The book
Brazilian Lyric Studies for Trombone brings together 31 songs by Brazilian com-
posers in the form of melodic studies. They are songs by important Brazilian
composers such as Alberto Nepomuceno, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Lorenzo Fernan-
dez and many others. We have works with distinct characteristics ranging from the
end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, all of which were
idiomatically adapted for the trombone, adapting the tessiture, suppressing long
pauses, etc. We also seek to have the widest possible variety of keys. The exer-
cises were organized in a progressive way of difficulty.

The Studies
We suggest that the indicated tempos and the names of the songs be the inspiration
for the interpretation of each study. The indication of the pulse is not precise, some-
times we suggest times that are different from the original ones, thinking about giving
freedom in the performance. Some of the songs are quite well known and you'll easi-
ly find recordings with excellent singers, but we've also deliberately chosen unknown
pieces. SEEK TO SING through the trombone. Always remember that air must
“draw” the melody. Always think of yourself as playing to an audience. The princi-
ples applied here are from “Wind and Song” by Arnold Jacob.
