Activity 1 Case Study

SAMSUNG

1. What is/are the triggering event/s that act/s as stimulus/stimuli for strategic change in the given
case? .

I had noticed the two classes of the triggering events in this example, the internal and external
environment, which serve as stimuli for the strategic change in Samsung. Internally, Chairman Lee Kun-
Hee, the newly appointed chief operating officer, has led the company through a 360-degree
transformation, imprinting in the minds of all employees the significant shift that their boss is about to
enact for the business.

2. Which characteristic/s of strategic decisions is/are described in the case study?

Consequential is a characteristic of the type of strategic decision discussed in the case study. By
transforming the culture of Samsung Electronics into one that places a high value on seniority, he
introduced merit-based pay and promotion, with the consequent implications relating to strategic
decisions committing significant resources and requiring a great deal of commitment from people at all
levels.

3. How will Samsung maintain its successful market position by using one of the modes in strategic
decision-making?

Samsung will use the planning mode, which relates to the systematic gathering of relevant approach
information of scenario analysis, to retain its successful market position. Also, they should look for new
chances to expand so that they can become renowned and develop. Yet, Sony and Motorola, the clear
global leaders at the time, eclipsed Samsung’s reputation. Samsung took the strategic choice to offer
premium consumer goods such as flat-screen TVs, appliances, semiconductors, and mobile devices like
its well-known galaxy line of smartphones rather than concentrating on creating and selling products for
its own diverse businesses.
