Job Title: ASEAN-Japan Centre Programme Associate for Global Job Preparation

1. Job Description:
We are looking for a dynamic and driven individual to join our team as a programme associate. This
opportunity is a steppingstone for those seeking to establish a career at global level. This three-year
professional job experience is ideal for fresh graduates, current students, or young professionals
aiming to pursue a career within the United Nations, multinational corporations, or further their
education at a reputable graduate school.

2. Responsibilities:
1. Participate in various projects and initiatives of the ASEAN-Japan Centre (or AJC) based on the
endorsed mid-term strategic plan 2022-2025 (or AJC 5.0) and annual work plans.
2. Gain professional experience in economic cooperation, impact investing, inclusive and resilient
trade utilizing FTAs, and sustainable tourism between Japan and ASEAN countries.
3. Work closely with supervisors and mentors to gain understanding and hands-on experience on
the AJC’s business processes, protocols, and operations.
4. Assist in the development and implementation of strategies, programmes and projects that
align with the AJC’s goals and objectives.
5. Compile and analyse data, prepare reports, and make recommendations for improved actions.
6. Attend seminars, and workshops related to international relations, diplomacy, economic
development, sustainability, and other relevant areas.
7. Engage in continuous learning and professional development activities.

3. Organization setting and reporting:


This position is located in the Department of Programme Operations or the Office of the Secretary
General (OSG) of the ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC), an international organization comprising of 11
member states (Japan and 10 ASEAN Member States). The Department undertakes planning,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the programme activities of the AJC under the direct
supervision of the Secretary-General and has two Directors of Programme Operations. Meanwhile the
OSG advises, promotes, facilitates and monitors the AJC’s substantive activities and also responsible
for public communication and external relations.

The position works under the direct supervision by a programme manager at one of four programme
teams or the lead public communication officer for promoting sustainable impact investment from
Japan to ASEAN, inclusive and resilient trade utilizing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Japan
and ASEAN countries, sustainable tourism and external relations.

While the assignment will be determined based on the candidate's abilities and skills, and the
organization's priorities, the candidate's preferences will also be highly respected in the decision-
making process.

Job functions and duties of these four teams and the OSG as well as the structure of the Centre are
detailed in the attachment to this description.

4. Qualifications:
1. Current undergraduate or postgraduate student, or recent graduate from an accredited
university, preferably with a degree in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, or
related field. Any professional working experience is an asset.
2. Strong interest in pursuing a career within the United Nations, other international
organizations, or multinational corporations.
3. During interviews, applicants must demonstrate their core values of integrity, professionalism,
and empathy as competencies of collaborating with others and drives for changes.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Proof of proficiency is required,
for instance, professional experiences in English speaking environments or organizations,
references from current or previous supervisors who can provide insights into the candidate`s
English proficiency or providing valid test scores from recognized English proficiency
examinations such as TOEFL or IELTS.
5. Proficiency in the Japanese language is an advantage.
6. Demonstrated interest and commitment to both ASEAN-Japan relations and international
development issues.
7. Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
8. The post is open to nationals of AJC’s member states only, namely the 10 ASEAN countries and
Japan, and applicants must be eligible to work in Japan.

5. Duty station:
Tokyo, Japan, with possible business trips to ASEAN countries.

6. Contractual period:
Fixed term of three (3) years with three (3) months probational period. No extension of the contractual
period in this programme is considered.

7. Working days, hours, and annual leave:


8 hours a day including one hour break (basically, 9:30AM to 5:30PM).
Monday-Friday (excl. Japanese public holidays). Annual leave as stipulated in the Staff Rules, plus
summer, and end and beginning of the year holidays.

8. Salary and other benefits:


Around 3.5 million yen (taxable) per annum for fresh graduates. Overtime allowance, commutation
allowance, social security and health insurance, and payment of termination gratuity will be provided.

Undergraduate students can work as paid interns (based on the Centre's regulations) until they obtain
their bachelor's degree, at which point they will be formally employed as Programme Associate.

In accordance with the Centre's regulations, there would be an annual within grade increment and a
provision for severance pay.

A maximum of 300,000 yen per year will be provided to support the self-study of the Programme
Associate for his/her self-development (on an application basis*).
*Please note that there will be specific conditions regarding the content of the self-study.

9. Selection Process:
A candidate will be selected through screening of application documents and interview (face-to-face
or online).
