Background

In 1960, my father, Rev. William Leach was appointed pastor at Oak Grove

Baptist Church, Grayton, MD. Growing up in Washington, DC this meant that

every Sunday we commuted to church for worship services and once a week

for choir rehearsals led by my mother, Annie Leach. I was in my second

year of piano studies so all of this was a new encounter for me to observe

and acknowledge similarities in worship styles from African American

congregations in the city with the sounds, sights, smells and culture of

rural Maryland.

The first Sunday in August was a very special time for the African

American congregations located in Charles County, MD. Revival season was

launched at Oak Grove Baptist which meant members from churches across the

County would converge in one location. Our congregation was the host for

the first service and subsequent services occurred at Mount Hope Baptist,

Gilroy, MD, Zion Hilltop Baptist, Hilltop, MD, Pleasant Grove Baptist,

Marbury, MD and several others. A guest preacher would be engaged by the

host church to serve as the speaker for the week long evening worship

services. Choirs from each church would render the music for the nightly

services. All of the choir directors were leading their ensembles from the

piano. They also commuted to Charles County MD from the greater DC area

for duties with their respective congregations. This model of musical

leadership would be a significant experience for me as I became more

involved with church choirs during my teenage years. This revival season

lasted into the third week of September so there were many opportunities

for people, especially youth and teenagers to connect not only for church

but more important just to hang out.

Deacons from participating churches would lead the ‘devotional period’

that preceded the formal afternoon and/or evening service. Songs from this

period of congregational singing were drawn from hymns, spirituals,

traditional gospel and a few pieces that spontaneously occurred in real

time depending on who might launch that effort. One of the larger than

life characters was Deacon Montgomery from Zion Hilltop Church. At this

time, all of the churches were large wooden frame structures so one could

hear the foot stomping and clapping before entering the church. Deacon

Montgomery often launched into the devotional song ‘One Mo’ River to

Cross’ as the congregation responded enthusiastically with their singing,

dancing and shouts of praise to God. The lyrics from the piece go back to

the days of slavery when African Americans would sometimes gather in

secret places for worship gatherings.

“Jordan River, I’m bound to cross.

Jordan River, I’m bound to cross.

Jordan River, I’m bound to cross.

I’ve got one mo’ river to cross.”

The song and its human percussion accompaniment would grow and grow in

energy and emotion as the verses emerged:

“Mother will be there, She can’t help me to cross.”

“Father will be there, He can’t help me to cross.”

“Jesus will be there, He can help me to cross.”

Stan Spottswood, choral director at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School,

Olney, MD has collaborated with me in getting the musical nuances

translated from aural images to scored vocal and percussion parts. Seven

years ago, Stan arranged ‘Oh Lord, I Want You to Help Me’ for Essence of

Joy, Penn State. I invited Stan to lift the opening and closing portions

of his composition as the closing statement for my arrangement of One Mo’

River to Cross. The message within both pieces are profound, engaging and

appropriate reminders for singers and audiences to embrace the moment and

musical nuance that comes forward when people share their collective song.

The text, rhythmic energy and sense of timelessness goes beyond my

formative years to the present moment as all of us continue to navigate

aspects of the ‘new normal’ as it relates to how one can stay focused on

what is yet to come while still standing tall on the shoulders of those

who have come before us.

Oh Lord, I want You to help me.”

Percussion Notes
The overall affect of the percussive sounds is to anchor the pulse of this

arrangement. It should never be allowed to ‘take over’ the mood nor

dynamics. The rhythmic patterns that are provided when combined should

imitate the ‘sounds of Sunday morning worship’ in a setting where no

instrument beyond the piano or organ is in place. The percussion whether a

combination of body sounds (hand clapping, foot stomping, shuffle type

movement from side to side) will animate the style of the piece in

positive ways. If in doubt, keep it simple but NEVER rush the tempo.

Performance Note
This arrangement is ideal for audience participation especially during the

One Mo’ River to Cross portion. By the time the refrain returns after the

three verses, the conductor may simply turn around to the audience and

invite them to sing with the choir. Repeat the refrain as many times as

you like before moving into the final statement of the piece, Oh Lord I

Want You to Help Me. Something special will occur as soloist, choir,

audience, text and rhythmic pulse combine in ways that are not obvious on

the score. Enjoy!
