As A Philosophy, Stoicism:
An ardent adherent of Stoicism, one of the most influential
intellectual traditions of classical Greece and Rome, Marcus
Aurelius. The Stoics believed that the secret to living a good
life was to cultivate virtue and wisdom, as well as a
detached and tranquil attitude toward life. They believed
that everything else, including wealth, fame, and material
possessions, is fleeting and unreliable and that the only
things in life over which we really have control are our own
thoughts and acts.
The Value of Meditation in Stoicism
The Stoics considered meditation to be a crucial
component of their intellectual discipline. They saw
meditation as a way to develop inner wisdom, retain
serenity, and keep a detached, tranquil perspective on life.
Marcus Aurelius said in "Meditations" that "It is not that we
have a little time to live, but that we waste a great deal of
it." He believed that since it helped him focus and cut out
distractions, meditation was a crucial component of leading
a moral and fulfilling life.
1. Logos
To reside with the gods. And by doing so, you're showing
to them that your soul absorbs what it receives and
satisfies the needs of the spirit, which God provided to
every one of us as a piece of himself to lead and guide us.
This conveys our views and our logos. (5.27)
"And don't think of philosophy as your tutor, but rather as
the sponge and egg white that treats ophthalmia—as a
calming salve or a warm lotion. Being pleased with the
logos rather than displaying your commitment to it. Keep
in mind that philosophy simply asks for what your nature
already needs. (5.9)
• "An unnatural activity is one that contradicts with the
logos of a creature having logos." (7.11) "Everything is in
order whenever anything can be done as the logos shared
by gods and mankind recommends. We have nothing to
fear when there is profit since our employment is useful
and advances in harmony with our nature. (7.53)
• "To be comfortable and active, happy and serious at the
same time, is to follow the logos in all things." (10.12a)
• "You have functioned as a component of something; you
will dissolve into that which made you. or, better yet, be
restored. to the logos, which is the source of all things.
through everlasting metamorphosis. (4.14)
2. Soul
To the country, the beach, or the mountains, people
attempt to get away from it all. You continually wish you
could. Which is stupid since you can always flee. merely
heading within. Your own spirit is the only spot that is
quieter and more interruption-free. What am I doing with
my soul?" (Question 4.3) Ask yourself questions to discover
what resides in your mind' and what sort of soul you
currently own. All you need to do, according to verse 5:11,
is pay attention to and honestly appreciate the strength
that is inside you. (2.13) "Therefore, bear in mind this
refuge: the backroads of your own self. Most vital, no
pressure or tension Things have no influence over the soul
(4.3). They are unable to control, direct, or even have
access to it. It moves and directs itself fully by itself. It uses
the information presented to it and adds its own
interpretation to it. The soul is a sphere in balance, neither
stretching out nor pulling inward (see 5.19). Instead of
breaking apart and drooping inward, it is blazing with light
and searching for the truth inside and beyond. (11.12)
3. Oneness and Connectivity
"Continue to remind yourself of the links between things
and how they are linked. Everything is tied to everything
else and feels sympathy for everything else. This
occurrence is a result of a preceding one. Things are one
and push and pull against one another while also breathing
together. (6.38)
• "The web is sacred, and all its components are
intertwined; everything is tied together. Together, they
make up the globe, and they are perfectly positioned. All
things are part of one planet. All of them have the same
deity. The logos, which all rational creatures share, has
only one substance and rule. And one fact is that. Beings
who share the same birth and logos, if this is actually the
result of one process. "The earth as a living being—one
nature, one soul," states verse 7.9. Remember that. And
how everything flows in rhythm with one cohesive
sensation. and how everything contributes to the
construction of everything else. braided and spun together.
(4.40) "The intellect of the world is not self-centered. It
turned higher things into one another and created lesser
things for the benefit of higher ones. Look at how it links,
how it submits, how it gives each item what it deserves,
and how it aligns with the better things. "Whatever
happens to you is for the welfare of the world," (5.30).
That would be plenty all by itself. But if you pay close
attention, you'll typically also notice something else:
Everything that occurs to one person happens for the
betterment of everyone else. What hurts the hive affects
the bee, according to (6.45) “(Plato has it right) You must
examine the world from above if you intend to speak
about individuals. Herds, troops, farms; marriages,
divorces, births, and funerals; clamorous courtrooms,
barren locations; all the foreign peoples; festivals, days of
melancholy, market days... everything jumbled together, a
symphony of contrasts. (7.48)
4. Constituent Components
"What makes sense in varied species is interrelated and
meant to work as a whole, much like the multiple pieces of
a single creature. Keep in mind that "I am a single limb
(Melos) of a larger body—a rational one," and you'll be
able to appreciate this better. (7.13) "Whatever nature
does as a whole and whatever contributes to its
preservation benefits every component of nature." (2.3)
• "Therefore, accepting what occurs has two benefits. One
is that you are a victim of it. It pertains to you because it
was prescribed for you. The oldest cause of all spun the
thread a very long time ago. The second reason is that an
individual's experiences have an influence on how the
world runs, including how happy it is, how satisfied it is,
and even how it continues to exist. Because if you remove
anything—anything at all—from the continuity and
consistency of the whole, the whole is wrecked. not just its
components, but also its ambitions. And when you
complain, you're truly trashing and hacking. However, you
do have one perk in this situation: you can reattach
yourself. God has not granted the right to be split, taken
apart, and put back together to any other piece of any
other whole. However, observe how he singled us out.
When we are broken off, he permits us to return, graft
ourselves back on, and assume our old place as a
component of the whole. He has enabled us to not be
broken off in the first place. Consequently, according to
verse 8, nature is equal to Truth—the wellspring of all true
things. 34: "And that which is and that which is the case
are closely intertwined." (9.1) • "To perceive the paths of
the stars as if you were rotating with them. should
constantly be mindful of how the components interact
with one another. These types of concepts wipe the filth of
reality away. (7.47)
• "I am a component of a cosmos regulated by nature,
whether it is atoms or the natural world. Second, I have
links to other, equivalent components. And in light of that,
I don't have the right to whine about the duties handed to
me by the whole as a part. Because the whole cannot be
hurt by what is advantageous to the parts, and the whole
does nothing that is not beneficial to it. All natures have
that trait, but there is another quality that marks the
nature of the world: no outside force can compel it to
injure itself. As a consequence, I shall accept whatever
happened by remembering the broader sum of which I am
a part. Because of my links to other parts, I will not act
selfishly but rather endeavor to join them, devoting all of
my efforts toward doing what is beneficial for everyone
while avoiding what is not. My life should be simple if I
follow those instructions. (10.6)
8. Purpose
"From horses to vine buds, everything is here for a reason.
What about it surprises you? The other gods and even the
sun will tell you, "I have a purpose." Why were you born,
too? for enjoyment? Check to see if your answer will stand
up under questioning. (8.19)
Even when working hard, folks who have no objective in
life to concentrate every thought and impulse on are
wasting their time. (2.7) • "When you struggle to get out of
bed in the morning, tell yourself, "I have to go to work—as
a human being. If I do the things, I was placed on this
world to accomplish—the things I was supposed to
achieve—what do I have to complain about? Or is this
what I was designed for all along? To curl up under the
blankets to stay warm?" You don't love yourself enough,
says (5.1) Or you might appreciate your nature and
everything it takes of you. People who are enthusiastic
about what they do are so weary while doing it that they
overlook washing or eating. (5.1) "And your field of work?"
‘Goodness.’ (And how else is it to be achieved, except
thought—about the nature of the world and of people?
(11.5) "Dig deep; there, in the water, is compassion. It will
continue to pop up as long as you keep digging. (7.59)
9. A Spiritual Uplift
Learn to notice how they all turn into one another. Apply it
continuously and train yourself with it. Nothing is more
useful for spiritual growth. (10.11) "To the tried-and-true
maxims above, add this one: describe what we perceive,
sketch its outline, and then look at its essence. Naked and
naked. all together. Unmodified. Moreover, to refer to it by
its real name, which is the item itself and the pieces to
which it will eventually return. Nothing is more useful to
spiritual growth than this capacity to logically and precisely
appraise everything that happens to us. must approach it
in a way that helps us grasp what function it performs in
the world and what needs it meets. As a citizen of that
higher city, to which all other cities are simply residences,
its relevance to that world in general and to man, in
particular, is similarly important. A high degree of
development may result in empathy even for things that
are relatively dissimilar, according to (3.11). (9.9)
10. Integrity And Virtue
"The objective of character is to live each day as if it were
your last, without haste, idleness, or pretense." • "It can
only take your life if it ruins your personality. Otherwise,
neither the inside nor the outside can hurt you. (4.8) "The
components move in both directions, up and down. The
momentum of virtue is distinct and profound. It travels
down a foggy road gradually and regularly. (6.17)
• "To hurt is to harm oneself. When you wrong someone,
you degrade yourself. (9.4) "Or are you determined to
work with evil? Have you not learned from past mistakes
to avoid them at all costs? Given that it is a plague—
mental cancer—worse than anything caused by polluted
air or a poor environment. Such disorders may only
endanger your life; this one threatens your humanity.
Concentrate on what nature demands, as if it were your
only source of authority (9.2). Accept it if doing so would
be detrimental to your nature as a living being. Then pay
attention to and accept what that nature needs unless
doing so would undermine your nature as a reasonable
person. (10.2)

Sometimes Fronto descends from the heights of
eloquence to offer practical advice; as when he
suggests how Marcus should deal with his suite. It is
more difficult, he admits, to keep courtiers in harmony
than to tame lions with a lute; but if it is to be done, it
must be by eradicating jealousy. 'Do not let your
friends,' says Fronto,'[30] 'envy each other, or think that
what you give to another is filched from them.
Keep away envy from your suite, and you will find
your friends kindly and harmonious.'
Here and there we meet with allusions to his daily
life, which we could wish to be more frequent. He goes
to the theatre or the law-courts,[31] or takes part in
court ceremony, but his heart is always with his books.
The vintage season, with its religious rites, was always
spent by Antoninus Pius in the country. The following
letters give sonic notion of a day's occupation at that

because after so long a time I neither embraced you
nor spoke to you, though you visited the palace, and
the moment after I had left the prince my brother. I

one occasion: 'I have seen your daughter. It was like
seeing you and Faustina in infancy, so much that is
charming her face has taken from each of yours.' Or

that nothing is more like than the likeness.... By the
