A long time ago, there was a giant dragon. His
name was Baruklinting. One day, one of the gods
asked him to take nine shepherds as an offering
for the gods.
Then Baruklinting went to a mountain. He
opened his big mouth every day. He hoped that
shepherds would enter his big mouth. In the
village, ten shepherds took their cows to the grass
field on the mountain. They didn't know there was
a dragon. One of the shepherds was very skinny
and dirty. His friends always made fun of him.
The skinny shepherd never got angry. He just kept
quiet and left his friends every time they laughed
at him.
One day, suddenly the sky became dark.
There were a thunder and lightning. Heavy rain
began to fall. The shepherds did not want to get
wet. They had to find a better place. They finally
found a big cave. The cave had sharp rocks inside
it. All shepherds did not know that the cave was
actually the mouth of the giant dragon. Yes, it was
Baruklinting's mouth!
When all shepherds were inside the 'cave',
sud- denly one of them pushed the skinny
shepherd away. Right after the skinny shepherd
was outside the cave, it suddenly closed! Yes,
Baruklinting just finished his job to get nine
shepherds for the gods.
When the skinny shepherds saw the cave
closed, he ran away! He ran as fast as he could.
He then told the villagers about the cave and the
dragon. The villagers then went to the mountain
to kill the dragon. But when they arrived, the
dragon had already gone.
From that day on, the village was named
Kesongo Village. Songo meant nine for the nine
shepherds who were eaten by Baruklinting
Dragon.

In the past the county was a kingdom, Muara
Kaman, which lied along the Mahakam River, in
eastern Borneo. It was ruled by Queen Aji Bidara
Putih. She was beautiful, wise, and sensitive.
Many princes and kings proposed her but she
always refused them because she concerned more
about ruling her country and guarding her people.
One day, a Chinese ship came to eastern
Borneo, and the envoys ennounce a proposal of
the prince of China to the Queen. The queen didn't
refuse instantly and replied that she had to ponder
first. After the envoys left the palace, the queen
called a court officer and ordered him to infiltrate
the Chinese ship to gather information about the
prince.
The officer found out that the prince was not
really human. He quickly left the boat and
returned to the palace. He reported that the prince
must have been a phantom, not a human. He
believed that the phantom could be in a human's
form only during the daytime. The queen was so
surprised and got angry. On the next day, she
refused his proposal
The enraged prince ordered his troops to raid
Muara Kaman. The battle was won by the huge
troops of China, and they got close to the palace.
Queen Aji Bidara Putih chewed a leaf of betel
vine and sang a mantra (spell) while holding it.
When she threw it to the Chinese troops, it turned
to giant centipedes. The Chinese troops started to
retreat but three centipedes chased them and sank
the ship.
The site of the sunk ship is now known as
Danau Lipan, Lake of Centipede, with Chinese
trea- hidden on the lake's bed.

named King Sulahkromo. The king had a prime
minister named Raden Sidopekso. The prime
minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung. She was

Oneday, the king sent his prime minister to a
long mission. While the prime minister was away,
the king tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he
failed. He was very angry. Thus, when Raden
Sidopekso went back, the king told him that his
wife was unfaithful to him. The prime minister
was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said
that it was not true. However, Raden Sidopekso
said that he would kill her.
He brought her to the river bank. Before he
kill he and threw her into the river, she said that
her innocence would be proven after Raden
Sidopekso killed her, he threw her dead body into
the dirty river.
The river immediately became clean and

The Rabbit and the Turtle.
One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast
he could run. He was laughing at the turtle for being
so slow. Much to the rabbit's surprise, the turtle
challenged him to a race. The rabbit thought this
was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The fox
was to be the umpire of the race. As the race began,
the rabbit raced way ahead of the turtle, just like
everyone thought. The rabbit got to the halfway
point and could not see the turtle anywhere. He was
hot and tired and decided to stop and take a short
nap.
Even if the turtle passed him, he would be able
to race to the finish line ahead of him. All this time
the turtle kept walking step by step by step. He
never quit no matter how hot or tired he got. He just
kept going. However, the rabbit slept longer than he
