Learning and Teaching Seminars

From Good to Outstanding:

Guidance for Outstanding Lessons
Thursday 1 November London
Tuesday 27 November Birmingham
Thursday 13 December Manchester

Who might be interested in attending this course: Teachers of any kind, Advanced
Practitioners, Teaching Mentors, Managers of Teaching Teams, Observers of Teaching,
Learning Development Managers, Teacher Trainers and all with an interest in quality

How can your college or department become outstanding? How can your success rates be
improved? The main road to success is through improving the quality of teaching. However it
is not easy to travel that extra mile to become outstanding. The difficulties are not just to do
with a lack of will to improve, or to the wrong sort of students. The real difficulty is finding a
detailed answer to these questions:

What is the nature of an outstanding lesson?

Which teaching methods work best?
Which methods ensure that all students participate and strive to learn?
Which tell the teacher the problems students are facing and enable these to be fixed?
How can relatively dull curriculum content be made exciting, rewarding and engaging?
How can able students be stretched and weaker ones supported at the same time?

Outstanding teachers know that the answer to these questions lies mainly in what the student
does, not just what the teacher does. Research shows that outstanding teachers teach in a
way that can be replicated by almost any reasonably motivated teacher. However, some
aspects of their approach are surprising and not commonly understood. This session will
focus on practical strategies which will enable weak teachers to become good and good
ones to become outstanding. In order to advance, any teacher will need time to experiment
with these methods and will need an opportunity to discuss the process of implementation.

The course will be led by Geoff Petty, author of the UK’s best selling teacher training text
‘Teaching Today’. This session will be informed by summaries of the evidence from pragmatic
classroom-based research on what outstanding teachers do in the classroom and which
teaching methods work best. This evidence is summarised in his new book ‘Evidence Based
Teaching’. Geoff will use many of the methods he advocates himself during this session so
participants get the chance to experience them as well as to study them. This session is
applicable to the teaching of any subject at any level.

In order to make the most of this opportunity, numbers on this seminar are limited to 36 and
will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. Please note that there is a good deal of
overlap between this session and Geoff’s earlier seminar on the top ten teaching methods.
