How does Rain Fall?
Rain is one of the main sources of fresh water for almost all people in the world. It provides suitable
conditions for diverse ecosystems. It is also used as hydroelectric power plants and crop irrigation.
But, do you know how rain happens? The rain’s phenomenon is actually what we often call as
“water circle.” The concept of the water cycle involves the sun heating the Earth’s surface water and
causing the surface water to evaporate. Then the water vapor rises into the Earth’s atmosphere.
The water in the atmosphere cools and condenses into liquid droplets. The droplets grow bigger
and heavier and fall to the Earth as precipitation. However, not all rain can reach the surface of the
earth. Some evaporates while falling through dry air. This is what we call as “Virga”, a phenomenon
which is often seen in hot, dry desert regions.

What is ‘extreme’ weather? Why are people talking about it these days? ‘Extreme’ weather is an
unusual weather event such as rainfall, a drought or a heat wave in the wrong place or at the wrong
time. In theory, they are very rare. But these days, our TV screens are constantly showing such
extreme weather events. Take just three news stories from 2010: 28 centimetres of rain fell on Rio
de Janeiro in 24 hours, Nashville, USA, had 33 centimetres of rain in two days and there was record
rainfall in Pakistan.

The effects of this kind of rainfall are dramatic and lethal. In Rio de Janeiro, landslides followed,
burying hundreds of people. In Pakistan, the floods affected 20 million people. Meanwhile, other
parts of the world suffer devastating droughts. Australia, Russia and East Africa have been hit in the
last ten years. And then there are unexpected heat waves, such as in 2003 in Europe. That summer,
35,000 deaths were said to be heat-related.

So, what is happening to our weather? Are these extreme events part of a natural cycle? Or are they
caused by human activity and its effects on the Earth’s climate? Peter Miller says it’s probably a
mixture of both of these things. On the one hand, the most important influences on weather events
are natural cycles in the climate. Two of the most famous weather cycles, El Niño and La Niña,
originate in the Pacific Ocean. The heat from the warm ocean rises high into the atmosphere and
affects weather all around the world. On the other hand, the temperature of the Earth’s oceans is
slowly but steadily going up. And this is a result of human activity. We are producing greenhouse
gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. This heat warms up the atmosphere, land and
oceans. Warmer oceans produce more water vapour – think of heating a pan of water in your
kitchen. Turn up the heat, it produces steam more quickly. Satellite data tells us that the water
vapour in the atmosphere has gone up by four percent in 25 years. This warm, wet air turns into the
rain, storms, hurricanes and typhoons that we are increasingly experiencing.

The honey bee is an extraordinary creature that has been fascinating humans since ancient times.
They are incredibly efficient pollinators and also play a vital role in the production of honey. Their
complex social structure, sophisticated communication systems, and ability to adapt to changing
environments make them truly remarkable. Bees are incredibly interesting creatures that have the
remarkable ability to collect nectar from flowers and then pass on the sweet liquid to other bees in
the hive to be turned into honey. This process requires a great deal of skill and coordination
between all of the bees in the colony, making it one of nature's most impressive achievements. This
process of collecting nectar starts when the bees use special tubes on their face to extract it from
the flowers. Once they have a substantial amount, they transport it back to their home hive
where they store it and use it as food for the rest of the colony. There, house bees start processing it
according to specific guidelines- turning some of the water content into sugar while leaving behind
fructose and sucrose as purer products. This by-product is stored by the worker bee on the
honeycomb cell. These honeycomb cells are the main storage facility within a bee's hive and
contain all sorts of nectar and pollen that have been gathered by the worker bees, this is what we
call honey. The honeybee goes about its regular routine of diligently flying from flower patch to
flower patch and back to its colony, often making hundreds of trips in a single day. This species has
proven to be incredibly hard-working, demonstrating remarkable levels of perseverance and
dedication to its role in nature.
