consciousnessinto cosmic consciousness praharadetaching rising above evolving beyondthe
need for sensory stimulus dharnacatching hold of this wandering mindchitta vritti nerodia
stopping the worldrules of the mind krishna told arjunathousands of years ago actually
arejenna was complaining to his cousinkrishna said kristen my mind is the mindis turbulent
strong and restless asdifficult to curb as the wind when wecome to darna this is what we
come faceto face with the human predicament themind is turbulent restless strongwillful
difficult to curb is the windand krishna replies so beautifullythrough our biasa to the
sustainedpractice and vairagya detachment argenalyou can succeed in controlling that
mindchitta vritti naroda darner this iswhere we enter into that realm where wetry to do that
when we are able tosucceed to some extent will start toslip into another state of
consciousnesswhich is the beginning of dion we cannotforce beyond we cannot practice
down wehave to like a ripe fruit which is readyto fall from the tree we have to preparethe
mind-body emotions until that theon-state comes of its own accord and ifwe can maintain if
we can maintain thatstate long enough then that finalemancipation the end of the journey
thelightthe scene of the light experiencing ofthat light the experience of
cosmicconsciousness that experience of anundermanned and ammachi tanunda willdawn
upon us and then we become free8,400,000 bodies and we come to thatlast one and then
we leave that body ina spirit of great joy the yoga sciencehelps us especially in the later
statesof that journey to go faster to go moreskillfully to avoid falling and holes toavoid
falling off cliffs to avoid otherdangers and to keep ourselves on thatstraight down and this is
a generaloverview of the concept of classicalyoga the science of conscious evolutionthe art
of living skillfully as swamijiour great guru yoga maharishi dr. Sarmakeaton and aguirre used
to tell us theordinary man is the lives to learn andthe yogi has learned to live and it isthe
science of yoga which shows us howto live skillfully yoga karma sukoshionam yoga is skill in
actionnow what path we follow there are manymany parampariya is there are
manytraditions and each tradition will haveits own legitimacy some traditions willfollow a
path a very heavy emphasis onarsenal like the iyengar tradition someother traditions will
emphasize more ofguru bhakta or bark tea some willemphasize karma yoga there are many
manytraditions depending on the guru onefollows but eventually all of thesetraditions again
lead to the same goalto moksha to somebody to freedom fromthis long long journeyso
using the limited time available tome i think we're coming to the end ofour sessions
allotment i've tried togive you an overview of the the realreason the real motivation behind
allyoga practices now people may come toyoga for different reasons they maythink they're
coming because they wantto lose weight they may think they'recoming to regain their
health they maythink they're coming to get an acrobaticbody or they may think
they'repracticing yoga like many of the kidsover at the yoga in a competition to winsome
prizes to win trustees to gainsayman named but basically everyone isdoing it for the same
reason and that isthat striving to obtain that higheststate of consciousness and eventuallyall
will reach that state one of myfavorite statements from gautama buddhaand buddha was a
yogi he was a hindusome people forget that he was a hinduprince who achieved the high
states ofconsciousness jesus christ was a greatyogi to some extent mohammed was also
ayogi they've been so many yogi'semerging throughout the thousands ofyears of human
history the buddha wasone of the great yogi's and it is saidthat one day buddha was being
carried ina peloquin to the streets of a city andhe looked out the window of histelephone
and he saw a bigger a dirtypathetic disease beggar sitting on theroadside and the buddha
said to thatbigger with a great compassion was greatkaruna what thou art i once wasand
what i am thou shalt be this is thepromise of yoga that every single wormevery single
mosquito every single virusevery single bacterium every single fishin the sea every single
tiger in thejungle every single dockwise everysingle criminal every single pervert theworst
specimens of humanity every singlecreature will eventually reach thatglorious golden ghoul
called mokshasamadhi kaval gotham the destination ofthe yogic journey is freedom
thebeginning of the journey is bondagebondage in the unconsciousness and thefinal
destination is freedom inconsciousness cosmic freedom cosmicconsciousness unlimited a
consciousnessthat always was is and always shall bebut most important of all
aconsciousness that is permeated throughand through with ultimate bliss undonedhiman
under sat chit anandaso i've given you a lot of words theyoga's not words but the words
