Weekly Journal Week 1

I am doing my internship at Primary Pediatrics. My first day of work there was on Wednesday

due to me having time to completely move in back home before starting my internship. I was

very nervous going to work my first day because I did not know what to expect or what I was

going to be doing exactly. I knew my daily tasks included shadowing nurses on different halls

and working in the lab but was not sure where I was going to be put the first day. On

Wednesday, I shadowed a nurse named Taylor all day. She was the main nurse for a physician

named Dr. Payne. She showed me how she charted for different patients and what everything

meant on their program when it came to seeing patients and checking them in. I was able to

follow her into rooms and see how she took different patients vitals and then how she charted

their vitals. Taylor was very personable and really made me feel welcomed and made sure I was

comfortable. This really helped me throughout the rest of the day, and she made me realize how

much I was going to love this internship. On Thursday, I was on a different physician’s hall and

with a different nurse. The nurse I followed around this day was a little bit older than Taylor and

her name was Jocelyn. On Thursday I kind of did the same thing I did on Wednesday when it

came to following her into patients’ rooms and watching her take their vitals. The only thing

different I did on Thursday was I went to the lab when different tests needed to be ran and watch

the lab tech run the tests. This was very neat for me to see because I was able to see what

different things meant that the blood or urine sample produced. On Friday, I was back with
Taylor which was a lot of fun for me. Taylor let me kind of do the same thing, but she also let me

run different tests back to the main lab to the techs. This was fun for me because I got to interact

with more tests that were ran and some of the ways they ran the tests were tests I ran in

microbiology. I also got to hold some newborn babies and weigh them which completely made

my day and I also had to chase a 2-year-old down to get him back into his room. My first three

days at my internship educated me in so many ways. I was educated when it came to how you

take different patients vitals, run different tests on them depending on their age, and also how

you communicate with the patients and their parents. I am really hoping that this week will be a

lot of the same tasks but also that I will be on other physicians’ halls to see how they do things

differently. I really want to see if I can train at my internship so in the next couple of weeks I can

go in and take the patients vitals before the doctor comes to see them. I am very excited for this

internship and cannot wait to see everything it brings me when preparing for nursing school.

This week at my internship site was very interesting but so much fun. On Monday I was

scheduled to work with Taylor again which I was excited about. Wesley, the manager, called me

up to his office and asked me to sign a HIPPA form but then told me I was going to be moved to

a different hall because one of the nurse techs had broken her foot and needed help. When I went

to the other hall, I ended up helping her by working patients up. This meant that I was in charge

of going into the patients’ rooms and getting their vitals and writing down their symptoms or

concerns if they were sick. This made me nervous at first because I had only been shadowing

someone doing that the week before but had never actually done it. I ended up loving working

patients up and did a lot better than I thought I would. On Tuesday, Taylor taught me how to

chart patients’ vitals and pull templates for the doctor. She then made me work patients up while

charting which was very overwhelming but made me realize how much I could multi-task. On

Wednesday I was a full nurse tech and was in charge of all the sick patients on Dr. Paynes hall.

This made me realize why I wanted to work with kids and be a nurse. Thursday and Friday I

shadowed on a different hall and helped them with different rooms when it was needed. When I

wasn’t in a patient room I was in the lab watching how they got different blood levels and culture

urine and strep tests. I really enjoyed learning what different levels meant and how to tell if

someone was positive for an illness or not. I was very comfortable being around Taylor and on

Dr. Paynes hall so I got nervous when I was moving around on different halls. There was no
reason for me to be nervous though because everyone was so welcoming and would help me out

whenever I had questions or did not know how to do something. I became very close with the

nurses on Dr. Slades hall who I worked for on Thursday and Friday. I also got to have a very

personable conversation with Dr. Slade about nursing school and what I should expect and learn

from interning at Primary Pediatrics this summer. I believe that this week of work truly

challenged me, but I also impressed myself a lot. I learned how to multi-task when taking

patients vitals and then having to chart everything down. I also learned how to communicate with

concerned parents regarding their child’s illness and how to reassure them. I am very excited to

see what next week brings and whose hall I will be working on with different nurse techs and

patients.

My internship site continues to amaze me as each week passes by. Every week I am

doing something different with either a nurse or lab tech and learning new skills with everyone.

This week I started off working with one of my good friends as a lab tech. She was able to show

me how they draw blood, read off CBCs, take urine samples, and test for mono, strep, and the

flu. It was very interesting to see the prep for these tests and how each machine is different when

reading off the results from each test. On Tuesday, I worked with another lab tech on a different

hall and was able to see how they do their lab tests differently. Each hall has a different way of

doing things depending on what the doctor wants. On Wednesday, I was back with the girl who

trained me as a nurse tech. I was moving sick patients up and charting them. I really enjoyed this

because I was doing it all by myself and surprised myself when it came to how well I could

multi-task everything. On Thursday, I was with a different nurse tech for the first half of the day.

We both worked patients up and took their vitals either together or by ourselves. For the second

half of the day, I was with the lab tech. She walked me through a blood draw and got me to assist

her with almost 9 different blood draws. Towards the end of the day, we got really slammed so I

went into patients’ rooms to do their finger pricks. I had done some finger pricks before but

never on my own. I absolutely loved this and was so excited to be able to do it by myself. On

Friday, I followed a nurse around. A nurse and nurse tech are different because the techs get
patients vitals and work them up. A nurse answers phone calls from parents, gives shots, and

orders certain medications for patients. The nurse was able to walk me through different shots

and how they are admitted differently depending on patients age and size. I was also able to

listen in on phone calls and learn why they gave certain recommendations to parents depending

on the request of their sick child. Overall, this week was awesome for me. It was very tiring

because I was always on the go, but I would honestly rather have it that way than being bored. I

was able to learn more about blood tests and why they were needed, how different lab machines

work, and how shots were admitted to certain patients. Learning all of this and new skills is

making me so excited for nursing school and so excited for what more is to come in this

internship.

This week at my internship site I had a lot of fun and was trusted by a lot of different

people to challenge myself and complete tasks without any help. It was nice not having to go in

on Monday because I was able to get a break and hang out with my family. On Tuesday, I was

trusted to help train a girl to be a nurse tech. I was on Dr. Slades hall this day and we were slow

because Dr. Slade was out of town, so we were only taking sick visits. All day the girl training

followed me around taking notes on what she needed to do as a nurse tech and all the different

questions you needed to ask the patients and their families. After lunch, I let the girl take over

and go in the rooms asking the patients the questions and taking their vitals. She did amazing

when I let her take over and killed it. I was very proud of her and of myself because of how

quickly she caught on and how easy it was for me to train her. On Wednesday I was on a hall

that I had never been on before. I was in their lab working with their lab tech. She was fun and

was able to teach me how to do strep cultures and look to see if a patient was negative or positive

for strep. She also taught me how to write all the tests down in a logbook for every test that is run

that day. The lab tech ended up having to leave unexpectedly to take her husband to the doctor,

so I oversaw running the lab at this point. I got a little nervous to run the lab by myself because I

did not want to mess anything up, but I was able to remember everything I was taught and do a

great job at running the lab. On Thursday and Friday, I was on the same hall with the same girl. I

was working with this hall’s lab tech as well. I oversaw all finger pricks on Thursday and Friday

and went into most rooms and administered the patients finger prick. I really enjoyed this

because it pushed me through my comfort zone and made me very excited for nursing school. On

Friday I also drew blood from one of my co-workers with a 25-gauge butterfly needle. I had

watched multiple times when someone had to get their blood drawn but had never stuck someone
with a needle before. On Friday, the lab tech wanted me to try to draw her blood to see if I could

get it and I did. This week challenged me when it came to putting my skills to use and working

alone with certain tasks. I was able to learn how I can push myself through my comfort zone and

truly trusting myself when it came to working without being supervised. I am really excited to

see what this week brings at my internship site!

This week started off well but did not end with the best result. One of the main nurse

techs on Dr. Kacsho’s hall was out on vacation this whole week. Because of this, I took over as

the main nurse tech on this hall. Each day was different because we were seeing all kinds of

patients with different needs. On Monday we were extremely busy, so the time went by super-

fast. I oversaw one side of the hallway, and the other nurse tech did the other side. That day I

saw well-checks, sick, pre-op, and med check patients. We had a lot of well checks this day so I

was able to take their vitals and measure them while someone else would go in and take their

blood pressure. I am still trying to learn how to do blood pressure so I figured I would let

someone else get their blood pressure since I am still in training with that. On Tuesday, we had a
lot of no-shows and cancellations, so we did not see as many patients. This was nice because we

got a break throughout the day unlike Monday. On Wednesday, I worked with a different nurse

tech who normally works in the after-hours. She was very outgoing and helpful, so it was nice to

have her. On Thursday, we had a lot of patients, and the nurse practitioner was back on our

hallway. Having the nurse practitioner helped speed up seeing patients and the primary physician

was not as stressed. This day I was able to try another blood draw again and I was able to get it

right away. I also did another Bili on a baby and stuck it my first time. The reason we perform

Bilis on babies is to check their bilirubin and jaundice levels. The baby receives a heel prick, and

you must fill a tube up a certain amount to run the Bili. I tried doing one of these about a week

ago and was not able to get enough blood which discouraged me. When I was asked to do it

again, I got scared but easily worked up the confidence to try again. On Friday morning I woke

up with a 101 fever. This really upset me because I was already scared about getting sick and

really cannot afford to take any days off work. I went in and got tested for the flu and it was

negative. On Friday night I got extremely sick and passed out. I am pretty sure I just had a 24-

hour stomach bug that I got from a patient. I did miss work on Friday and was not a huge fan of

just sitting around the house. This made me realize how much I do love my internship site and all

the work I am doing there. I am excited to return to work tomorrow and just hope I am well

enough to make it a full day even though I am still very weak. This week I was able to learn how

hard I need to work to keep my immunity level up, so I do not get sick again. I also learned to

always try again if something does not work out the first time.

This week at work was such an amazing week for me. The reason for this is because it

was the first time, I truly realized that working with kids was a profession that I was very excited

to go into. I finally was on my own in the lab and on my own when it came to being a nurse tech.

I was a little skeptical to go back to work on Monday due to me being so sick over the weekend.

My supervisor was very sweet and came and checked on me multiple times to make sure I was

feeling okay throughout the day. Monday, I tried to take it slow but I was a nurse tech that day so

that was not really the case. It was my first time performing a blood draw on a patient and I was

able to do both lab and nurse tech tasks. On Tuesday, I went back and teched with the girl who

trained me at the beginning of this internship. I always love working with her because we have

become very close in the past month, and I feel very comfortable around her. We were not as
busy on Tuesday which was nice to have a break for the day. On Wednesday, the weather was

terrible which meant a lot of patients either rescheduled or did not show up for their

appointment. I am not a huge fan of days like these because we are very slow, so the day moved

by extremely slow. I also do not like these days because you do not see a lot of patients and

interacting with the patients is one of my favorite things about this internship. On Thursday, I

was in the main lab learning how to run certain tests. I learned how to run a lead test on a CBC

and how to order certain STI tests through different companies depending on the patient’s

insurance. This was very exciting for me because it was my first time in the main lab, and I

caught on extremely quickly when it came to learning all the different skills and steps you must

do. We only had two doctors working so we did not get a lot of patients but that did not really

matter to me. On Friday, I worked on a hall I have teched on a lot. I love working under this

main doctor and her staff because they are so fun to be around and help me with anything I need.

We saw 100 patients this day which made us so busy, and I felt like I was barely able to take a

break due to all the appointments. Even though these days are busy I do not mind because I am

able to get a lot of practice in and I am also able to multi-task which is something I have gotten

pretty good at. I am still loving my internship site and am realizing how fast I am at learning new

techniques and skills. I am very excited to have Monday off of next week to get a break and have

some time to relax but cannot wait to see what all I do next week!

This week at work was a little bit different from most weeks. Typically, I am switching

between different hallways and with different people. Every day except one day I was on only

one doctors hallway which was different for me. I also have only ever been a nurse tech by

myself. This week I was the lab tech and ran the lab with another lab tech for a doctors’ hallway.

This was different because I had never fully run a lab, I had only just been trained. The week

started off great because I got Monday off of work and was able to finally relax.

On Tuesday, I got to work, and Dr. Kascohs lab tech said that her and I were going to be

running the lab together. I was in charge of finger pricks and blood draws. Every patient gets a

finger prick at their well check if they are 2 years old and up. When the patient turns 10, they

have to get a blood draw. I had done a couple of blood draws before but never on my own. I
made Molly, the main lab tech, go in there with me for a few of them. After lunch, she told me

that I was on my own. I was nervous to do it by myself, but it honestly was not bad at all.

On Wednesday, I oversaw covering one of the nurse techs on a doctor’s hallway. This

meant that I was the nurse tech for that doctor until the girl got back. After I got done being the

nurse tech, I went back to Dr. Kascohs hall and took over the lab. This time I was the only lab

tech. I had to chart every order that was given and did all the bloodwork. This was very fun for

me, but I got very stressed out when we got busy. It was very hard for me to have to multi-task

while going in rooms and doing finger pricks/blood draws.

On Thursday, I was working with Molly again in the lab. She had to go help someone

else with something so for the first part it was just me in the lab. It was slow, so I did not see a

lot of patients. Once we got back from lunch we were slammed with patients. Molly and I

teamed up and would go in room after room following the doctors’ orders of what she needed.

This made the day go by fast.

On Friday, I was schedule to work with Molly on Dr. Kascohs hall. I got a text from my

supervisor that I needed to go on another hall to run their lab. The main lab tech had to go home

sick and the guy she was training did not know how to run the lab on his own. I went and helped

him and trained him in the lab. This was very neat for me because I felt like my supervisor

trusted me enough to go and train someone else when I just fully learned how to run the lab all

by myself.

This week was such a good week for me. The reasoning for this was because I realized

how quick of a learner I was when it came to the lab. I also was very thankful for Molly because

even when I got scared, she still pushed me to do it because she knew I could. Little did I know,
this would help train me to be able to run the lab by myself. I am very excited to see what this

week has in store for me!!

This week at work was not my favorite just because of how slow we were. The doctor’s

hallway I have been working on recently was on vacation, so the nurse practitioner was the only

doctor seeing patients on our hallway. Due to this, we did not see a ton of patients, so the days

went by really slow, but we also did not get to see a ton of patients.

On Monday, I was the nurse tech for Dr. Kacsohs hallway. That morning we were really

slow because the doctor was not there but also because we had a really bad storm pass through

Macon in the morning. Due to this we had a lot of cancellations and rescheduled appointments,

so we were not really busy at all the rest of the day.

On Tuesday, I was the main lab tech on the same hallway. I had never really done this

completely by myself, so this was the first time. I was nervous at first but after seeing a few

patients I realized I knew what I was doing and that I did not need to be scared. Tuesday was
really fun just because it was different for me, and I was able to remain confident in myself for

the rest of the day.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I was a nurse tech again on the same doctor’s

hallway. On Wednesday, I was completely by myself which was not terrible at all. On Thursday

and Friday, I had a little bit of help which helped me out because we were a lot busier on

Thursday and Friday.

There were a few things I learned this week which was exciting for me. I finally was able

to take a patient’s blood pressure all by myself which has recently been a challenge for me. I was

also able to run the lab by myself and was able to not freak myself out and remain confident in

myself and skills. I am really happy to have two days off because I am traveling to go on a

vacation but I am excited to see what next week of works holds also.

This week at work was very hectic and busy. The reason it was hectic for me was because

I had just come from a vacation and was not truly ready to go back. Along with that, a lot of

patients had well-checks and sick appointments after the holiday. Wednesday, Thursday, and

Friday we were nonstop seeing patients and two days did not even get a lunch break. With us

being so busy time went by extremely fast which was very nice. I will say it is very hard coming

back from a vacation and having to go back to the real world. This is something I am not looking

forward to in the future but am glad I am experiencing it now.

On Wednesday, I worked on Dr. Kacsohs hall as her nurse tech. I feel like I have kind of

been assigned to working on her hallway just about every week. The reason I am always on her

hallway is because she only has one nurse tech and on busy weeks like last week, she needs two

nurse techs. On Wednesday we were not too busy which was very nice especially since it was

my first day back.

On Thursday, I had the same position as the day before. This day it was very stressful

because we saw 120 patients which was not normal. We were not supposed to work through

lunch but because of the number of patients we ended up having to. I honestly was very proud of

myself for how well I multi-tasked this day. I did have a hard time this day as well because one

of my co-workers was very rude to me which really made me upset. It took me a minute before I

was okay, but I just had to learn to brush it off and not let it keep me from working.

On Friday, we were just as busy as Thursday. We had a ton of well-checks and a lot of

families with multiple patients. We were the lunch provider, and it was a co-worker’s birthday,

so we celebrated her with cake which was a lot of fun. Since we were so busy on Thursday I kind

of knew how to handle everything on Friday.

This week I learned a few lessons that will help me in future jobs. I learned how to deal

with co-workers when they are not very nice. I also learned how to not let stress get the best of

my skills when work can be stressful. I am very excited for this upcoming week and cannot wait

to learn new skills!
