Summary
PowerFlex 750 Series Drives: Centrifugal Fan/Pump Setup Guide

Question
How is a PowerFlex 753 or PowerFlex 755 drive configured or setup for a fan or centrifugal pump motor
application?

Are there recommended settings for Centrifugal Fan/Pump application?

Why does the motor sometimes first start in the reverse direction on a large inertia load?

Environment
20F PowerFlex 753 drive

Answer
Pumps are not usually heavy duty applications. Experience shows that drives left in the factory default control
mode (sensorless vector control) sometimes do not want to accelerate fans or pumps above 2 to 3Hz.

This can be caused by several things, autotuning not executed or done so incorrectly, wrong motor data etc.

A quick and easy fix is to set the drive in a V/Hz regulation method. This is an ideal control method for centrifugal
type loads.

Find below a table with some best practice settings. Other common parameters like motor nameplate data are
not mentioned but need to be entered as part of the startup.

Common Problem:
In some applications, the motor will be spinning backward when the drive is stopped (i.e. there is a backdraft on
the fan causing the fan to wind mill in the reverse direction). Flying start, may be able to catch the reverse
spinning motor, but cannot produce the torque to reverse the direction to forward and bring the motor up to
speed. To remedy this change the following parameters:

1. Set Parameter 388 [Flux Braking En] = 1 [Enable]

2. Set Parameter 428 [Current Limit Kd] = 0
3. Set Parameter 429 [Current Limit Ki] = 340 (1/2 default).
