PMC521 CURRICULUM THEORY AND PRACTICE

THIRD COMPONENT OF ASSESSMENT

Review report. This report will be done in a form of a literature review report. The method of this review report
should be Systematic Literature Review (SLR). This is a pair work.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Narrative literature review critiques the literature and summarizes the body of a literature.
Narrative review also draws conclusions about the topic and identifies gaps or
inconsistencies in a body of knowledge. You need to have a sufficiently focused research
question to conduct a narrative literature review.
2. Systematic literature review requires more rigorous and well-defined approach compared to
most other types of literature review. Systematic literature review is comprehensive and
details the timeframe within which the literature was selected.
3. Argumentative literature review, as the name implies, examines literature selectively in
order to support or refute an argument, deeply imbedded assumption, or philosophical
problem already established in the literature.
4. Integrative literature review reviews, critiques, and synthesizes secondary data about
research topic in an integrated way such that new frameworks and perspectives on the topic
are generated.
5. Theoretical literature review focuses on a pool of theory that has accumulated in regard to
an issue, concept, theory, phenomena. Theoretical literature reviews play an instrumental
role in establishing what theories already exist, the relationships between them, to what
degree the existing theories have been investigated, and to develop new hypotheses to be
tested.

TASK: PRODUCE AN ARTICLE ON CURRICULUM ISSUES USING THE SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE

REVIEW

1. Identify specific curriculum issues, concepts that interest you. Read articles in journals
on curriculum studies.
2. You could not do an SLR article on issues/concepts that have been done using the same
technique.
3. Components of SLR article.
(Example: A Systematic Literature Review of 21st Century Skills and Competencies in
Primary Education)

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
- Provide background of the issue
- State specific research questions
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK/DEVELOPMENT OF THE ISSUE
- Elaborate about 1-2 theories related to the issue
METHODOLOGY
- The SLR approach – give justification why it is appropriate
- The selection and inclusion criteria (selection of articles) – explain how it is done
- Selection of database - why
- Specific terms used for searching
- Explain the sample analysis
FINDINGS (To answer the research questions)
DISCUSSION
LIMITATIONS AND FOUNDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH
CONCLUSION
