THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

CONCEPTS, ISSUES AND PROSPECTS

(2nd Reading Reaction Paper)

I.

The article is entitled “The Role of Education in Social Transformation: Concepts, Issues and Prospects”

written by Josefina Cortes, Ph. D. the reading discussed about the importance and understanding of education

whether it is non-formal, informal or formal that embodies entirely of learning and social development. It

discusses education as all kinds of learning covering knowledge , attitudes and skills acquired from school and

non-school sources leading to desirable changes in the learner’s cognitive, affective and manipulative behavior.

The study is different from the first reading entitled “ Education and Development: A Cultural

Perspective” because the latter,as explained by the author, stated that the school was successful in teaching

survival behaviors rather than innovative ideas while this reading emphasizes the understanding of education

that embodies entirely of learning and social development.

II.

The author stated that the school is one of the most important institution that we have in our country. He

tried to prove it by his study and research of this topic. The article also talks about the current situation and

concerns of education in our country. She sighted the problems and issues in educational system that our

country needs to address.

III.

As I read the article. I realized and agreed with the autor that using liberal and general education in our

educational system is better. Liberal education free our minds from conventional and narrow perceptions so that

issues and arguments can be examined from any conceivable perspectives in order to render judgements on

acceptable evidence. We are currently living in a rapidly changing world and there is no constant thing in this

world rather than change. So, if we want to improve our life and the society, let us start by changing our

educational perspective.
