Air Pollution
Air Pollution
Among the main air pollutants, we can mention smoke, inhalable particles, sulfur
dioxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. These substances can cause
serious damage to human health. Carbon monoxide, for example, decreases the
blood's ability to transport oxygen throughout the body, potentially causing tissue
hypoxia. Ozone, on the other hand, has an oxidizing and cytotoxic role, which can
cause irritation in the eyes and a decrease in lung capacity, for example. Sulfur dioxide
caused by burning of sulphur containing compound of fossil fuels, is linked to upper
airway irritation, as is nitrogen dioxide. The latter can also cause serious damage to the
lungs.
"Air pollution is also the cause of acid rain, which pollutes soil, water and damages
vegetation and animals, in addition to intensifying phenomena such as thermal
inversion."
