Security ‐ AES 256
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a specification for the encryption of
electronic data established by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) in 2001
AES is a symmetric‐key algorithm, meaning the same key is used for both encrypting
and decrypting the data
AES‐256 is supported by RADWIN 5000 HBS/HSU using HW Rev. 9 and above
AES‐256 can be activated by a license key (purchased per PN – see table below)
AES‐128 & AES‐256 are supported simultaneously in the same sector
AES‐256 supported through software upgrade to release 3.4.80

3.650 – 3.700 GHz FCC
As spectrum in 900MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5.8GHz unlicensed bands became saturated, FCC
opened 3.65‐3.70 GHz as unlicensed spectrum for general use
Radio equipment operating in the 3.65GHz band must use “contention‐based protocols”
that have been certified by the FCC to minimize interference
RADWIN contention‐based parameters:
» Sharing Percentage: (between 15 ‐ 75%, default
50%) is the maximum capacity the HBS is
prepared to relinquish in favor of other
transmitters on this band
» Minimal Contention slot length: (5 ‐ 20ms,
default 10ms) is the amount of time the HBS is
prepared to wait to check again for channel
availability

Smart Bandwidth Management (SBM)
Here is a case of SBM (DBA):
3 users can reach a peak if 18Mbps
and assured (min) service of 6Mbps
User #1 User #3
User #2
Here is another case of SBM (DBA):
We see more users with great peak
throughput but with less assured
capacity
RADWIN Training Center 72
Smart Bandwidth Management (SBM)
Which applications need SBM?
» Primarily ‐ Service providers , utilizing better the air interface by adding more users and providing
more capacity
» In very rear cases – Video Surveillance, when camera resolution is changed on the fly
RADWIN advantages
» Assured BW per user when Base Station suffers from congestion
» HSUs capacity is not degraded due to performance deterioration of other HSUs in a sector
RADWIN Training Center 73
Smart Bandwidth Management (SBM)
• SBM is supported by RW‐5200, RW‐5100,
RW‐5050
• SBM is not supported by RW‐5025
• There are 64 Time Slots per Sector
• 63 TS can be assigned to HSUs
• Single TS is dedicated for maintaining and
managing the SBM algorithm
Thumb rule – assign the minimum number of
• A sector supports up to 32 HSUs TS that allow you achieving the required
service. This will guarantee maximum
• SBM is implemented in two directions: utilization of the SBM mechanism.
Uplink and Downlink
RADWIN Training Center 74
Smart Bandwidth Management (SBM) ‐ Terminology
Allocated Time Slots:
• These are the assigned TS for a specific HSU
• Allocated TS invoke Assured Throughput
• The more we allocate, the less Time Slots the
SBM can utilize Allocated TS
• The less TS we allocate, the more TS we can use
for SBM
• The user needs to engineer the right balance
between number of allocated TS and available TS
according to its application and SLA criteria
RADWIN Training Center 75
Smart Bandwidth Management (SBM) ‐ Terminology
Peak Throughput:
• This the maximum throughput an HSU can utilize if other HSUs have no traffic

Time Slot for Management
• The Smart Bandwidth Management
algorithm consumes some bps to be
able to monitor, track and allocate the
required number of time slots per HSU
• For that reason the radio dedicates a
single Time Slot for management and
63 Time Slots for HSUs
RADWIN Training Center 77
SBM in the Uplink direction
Let us assume we have a single HSU in the sector which requires 3 times slots to achieve
6Mbps in UL (green color in image):
RADWIN Training Center 78
SBM in the Uplink direction
A 2nd HSU is registered to the sector – it requires 2 time slots to achieve 4Mbps in the UL
direction (turquoise color in image):
RADWIN Training Center 79

Similarly a 3rd HSU is registered – it requires 4 time slots to achieve 7 Mbps in the UL
direction (red in image)
Allocated TS
Now we have the following map:
• 1 TS for SBM
• 3 TS for Green HSU
• 2 TS for Turquoise HSU
• 4 TS for Red HSU
We have 54 free time slots which
we can allocate dynamically to
Free TS
the registered HSUs
RADWIN Training Center 80
SBM in the Uplink direction
How do we assign the free time slots?
How many TS should we assign per HSU?
A single HSU within the sector will utilize all the 63
time slots allocated by the SBM
When more HSUs are registered, all the HSUs will share
the remaining free time slots. The allocation is
proportional to their allocated number of time slots.
For example:
HSUs with 2 allocated TS will be given less free TS than
HSU with 20 allocated TS

• Assuming HSU #1 and HSU #3 transmit up to their Assured Tput rates, HSU #2 can fully
utilize the remaining 11 Time Slots: 25.3Mbps + (11 TS x 1.2Mbps) = 38.6Mbps

Service Level
Mobility or Nomadic HSUs are attributed by a HSU Service Level A to D
Each service level defines the following:
Max number of HSUs on this level – up to 32
Number of Timeslots per HSU ‐ up to 32
VLAN, MIR, QoS, Rate, Antenna Type – configuration is done via one HSU that is connected to
the HBS, one configured, its level settings are exported to all HMUs with the same level
RADWIN Training Center 103
Service Level ‐ Example
8 Time Slots per unit X 3 mobile units at level A
6 Time Slots per unit X 3 units at level B
4 Time Slots per unit X 3 units at level C
Question – why do we have only 10 TS remaining?
RADWIN Training Center 104
Service Level
Motivation – Different types of mobile vehicles with different requirements
Level A – Patrol car with HD camera. Requirement = 4Mbps in UL (3 x TS @10Mhz)
Level B – Officer car with HD camera requires 4Mbps + 4Mbps DATA upload = 6 x TS @ 10Mhz
» Service Level parameters should be pre‐configured on each HBS in the network
» Each HMU should be pre‐configured with its Service Level type

HMU Type
Mobile / Nomadic
Nomadic and Mobile have different service level configuration
Service Level
Four levels of HMUs: A‐D
Each level has: Number of TS & Number of HMUs
Maximum Distance
Nominal common distance assumed by the HBS for all mobile units (HMUs) in its sector
Considered as the max distance any HMU can be from a HBS (i.e. ‐ identical propagation
delay for all HMUs)
Tradeoff – the longer the distance the lower the performance
RADWIN Training Center 106
HMU Configuration (via HBS)
Prior to the RF planning, a site survey and RSS measurement per sector should be
performed
Users should be familiar with RSS levels of each sector
Accurate Mobility planning allows overlapping sector coverage
HMU can be configured to synch on optimal signal level based on RSS Threshold
RSS Threshold improves the handover process by allowing more accurate handover
criteria
RSS Threshold is configured per HMU
RADWIN Training Center 107
HMU Synchronization Process
1. HMU scans for available HBSs having identical Sector ID
2. HMU selects the first HBS that its RSS level is above RSS threshold
3. In case HMU performed full cycle of scanning and did not find HBS above the RSS
threshold, the HMU selects the best HBS based on RSS level
4. HBS enables service to the HMU according the following criteria:
» Support the Service‐Level of the HMU
» The Service‐Level is available (not occupied by other HMUs in the same level)
5. Handover process (Break‐before‐Make) < 0.5sec:
» Break: HMU drops the Link when the actual capacity is below a certain capacity
threshold (Handover between HBSs is initiated by the HMU itself)
» Make: Goto Step #1
