This B&M Short Throw Shifter has been designed to work on most 1996-2000 Audi A4, 2000 Audi S4, 2000 Audi A6,
and 1996-2000 Volkswagen Passat models. It has been engineered to greatly reduce shift throw and improve shifter feel.
Check the parts and tools lists at the beginning of these instructions for the supplied parts and the tools required to install
your B&M Short Throw Shifter. Installation of the B&M Short Throw Shifter can be accomplished by anyone with
minimal mechanical experience.

INTRODUCTION
This B&M Short Throw Shifter can be installed in less than an hour by carefully following the instructions. Read all
instructions first to familiarize yourself with the parts, tools, and procedures. This kit contains all the parts necessary to
install the shifter.

STEP 1. Unscrew knob a . a

STEP 2. Carefully unsnap leather boot b .

STEP 3. Remove rubber cover c . (for some vehicles)

STEP 4. Carefully unsnap and remove console plate d .

Some vehicles require center console removal.

STEP 5. Remove insulation foam e . (for some vehicles)

STEP 6. Remove shifter cover nuts f . BB

STEP 7. Remove shifter cover g .

STEP 8. Remove four (4) nuts h .

STEP 9. Remove change rod bolt i and plate j .

STEP 10. Remove support rod bolt k .

STEP 11. Push shift mechanism down and forward.

STEP 12. Remove four(4) rail screws m .

STEP 14. Pull out the two(2) rails n .

STEP 15. Push out rubber bushings p .

STEP 16. Identify shift pattern then proceed to indicated step. 1 3 5 1 3 5

STEP 17. Remove large internal retaining ring q .

STEP 18. Remove shifter r from base s .

STEP 19. Detach adapter t and remove shifter r from pivot u .

STEP 20. Assemble and lubricate B&M Short Throw Shifter as

STEP 21. Reassemble B&M Short Throw Shifter into pivot u FF
and base s . Then secure with ring q .

STEP 23. Wearing Safety Glasses JJ carefully remove shifter r y

STEP 24. Assemble and lubricate B&M Short Throw Shifter as

indicate. A

STEP 26. Reassemble Spring S and spring cover v . Secure

with retaining ring q or M (use indicated groove only).

STEP 31. Reassemble Spring S and spring cover v . Secure

with retaining ring q or M (use indicated groove only).

STEP 32. Slide on Nylon Bushings(2) G as indicated.

STEP 33. Position Nylon Bushings(2) G equally in desired
location (note: position bushing slots inward).

STEP 34. Push rails(2) n and Nylon Bushings(2) G into base

STEP 36. Connect Adapter C to Stick A with Shoulder Bolt Q

and secure with Thread Lock V and Jam Nut R .

STEP 37. Replace shift mechanism.

STEP 38. Replace four(4) rail screws m .

STEP 39. Apply Thread Lock V and replace support rod bolt k .

STEP 40. Apply Thread Lock V and replace change rod bolt i

STEP 41. Replace four (4) nuts h .

STEP 42. Temporarily install shift knob a to test shifter move-

ment. Test movement of shifter into all gears. Correct
any problems before proceeding.

STEP 43. Replace shifter cover g .

STEP 44. Replace shifter cover nuts f . BB

STEP 45. Replace insulation foam e . (if so equipped)

STEP 46. Carefully snap into place console plate d .

(if so equipped)
Reinstall center console if it was removed.

STEP 47. Replace rubber cover c . (if so equipped)

STEP 48. Turn leather boot b inside-out and trim approx. 1 in.
(25mm) from boot spacer. Some vehicles will use E-
Clip T to properly space boot b .
TOOL: Saw (small) or Cutter NN b

STEP 49. Carefully snap in leather boot b .

STEP 50. Screw on knob H . Note: Original knob can be used.

STEP 51. Install O-Ring (Large) J onto Knob Insert I .

STEP 52. Push Knob Insert I into Knob H .

STEP 53. Again test movement of shifter into all gears. DO NOT
operate vehicle until all gears can be smoothly and fully
engaged. Assure that entry into reverse gear can ONLY
be accomplished by pushing down (if so equipped).
