Reflection / Journal Entry of a Learner-Centered Philosophy in Media

and Information Literacy Class

As I reflect on the past two quarters of my teaching experience in the Senior

High School MIL (Media and Information Literacy) classes, I am thrilled to
share how the consistent application of my learner-centered teaching
philosophy has positively impacted the teaching-learning process.
Embracing this approach has allowed me to create a student-centered
environment where learners actively participate and take ownership of their
education, enhancing the MIL learning competencies as outlined by DepEd
Philippines.

In the first quarter, we focused on developing critical thinking skills related

to MIL concepts, such as media literacy, information evaluation, and ethical
media use. Throughout the quarter, I applied a learner-centered approach
by incorporating various interactive and collaborative activities that engaged
students actively in the learning process. One such activity was the "Media
Analysis Project," where students were tasked with analyzing and critiquing
media content to identify biases, misinformation, and propaganda. By
allowing students to choose the media content they wanted to analyze and
encouraging them to work in groups, I observed a significant increase in
their critical thinking abilities. Students not only demonstrated a deeper
understanding of media literacy concepts but also showcased their ability to
think critically and present their findings in a coherent manner.

In the second quarter, we delved deeper into digital citizenship, information

ethics, and media production. Recognizing the importance of learner
autonomy, I designed lessons that encouraged students to explore real-life
issues and take an active role in addressing them. For instance, we engaged
in a community project where students collaborated to create media
campaigns promoting responsible digital citizenship and combating online
hate speech. Through this project, students had the opportunity to apply
their MIL competencies while making a positive impact on their local
community. They conducted research, developed creative media materials,
and presented their campaigns to the school and wider community. The
learner-centered approach empowered students to take ownership of the
project, from ideation to implementation, and allowed them to develop
essential 21st-century skills such as communication, critical thinking, and
digital media production.

Throughout both quarters, I consistently implemented formative

assessments and provided timely feedback to students, enabling them to
reflect on their progress and set goals for improvement. This approach,

aligned with the learner-centered philosophy, allowed students to actively

engage in self-assessment and take responsibility for their own learning
journey. By fostering a supportive and collaborative classroom environment,
I witnessed students becoming more confident, independent learners who
were motivated to continuously enhance their MIL competencies.

By applying a learner-centered teaching philosophy, I have seen remarkable

growth in my students' MIL competencies. They have developed critical
thinking skills, media literacy awareness, digital citizenship values, and the
ability to create meaningful media products. Moreover, students have
become active participants in the teaching-learning process, taking
ownership of their education and making connections between MIL concepts
and real-life applications.

As I look ahead to the next semester, I am excited to further refine and

enhance my learner-centered approach, integrating more student-led
initiatives, collaborative projects, and interactive discussions. By continuing
to prioritize the involvement and empowerment of learners, I am confident
that my students will continue to thrive in their MIL competencies,
becoming responsible and critical users of media and information.

Through the application of a learner-centered teaching philosophy, I have

witnessed the transformative impact it has on students' engagement,
learning outcomes, and their ability to navigate the media-rich world around
them. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their educational
journey and look forward to the continued growth and success of my MIL
classes.
