Concept Note
Winter School and Workshop on Advanced Qualitative
Tools and Techniques in Humanities and Social Sciences
The contemporary research does not fail to bemoan the traditional qualitative research
methods in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) often challenged on the grounds of bias
and subjectivity. However, recent times saw a growing body of qualitative research
employing more empirically sound methods for its validation, including some
interdisciplinary techniques. It creates a need to sensitize and enrich the PhD research
scholars to the latest trends in this area, juxtaposed with the hands-on sessions. In alignment
with the ethos of the National Education Policy (2020), the proposed workshop could go
a long way in enhancing the research output from the HSS scholars.
In this light, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), IIT Jammu is
organising a week-long winter school and workshop to engage the PhD research students
from diverse HSS backgrounds in enriching sessions by resource persons from
interdisciplinary backgrounds. The workshop would broadly revolve around the
fundamentals of qualitative research, academic writing and planning of the research,
Literature review and its novel approaches, including meta-analysis, systematic literature
review, and so on, research ethics, and finding appropriate journals. It would also include
dedicated hands-on sessions for content analysis, scientometric analysis, referencing, and
plagiarism check using appropriate software.

Experts’ Profile and
Session Abstracts
Abstract:
As a practising scientist for the past four decades, I have come to long believe that if ever
there was a great job on this planet, it is that of a researcher. For it gives you a licence to
pursue what you enjoy most, unfettered by the outcome. But my career has also taught
me that as I enjoy these privileges, I need to follow some basic rules of the game, just as
you would, if you were to enjoy driving your car or playing a game of chess.
In this session, we shall ask ourselves three or four questions about research that hopefully
you will find interesting as well as useful in navigating further into the workshop. First: what
is the question that you are chasing to answer or address ? Why is it important or interesting
to you ? Second: how do you propose to address the question that you think is interesting?
Just as multiple paths can lead to your home from your office, how do you rationalize on
the path that you would take to reach to an answer. Third: Having addressed the question,
do you feel a sense of fulfilment, or is there a lurking fear that there may me more to the
question than what you have answered or set out to answer ? Fourth: Research is a journey
and not a destination. So when do we hang our boots and say, well it is time to move on,
sufficiently aware that we might not have reached our goals ?

Abstract:
National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is being rolled out across states and not all
states have yet completely rolled it out. It is difficult at this stage to assess its impact on the
learning outcomes of students. However one thing is certain. Students need multi-
disciplinary skills to be able to effectively use their knowledge for making a difference to
their personality and for improving the environment that they live in.
It is also very necessary for the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. No product today is mechanical
or electrical/electronics. It is a combination of both usually with other disciplines like
materials. Also Software is almost always a necessary part of most products.
Interdisciplinary research is on the rise globally. Yet, several studies have shown that it often
achieves lower impact compared to more specialized work, and is less likely to attract
funding. Here, we seek to reconcile such evidence by analyzing 44,419 research grants
awarded by the research councils in the UK. We find that researchers with an
interdisciplinary funding track record dominate the network of academic collaborations,
both in terms of centrality and knowledge brokerage, but such a competitive advantage
does not translate into immediate return. Our results based on a matched pair analysis
show that interdisciplinary researchers achieve lower impact with their publications in the
short run; however, they eventually outperform their specialized counterparts in funding
performance, both in terms of volume and value. These findings suggest that pursuing an
interdisciplinary career may require perseverance to overcome extra challenges, but can
pave the way for a more successful endeavor.

Title of The session: Research Ethics in Social Science Research : The Normative
Underpinnings of Social-Scientific Research
Abstract:
I shall talk about the presuppositions of research ethics in social sciences by alluding to the
normative underpinnings of social science, in as much as I am wedded to the belief that
“value-free” social science is a myth. Setting the argument for a normative social science
(NSS) against the so-called positive social science (PSS), I shall explain how the Fact/Value
dichotomy is inapplicable to the study and examination of social phenomena. Furthermore,
I shall try to show, by adverting to a theoretical observable on the part of Amartya Sen, how
there exists a normative element hidden in PSS. This critique of PSS, mounted through Sen’s
argumentative analysis of the false objectivity of individual choice or preference attributed
to the so-called “rational economic actor/agent,” is articulated through the illustration of
the phenomenon of impoverishment and deprivation vis-à-vis the individual actor/agent’s
desire-fulfilment psychology.
I shall highlight the research ethics of social science studies in terms of how such researches
are ideologically motivated by the desire to shape and strengthen the democratic fabric of
our society. Social research into community development, which is a primary
developmental condition in a democratic world, must comply with the imperative of
launching programmes that enjoy peoples’ overwhelming acceptance and their whole-
hearted participation. It is this acceptance and participation in a community context that
explains why ethnography as a research methodology is so central to the qualitative
approach in social research. I shall end the discussion by elaborating the
ethnomethodological imperative in terms of its “holistic” and “naturalistic” character.

Abstract:
Scenarios are hypothetical but plausible propositions, images or stories about how the
future might unfold. Scenarios are systematically constructed to aid decision-making in the
future. The use of scenarios as a research methodology was probably first introduced by
Berger in 1964.
Today, scenarios has developed into a sophisticated research approach characterized by a
wide range of quantitative (modeling and computer simulations) and qualitative
(interviews, brainstorming workshops, group discussions, surveys, Delphi-style ranking, role
playing, storytelling, intuitive logic and visioning) approaches. This session focuses on the
use of scenarios for qualitative research. Participants will be provided with readings in-
advance.
They are expected to read these before attending the proposed session. During the session,
participants shall participate in an in-class exercise where they will apply learnings from their
readings to understand how to apply scenarios for qualitative research.

Activity Sessions
Several Activity and Networking Sessions are planned throughout the Winter School 2022
to engage the Scholars. The basic structure of the academic sessions involves extended levels
of interactivity.
The special sessions by the Faculty Members, Experts and Scholars are carefully designed to
engage the participants and exchange ideas.
We, at HSS, IIT Jammu believe that the workshops sessions should not be similar to classroom
lecture(s). Instead it/they should involve the participants with discussions, debates, hands on
activities, group works, individual and group presentations, brainstorming and other activities
which help in sharpening, not only the subject-specific, but also the interpersonal skills and
competences.
Ice-Breaking Session:
Introduction of the participants, through brainstorming in random groups.
Concept-Mapping Session:
Mapping various aspects of research through group work.
