THE RUNAWAY MILLIONAIRES

PART ONE

I’m going to tell you 1 bit about an unusual theft that happened in New Zealand just
2 years ago.
A guy owned a petrol station in a small town. Like 3 business owners, he asked his bank
for an overdraft and they agreed. When he next checked how 4 money he had in his
account, he was shocked to discover that the bank had given him ten million dollars!
Without asking for 5 explanation, the guy transferred 6 of the
money to accounts abroad. 7 days later, he and his girlfriend fled to Asia, where they spent
8 money on five-star hotels and other luxuries. Almost
9 New Zealander followed the case, wondering
whether 10 of the runaways would ever be caught.

THE RUNAWAY MILLIONAIRES

PART TWO

Fast forward a 11 of years, and the woman was arrested when

she entered New Zealand to renew her passport. She insisted that her partner had told her that he’d
won 12 the money and she had absolutely 13 clue about the fund’s
true origin. 14 months later, the guy too was caught crossing a border.
In separate trials, 15 of them were found guilty, despite the court agreeing that
16 of them had planned to steal anything before the bank error. The guy was sentenced
to four years and seven months in prison and the woman had to stay at her home for nine months.
What would you do if you found ten million dollars in your bank account?

COMMENTS
I have very 17 sympathy for them. 18 people would actually
spend millions of dollars that didn’t really belong to them. – Ifan

I’m pretty sure 19 of people would have done the same thing! Who doesn’t dream of having
20 money arrive in their account? – Amber
