I arranged to stay in a farmhouse outside a village in southern Italy. My itinerary said that the
plane arrived in Italy at five o’clock in the afternoon and it was a thirty-minute drive from the
airport to the village. I wanted to get to my destination before it got dark, so I could have a
drink, watch the sunset, and enjoy an evening meal!
The problems began at Healthrow airport. My plane was three hours late. I walked around the
airport, looked in the shops, and drank coffee in the cafe’s. I didn’t eat anything. That was a
mistake! When the plane finally took off, they gave me a cold, tasteless meal which I couldn’t
eat.
We arrived in Italy in the early evening. The sun was setting as I was collecting my bags! I
missed it completely! I went to the desk to find my hire car and that’s when I discovered the
next problem. The receptionist couldn’t find my name on the computer and there were no more
cars. There were no buses or trains to the village, and the taxis were on strike.
The receptionist felt sorry for me. She phoned her brother, Alessandro, who agreed to take me
to the village. Alessandro arrived in a very old car and we set off. Fifteen minutes later … we
broke down. I was tired, depressed, and very, very hungry. Luckily, Alessandro was a
mechanic. After an hour, he fixed the car and we started driving again.
It was nearly midnight when we arrived at the farmhouse. A man opened the door and smiled.
‘Come in,’ he said. ‘We waited for you.’ I sat with a group of the friendliest people I’ve ever
met and had an absolutely wonderful meal.

Some of the oldest people in the world are said to live in Azerbaijan. The most
famous of all was Shirali Muslimov, who died on 2 September 1973 at the age of 168.
Today doctor do not think this is possible, but he was a very old man – probably
nearer 120 than 160!
Another person who was once the oldest person in the world was Kamato Hongo. She
was born in 1887, in Japan, and died in 2003 at the age of 116. Kamato usually slept
for two full days at a time and then was awake for two full days. She said to live a
long life you mustn’t “think too much”, and her favourite things were sugar, steak and
green tea.
Joan Riudavets Moll was born on 15 December 1889, on the Balearic Island of
Menorca. He still lives there, spending up to 14 hours a day asleep. Riudavets really
wanted to be a doctor but he became a shoemaker, working at home in the family
business. He has three daughters in all, with five grandsons and six great
grandchildren. He rarely leaves his home. He thinks planes and electricity are the
most important changes he has seen in his life. During his life he has played a lot of
football – his favourite game – and still enjoys singing and playing the guitar. What

BURGLARS LOVE THE AFTERNOON
Most house burglaries happen between 2p.m and 6p.m, say the police.
Inspector Ian Sauders told our newspaper that the number of house burglaries has
gone up by more than 30% compare with last year. He also said that 67% of
burglaries ,happen when people have gone out and forgotten to close a door or a
window.
He went on to a report that night-time burglaries are unusual because families are
usually at home at that time. But he said that winter afternoons are the best time for
burglars because it is dark and they can’t be seen easily. Also many houses are empty
at that time, because people are often still at work.
Inspector Sauders said that it is a good idea to leave lights on in living rooms and
bedrooms when you go on holidays. This will help to keep burglars away. He also
asked neighbours to watch the other houses in the street when people are not at home.
They should call the police if they see anything strange. ‘We will also tell you how to
make your house safe’. Inspestor Sauders said. ‘This kind of help costs nothing.
