By now youve probably looked through our pattern ideas and you may be wondering, ‘what exactly is boiled wool? What makes itso special? Boled wool is exactly whatit sounds lke it'sa knitted woollen fabric often made ‘rom pure wool, or rayon mixture} that’s been agitated with extremely hot water ina process 20 known as fling’ This felts and shrinks thefabricand gives ita slighty sturdier feel than regular, unboled woo it also givesit ‘that oh:ro:covetable nubby texture ‘TAKEAWALK ‘The pattermiscut. the pieces are pinned and naw it’s time tose. Boled wool tends tobe a faiy thick fabric when compared to ‘thinner materials such as cotton o awn) so St your machine to usea slightly longer stitch than normal Use a ballpoint needle, which wll lide between the fibres rather than stabbing through them, and feran even ‘easier sew ty using awalking foot. Not quite, ‘Thete are subtle diferences between boiled ‘wool and wool felt Firstly, when we consider thefulling proces, felt sa much more advanced version of boiled wool The fibres have been heated acitatedand meshed together far more fry than those in boiled woo! which etainsakntted texture and ‘a malleable fee, And secondly, felt fees thicker and lufer than boiled woo! duet its matted, shrunken nature NOPREPVS LOW PREP. Some say that because it's already been shrunk, there's need to pre-wash boiled wool nthe same way that you would, say, natural cotton, Whistthisis true the fabric lkaly won't change too much overtime i's bestto give iat attention anyway, just to be sure. Instead of pre-washing your boiled ‘wool you can giv light steaming, but be careful to keep the hotplate ofthe iron amay ‘om the material and keep the steaming light to avo further shrinkage or fibre damage. KEEP YOUR SEAMS OPEN ‘The extra thickness of boiled woo! can make seams fee alittle bulky, especially if there are several ayer of fabric involved. Te get around ‘this trim your allowances back and steam (don’t press them open then hold them in place with aline of topstitching, You can position ths right next to the seam to keep it ‘concealed or make a feature oft by working ‘either side a few milimetes out STAY STABLE Boiled wool can be heavy, so make sure to stablise weaker areas of your garments such as shoulders and necklines to sop them from stretching out overtime. Apply a ightweight stay tape or interfacing along these edges to hold things in place before continuing with your patter as intended. NOLINING NECESSARY Oe ta tere ote ‘of wing boiled wool isthat it doesnt need to belined.
