ANSI/ASNT CP-189-2020 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD [American National Standard Approval ofan American National Standard requires verification by ANSI that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met by the standards developer. Consensus i established when, inthe jadgment of the ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreement has been reached by directly and materially affected interests. "This standard establishes the minimum requirements forthe qualification and certification of nondestructive testing (NDT) and predictive maintenance (PAM) personnel ‘This standard details the minimum training, education, and experience requirements for NDT personnel and provides criteria for documenting qualifications, and certification vo This standard requires the employer to establish a procedure for the certification of NDT personnel. “? ‘This nandard requires thatthe employer incorporate any unique or additional requirements inthe certification procedure ‘The use of ASNT gentral certifications (e.g, ACCP and ASNT NDT Level 11) may be used in place of employer ‘examinations as applicable, provided there is no conflict withthe governing industry code or standard. 15.1 For Level Il specific and practical examinations the NDT Level II shall ensure thatthe content of these examinations satisfies the requirements in Sections 63.2 and 6.3.3, respectively, in the ‘employer's program. 1.5.2 The use of third-party central certifications satisfying the requirements for employer-based ‘examinations shall be documented in the employer's cetifiation procedure. The person or persons properly designated in the certification procedure to sign certifications on behalf ofthe employer. ~ 24.8 Closed-book Examination. Actual performance of an NDT method conducted inthe work environment resulting in ‘the acquisition of knowledge an skill. This doesnot include formal classroom training, but may include lboratory and on-the-job training as defined by the employers certification procedure. Grading Unit. A qualification specimen canbe divided into sections called grading units, which do ‘not have to be equal length or be equally spaced. Grading units are unflawed or flawed and the percentage of fawed/unflaved grading units required shall be approved by the NDT Level I Formal Training, An organized and documented program of activities designed to impart the [knowledge and sil required to be qualified to this standard. Formal training may be a mix of classroom, practical, and programmed sel(-instruction as approved by the responsible NDT Level IL General Examination A writen examination addressing the basic principles of the applicable NDT method. Method. One of the disciplines of NDT for example, ultrasonic esting, within which various test techniques may exist. ‘NDT Instructor. An individual qualified and designated in accordance with this standard to train of educate NDI personnel (See also Section 37.) NDT Procedure. A written instruction for conducting a nondestructive test. Outside Organization. An agency or inlvidal who provides NDT Level Il services, (See aso paragraph 45.) Personalized Instruction. Personalized instruction may consist of blended classroom, supervised Inboratory, and/or hybrid online competency-based course delivery. Modular content is covered through online presentations, in the classroom, and/or in small groups. Personalized instruction also enables students to achiewe competency using strategies that align with their knowledge, sil, and learning styles. Practical Examination. An examination used to demonstrate an individual’ bility in condocting the NDT methods that willbe performed forthe employer, For practical examinations, questions and answers need not necessarily be written, but observations and results must be documented. Predictive Maintenance (PAM). Evaluates the condition of equipment (typically in service) by performing periodic or continuous (online) equipment condition monitoring. Condition monitoring evaluates leading performance indicators of each item inthe PAM program inventory. These leading indicators may be an increase i electrical resistance or increase vibration from rotating equipment PdM uses principles of statistical process control to determine at what point inthe future raintenance activites will be appropriate while focusing on leading indicators that may signify deterioration in performance which cn lad to equipment flure. Candidates for certification as NDT Level I or Level If shall complete sulicient organized training to become familiar with the principles ofthe method and the practices of te applicable test technique. This training shall be conducted in accordance with a course outline approved by an NDT Level li. 411” NDT Level [and Level IL. The minimum number of training hours required for NDT Level land Level I candidates is described in Appendices A and B. The course shall include the topics contained in ANSVASNT CP-105 for the appropriate NDT method, plus such additional topies as deemed necessary by the NDT Level IIL. The sequence, content, amount of ime spent, and depth of coverage foreach topic shal be approved by the NDT Level Il. Training programs shall include sufficient ‘examinations to demonstrate thatthe necessary information has been coruprehended, 41.1.1 The organized training may include instructor-led training, personalized instruction, virtual instructor-led taining, computer-based traning, of web-based training. Computer based training and web-based training shall track hours and content of training, with student examinations in accordance with 4.12. 4.1.2 Credit. To receive credit for training hours, the individual shall pass final examination covering the topics contained in that program. 4.13 Presentation of Training, All taining shall be presented by an NDT instructor. However, the NDT instructor may use personnel with specialized expertise (or example, metallurgists, welding ‘engineers, et) who are not qualified in accordance with this standard to assist in presentation of specific information, The NDT Level II shall in all eases be responsible forthe content of the ‘completed course. 4.14 NDT Iavel IL Training requirements for NDT Level II ate satsfed as a result of holding a current ASNT Level Il certificate inthe specific NDT method. ANSI/ASNT CP-189-2020 442 Baperience Candidates for certification shall have acquired the practical experience to ensure they are capable of performing the duties of the level in which certification is being sought. G21 NDT Level I and Level Il. The minimum number of hours of experience required for NDT Level | and Level Il candidates is described in Appendix A. 422. NDT Level Il Limited. The minimum number of hours of experience required for NDT Level 1 Limited candidates is described in Appendix B. 42.3 NDT Level I. Experience requirements for NDT Level Il are satisfied as «result of holding a ‘current ASNT Level II certificate in the specific NDT method. 43. Previous Training and Experience fon NDT Level {and Level Il A candidate's previous training and experience may be accepted by the employers NDT Level II if documented and verified. Any laimed training or experience which is ‘not documented and canaot be verified shall be considered invalid, 43:2. NDT Level IT The employer shall verify and document the current validity ofa candidate's ASNT Level I certificate 44 NDT Instructor 44a1 Criteria, An NDT instructor shall meet at leat one of the following crite 441.1 possess a current ASNT Level II certificate in the NDT method tobe taughts or 40412 have academic credentials at least equivalent to a BS. in engineering, physical science, oF technology, and possess adequate knowledge in the NDT method to be taught: oF 44.13 bea graduate of a two-year school of science enginering, or NDT and have five or more dears of experience as an NDT Level I, or equivalent, in the NDT method to be taught: or 44.1 have 10 or more years of NDT experience as an NDT Level I, or equivalent, inthe NDT ‘method to be taught. 44.2 Designation. The NDT instructor shall be designated by an NDT Level I individual. The ‘designation shall become part ofthe individual's qualification records 45. Outside Services. At the option othe employer, an outside organization may be engaged to perform the duties ofan NDT Level Ill. For organizations other than ASNT, the employer shall be responsible for raluating the organization to ensure the services are in accordance with the employer's certification frocedure and this standard, and so documented. An NDT Level IL ofthe engaged ouside organization shall be responsible for the services provided. 50. Qualification and Certifiation . S11 Certification Procedure.
