Apart from some minor notational and orthographical details and the performance direction "Ut supra" at the end of the piece, the first printed
version in Ottavio Petruccis Frottole, Libro settimo 1507 is identical to the version printed in Andrea Antico, Canzoni Novi... 1510 used as starting
point for this edition. The differences in notation are noted in footnotes in the Diplomatorical edition. As all the differences are minor I have not
edited the version of the Petrucci print separately.
The indications for the underlay of stanzas 2-4 in the prints are somewhat enigmatic both in Canzoni Novi and in Petruccis Libro settimo. In my
opinion the indications suggest that the initial section should be repeated after each stanza: Thus the initial four lines of the lyrics have the
function of a refrain. It is followed by the first four lines of next stanza, sung to the same music as the "refrain". The Opening section is thus sung
twice between the stanzas, but with different words every other time. Though not clearly indicated the opening section also should be repeated at
the end giving a formal structure for the music of A(refr!)BA(refr)/A(Vers)BA(refr)/A(Verse)BA(refr)/A(Verse)BA(refr)
