Interview

.Name of the chaplain interviewed, and date/time of the interview (1

The Reverend Brooklyn Smith February 14th 9:00 AM

?Where are you currently serving (2

I am currently working as a full-time chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator at hospice and

.palliative care of the Piedmont

?How long have you served as a chaplain within this ministry (3

.I have been a chaplain for four years and at this organization for 6 months

?What preparation did you receive to qualify you (4

I got an M.Div, then did a unit of CPE and a CPE residency for a total of 4 ACPE CPE credits. I

I primarily provide support to patients and their families, then to our staff. I occasionally work

?How effective are your ministry efforts (6

I don’t know how to answer this question. What does it mean to be effective? Perhaps it means,
am I able to meet the needs of our patients and families and staff. I think I am usually effective at
.my role here. Time management and ability to respond in time are usually barriers to care

I think my friends and family use me as a resource for questions about death and dying,

Shadowing

John 16:22 “So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will

1
rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” I chose to shadow the reverend Brooklyn Smith

because she is the full-time chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator at a hospice placement. As I

as a future hospital chaplain will be seeing patient that will spend weeks, or the longest just a few

short months with me which is considered a “quick” stay I wanted to understand and learn what

a chaplain at a hospice placement does at a “end of life” facility. Another reason why I wanted to

shadowed the Brooklyn Smith was because she was recently the chaplain at the hospice in my

home town that I have visited before because loved ones were there and I was just simply

.interested in what it interred

Kenneth Boa stated, “Seek to manage time loosely enough to enhance relationships rather

2
than tightly to accomplish results.” What I learned the most about this shadowing from

Reverend Brooklyn Smith is that time management is very important when it comes to hospice

care and chaplaincy. Colossians 4:5 “Behave wisely toward outsiders, making the best use of

3
your time.” I came to learn that time management in the hospice environment is very important

and needed. When one does not have very successful time management or no time management

at all they experience burnout, stress, and mistakes. When one have successful time management

that person can increase productivity, limit burnout and improve both professional and personal

satisfaction. Leading to better time management leads to a happier work environment all around,

and happier and more pleased people that walk through the doors. According to “Just as we must

engage with others for some of the Disciplines of the Christian life, so there are times when we

4
must temporarily withdraw into the Disciplines of silence and solitude.” It is also important to

remember that time management for your job is very important but to have great time

management for your job you have to take care of yourself as well, so all ways stop and take

time to have time management moments with yourself and with your heart with God so that the

job will a reflection of that time of taking care of yourself. Ephesians 5:15-17 “Be very careful,

then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because

5
”.the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the LORD's will is

Stephen R. Covey the author of the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Powerful Lessons in Personal Change stated “to learn and not to do is really not to learn. To

6
know and not to do is really not to know.” I can apply what I have from this shadowing with the

reverend Brooklyn Smith to my future ministry In many ways. As working at an after school

program there is always something that can be done. According to Donald Whitney, “Before he

7
taught the Word of God to the people of God, he practiced what he learned.” Learning more

from this shadowing about the importance of time management has quickly helped me learn

while I am at work what needs to be done now and what can wait. A great example that happens

more times than not is if my job and my main priority at work is help kids with their homework

and watch them but the trash needs to be taken out, I am going to hold on the trash and help the

.kid with their homework because that is why I am there and the trash is not going anywhere

Romans 15:1- 2 “Now we who are strong have an obligation to bear the weaknesses of

those without strength, and not to please ourselves. Each one of us must please his neighbor for

8
his good, to build him up.” How I can apply this shadowing and very important lesson of time

management to my future ministry as a hospital chaplain is going to the patients, and the ones

who need the most help first. That may sound iffy because your saying to yourself, “their in a

hospital, don’t they all need help first?” The ones in critical need. Then I will go to the ones that

could go a little longer without being seen. Just like I’ve learned, you do the most important first,

so you do not get stressed and uneasy if you do the most easiest patients first then that whole

time you are not going to be in the right head space because you will be stressed out, you will be

unhappy. You will not be putting in 100 percent into those “quote on quote” easy patients and

., .families that you deal with everyday

Shadowing and interviewing the Reverend Brooklyn Smith was both a privilege and a

educational experience. I learned so much both about time management, grief, and palatine care

that I will take in to my studies here at Liberty in my future classes and as a future hospital

chaplain. I also learned that there is a ton of time management skills and knowledge that I need

to work on in so that I do not get tired quickly, I tend to work myself to my breaking point, I

need to practice on the self care, and time management with myself that mentioned as we all do

these days as COVID-19 has made us stress more about where our rent of our house will from,

where the money for the food on our table, and the most thought about question, will our kids go

?back to school? How do you practice time management
